Gunnar looked down at me. For a second his face wasn't the cold Lycan King. It was something rawer. "You will fight. But not like this. Not half-dead on your feet." His thumb brushed my jaw, rough and warm. "Go with Sunna. Clean up and eat something. I'll handle the walls."

I wanted to argue. The bond and the fire both screamed at me to stay glued to his side. But my arm was throbbing worse and my head felt like it was splitting open. I let Sunna pull me up and steer me toward a side door.

Every time the connection between Gunnar and me tried to settle into its old rhythm, the interference from the fragment and the earlier magical assault combined into a sharp, grinding discomfort that ran from the base of my skull down between my shoulders. It wasn't the clean ache of physical injury. It was deeper. More personal. Like the bond itself was bruising every time it carried information. Gunnar stepped closer to the table. "Why come here alone and unarmed? If Blackpine is still loyal to Jakob, this is suicide. If you're not, then you're a traitor to your own people. Which is it?" Bjørn was quiet for a moment. When he answered, the words came slower. "Blackpine followed the elders' promises because our territory is dying. The hunting ranges are thinning. The winters are harder. The old agreements that kept the northern packs fed and armed have been failing for years. Jakob and the elders offered a solution that didn't care about crowns or bonds or who sat on which t

They brought him in under full guard. Six warriors. Two in front, two behind, one on each side. No weapons on him — they had searched him twice at the wall and once more at the inner threshold. His hands were bound in front of him with thick iron cuffs that locked at the wrists and connected to a short chain. Even so, no one treated him like a man who had come in peace. Bjørn Mortensen was larger than he had looked from the battlements during the night fighting. Broad through the shoulders, dark-haired, with a short beard and a pale scar that cut through his left eyebrow and continued down onto his cheek. He moved like a soldier who had spent years learning how to keep his balance when the ground was covered in blood. When his eyes found Gunnar, there was no flinch. When they found me, something colder and more assessing settled into his expression. They took him to the smaller war room off the main hall — the one with no windows and only one door. Gunnar stood on the far side

"It didn't leave with them," he said quietly. Sunna crouched at a safer distance, eyes narrowed. "How did no one notice it during the fighting?" "Because it wasn't fully active yet," Merja said from behind us. She had followed without being invited, drawn by the same wrongness the rest of us could now feel. Her face was pale. "The larger fragments were being fed with pack blood and elder magic. This one was separated. Dormant. Residual. But it's still a piece of the heart stone. And it's waking up because she's standing near it." I forced myself to take a step back. The pressure in the bond eased slightly, but the fragment's green veins continued to pulse in a slow, stubborn rhythm. Gunnar's voice was flat. "Can it be destroyed the way the others were?" Merja shook her head. "Not here. Not without risking a release of whatever residual connection it still has to the larger pieces. If you shatter it carelessly, you might call the others straight to the keep. Or worse — you might f

Dawn came thin and gray, pushing weak light through the high windows of the ruined hall. It did nothing to make the place look less like a slaughterhouse. The dead had been moved. The worst of the blood had been scrubbed or covered. The braced inner doors still groaned under their own damaged weight every time the wind shifted. Outside, Jakob's forces remained in the outer courtyard, visible as dark shapes and low smoke from their cooking fires. They weren't attacking. They were waiting. Occupying. Making sure everyone inside Ironfang understood that the keep no longer controlled its own threshold. Gunnar hadn't slept. Neither had I. The damaged bond made true rest difficult. Every time one of us drifted toward exhaustion, the static edge of the connection tugged the other back to alertness. It was like sharing a bruise that covered the inside of the chest. Matthías found us near the war table as the first real light touched the stones. His injured leg had been properly splinted

Anton smiled. Blood stained his teeth. "You already know there are others. You felt it in the way people looked at her when she first arrived. In the way some of your own warriors hesitated when the scales came out. I was just the one willing to act. The rest are still waiting to see which way the blood runs." Sunna shifted her weight. "He's stalling." "He's telling the truth," I said quietly. "Just not all of it." Anton looked at me again. For the first time something like genuine curiosity crossed his face. "You can feel it, can't you? The way the bond isn't clean anymore. The elders marked it. Next time they hit it, it might not hold. And when it breaks, all that power you've been borrowing from each other turns into a weapon that cuts both ways." Gunnar moved. He didn't strike Anton. He simply closed the distance until he was looming over the chained man, silver eyes reflecting the single lantern light. "The fragments," Gunnar said. "What was left of the Sire after t
