Through the darkness and pain, Laura saw something move behind the rogues, a shape hidden in the night. At first, she thought death had come for her.

Her heart stopped. Was this it? The end of everything?

Then a deep, scary growl cut through the air, louder and stronger than any sound the rogues could make. The growl shook the forest, making everything tremble. The leaves rustled, and the very ground seemed to shake beneath them.

The rogues stopped, their heads turning quickly toward the sound.

"What was that?" one whispered, fear making his voice shake.

Laura felt Vex's fingers loosen around her throat. Just a bit, but enough to draw in a painful breath. His eyes darted around the darkness, no longer focused on her.

"Who's there?" he shouted, his voice not as strong as before. "This is our land! You hear me? Our territory!"

Another growl answered him, closer now. The sound made Laura's skin tingle. The rogues holding her arms glanced at each other, their grips becoming weak as they looked around nervously.

"I don't like this," the one with the missing ear muttered. "Something's out there."

"Shut up," Vex snapped, but Laura could smell his fear.

Then the shadow moved, jumping from the trees with perfect timing.

Fear and a rush of energy sharpened Laura's senses. The pain was still there, crushing her from inside, but something else was growing stronger.

*I won't die like this*, she thought. *Not afraid. Not giving up.*

Though her body shook with tiredness, she pulled free from the distracted rogues and showed her fangs. The cool night air touched her throat where Vex's hand had been.

"I am not prey," she growled, her voice rough and broken. Her wolf rose inside her, giving her strength she didn't know she still had. It burned through her veins like fire.

The first rogue, with the missing ear, jumped at her with claws out. "You'll pay for that!"

Laura's fighter instincts, buried for so long under her Luna role, came alive. She moved aside, slow but just enough to dodge his claws. As he stumbled past, she cut her own claws down his arm, making him yell in pain.

"The bitch cut me!" he cried, holding his bleeding arm. His eyes widened in shock as he stared at the blood running between his fingers.

"Then rip her apart," Vex ordered, watching both Laura and the unknown threat in the shadows. His eyes kept moving from her back to the darkness.

Another rogue, the one with ugly scars crossing his face, moved behind her. "With pleasure," he said, voice thick with hunger. "Been waiting for a taste."

Laura tried to turn, to keep both attackers in sight, but her moves were slow from her broken bond pain. Every movement felt like moving through water. The scarred rogue kicked her legs out, making her fall hard to the ground. She gasped as pain shot through her ribs, knocking all air from her lungs.

For a moment, her vision swarm as she fought to keep her consciousness.

"Is this the best a Luna can do?" the scarred rogue mocked, walking around her like she was already dead meat. He nudged her side with his foot. "No wonder your Alpha threw you away. Useless."

His words lit a fire in her chest. Laura rolled away from his foot and pushed herself up to her hands and knees. Blood dripped from her lip onto the forest floor.

"He didn't throw me away," she panted, each word burning her throat. "I left him. There's a fucking difference you idiot."

The scarred rogue laughed, showing yellow teeth. "Got spirit, I'll give you that."

"Doesn't matter now," Vex said, coming closer as his courage returned. His shadow fell over