Chapter Four - The Offer

That evening, the estate was quieter than usual. The sun had set hours ago, leaving the sky a deep shade of indigo that pressed against the massive windows of the De Luca estate. The halls, usually alive with laughter, chatter, and the faint clinking of glasses, were now eerily still. Even the faint hum of the city outside seemed to pause in respect—or perhaps in fear—of the house and the man who ruled it.

I followed Marcello down the long corridor, my heels clicking softly against the polished marble floors. Each step felt like a countdown, a slow march toward something I wasn’t prepared to face. My pulse raced, and my palms were slick with sweat. The events of the past twenty-four hours still clung to me like a shadow I couldn’t shake: the photos, the headlines, Bianca’s betrayal, Lorenzo’s absence, and the overwhelming weight of Marcello’s presence.

He led me into his office—a room I had only glimpsed from the hallway on rare occasions before. Mahogany walls, shelves lined with leather-bound books, and the faint scent of cigar smoke mingled with polished wood. A single lamp cast warm light across the massive desk, but the corners of the room were swallowed in shadows, making him appear larger, more imposing, almost carved from the darkness itself.

He gestured toward a chair opposite the desk. “Sit,” he said, his voice low, calm, and commanding.

I obeyed, though my hands were trembling. My mind was already racing, imagining every possible scenario. Punishment? Another lecture? Something worse?

He moved around the desk slowly, deliberately, as though every movement was measured to intimidate and unsettle. Then he stopped and placed something in front of me. A document. Thick, official-looking, with his seal at the top. My stomach tightened instantly.

“What is this?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady, though it trembled slightly.

“A solution,” he replied simply. His dark eyes held mine, unyielding, unreadable.

I picked up the document with shaking fingers. My eyes scanned the words, but I didn’t fully understand what I was seeing.

Marriage contract.

A binding, legal, one-year contract.

I felt the world tilt. My heart skipped violently. My hands shook.

“You’re insane,” I breathed, staring at him. “This… this isn’t real.”

“It is very real,” he said calmly. Not a trace of amusement, no hesitation, no doubt. Only the absolute certainty of a man who had everything he wanted and took what he needed.

I looked at him, eyes wide, searching for a flicker of jest, any hint that this was some kind of elaborate test. But his expression remained calm. Cold. Absolute.

“You are vulnerable,” he continued. “My enemies are watching. Your so-called allies have betrayed you. And your reputation… it is on the verge of collapse. A marriage corrects everything.”

I wanted to argue. To tell him I didn’t need him to fix anything. That I could survive this on my own. But the truth pressed down on me like a weight I couldn’t lift. I had nothing. I was isolated. Ruined. And he—he was the only force in the world capable of containing the damage.

“You don’t even like me,” I said finally, my voice low, but sharp with disbelief.

His gaze darkened, a shadow passing across his face. “That is where you are mistaken,” he said, voice dropping. The words were smooth, deliberate, and wrapped around me like a vice.

I swallowed hard. “Why me?” I whispered, almost afraid to hear the answer.

He stepped closer, and I felt his warmth brush against my arm. The proximity was suffocating. Dangerous. Magnetic. My pulse leapt into my throat.

“Because I do not allow what is mine to be humiliated,” he said, voice low, commanding, possessive.

The word echoed in my mind. Mine.

“You think I belong to you?” I asked, my voice trembling, a mix of fear and disbelief.

“I intend for you to,” he replied simply. Not a threat. Not a question. A fact. Absolute and immovable.

I pulled the document toward me, clutching it like a shield. “I… I can’t,” I stammered. “I won’t sign this.”

His expression softened—not much, just enough to make me doubt my own resistance. “You are not signing for me. You are signing for yourself. For survival. For your dignity. For control over a world that has turned against you in hours.”

I felt the weight of his words press down on me. The events of the past day—the social media attacks, the whispers, the betrayal—had left me hollow. And yet, here he was, offering a lifeline disguised as ownership, control disguised as protection.

“I… I don’t even know if I can trust myself,” I whispered, voice barely audible.

Marcello leaned in slightly, so close I could feel the heat radiating from him. “You can trust me. I do not allow what I claim to be destroyed.” His dark eyes bored into mine. “You will survive. And when this is over, you will be untouchable. But first… this contract ensures it.”

I swallowed hard. My fingers gripped the edge of the desk. My mind raced. One year. Publicly binding. A lifetime of whispers and scandal—or one year under his protection.

I didn’t want to sign. I hated that I was even considering it. But the truth was undeniable. Outside these walls, I had been destroyed. Inside… I would be untouchable. Protected. Safe.

Marcello watched me, unblinking, unwavering. His calmness, his authority, made the decision terrifyingly clear.

“Do you understand?” he asked softly.

I nodded, unable to speak. My throat was dry.

“Good,” he said. He straightened, the shadows in the room lengthening across the floor. “Sign it. And from the moment your signature touches this paper, everything changes. Nothing outside these walls can touch you. And I… will ensure no one dares try.”

My hands shook violently as I took the pen he handed me. Each stroke felt monumental. Every letter a surrender. A declaration. A claim. A promise.

When I finished, he collected the paper, studying it briefly before sliding it into his desk drawer. Then he leaned back in his chair, arms folded, expression unreadable.

“You are now mine,” he said, calm, measured. The words were not a whisper, nor a roar. They simply existed, undeniable and absolute.

I wanted to argue. To reject. To run. But a part of me knew the truth: without this, I had no future. No protection. No safety.

And as terrifying as it was to admit… I wanted to survive.

Marcello stood, towering over me, silent, commanding. The room seemed smaller now, charged with tension. His dark eyes followed every movement, every hesitation.

“You will live under my name, Alessia,” he said quietly. “And under my protection, you will be untouchable. But make no mistake… this does not make you free. You are bound by the contract, by me, and by what has already begun.”

I swallowed hard. My heart pounded. Fear, relief, confusion, and something else—something I couldn’t name—twisted inside me.

“Do you understand?” he asked again.

I nodded. My voice failed me.

He gave a small, almost imperceptible nod, as though the act of signing had already bound me in ways I didn’t yet fully comprehend.

“You have survived today,” he said finally. Calm. Absolute. Possessive. “Tomorrow… we begin the next chapter.”

And with that, he turned, leaving me in the dim glow of the office, the weight of the document, his words, and the future pressing down on me like a shroud I couldn’t escape.

I was safe.

But I was no longer free.

And I knew, deep down, that my life had changed forever.

Chapter 48 – The One Who Broke the Circle The drive back to the estate was quieter than any silence Alessia had ever known. Not empty. Not calm. But sharp. Every second felt like it carried something unspoken, something waiting just beneath the surface. No one spoke. No one needed to. Because the truth had already settled in. They had walked into a trap. Not just any trap. One that had been built from the inside. Alessia sat beside Marcello, her eyes fixed ahead, but her thoughts were moving faster than anything around her. A traitor. The word repeated itself over and over. Someone close. Someone who knew. Someone who had given Lorenzo exactly what he needed. She felt it in her chest. Tight. Cold. Personal. Beside her, Marcello hadn’t said a word since they left the wreckage behind. But his silence wasn’t passive. It was calculating. Deadly. Controlled. His hand rested against his side, and Alessia noticed the slight tension there again. He had been hit. Not

The night air was colder than usual. Not the kind of cold that touched the skin. The kind that settled deeper. Quiet. Unsettling. The kind that warned something was about to happen. Alessia stood beside the car, her arms folded lightly across her chest as she watched the men move around them. Everything was in motion. Quiet orders. Controlled movements. Weapons checked and rechecked. Preparation. But beneath it all, there was tension. Thick. Heavy. Unavoidable. Marcello stood a few steps ahead, speaking in low tones to one of his men. His posture was rigid, controlled, but Alessia could see it now. The slight shift in his shoulders. The way his jaw tightened just a little too often. He felt it too. This wasn’t just another move. This was something else. She stepped closer. “You don’t trust it,” she said. He didn’t turn immediately. “No,” he replied. “Then why go?” Now he looked at her. “Because if we don’t, he controls the next move.” That

Morning came too quickly. Not because Alessia had slept well. But because she hadn’t slept at all. Every time she closed her eyes, the same images returned. The gun. The sound. The sharp, violent crack that still echoed somewhere in her chest. The feeling of her hands pushing Marcello out of the way without thinking. The realization, only seconds later, of what she had done. Of how easily it could have gone wrong. Her body had chosen before her mind could catch up. And now… there was no undoing that instinct. She stood in the training room long before anyone else arrived, the cool marble floor grounding her bare feet. The room was quiet, but not peaceful. It held a different kind of silence. One that felt intentional. One that felt like preparation. Like something was about to change. She exhaled slowly, rolling her shoulders, trying to release the tension that had settled deep into her muscles. But it didn’t leave. Because this wasn’t just physical. This was so
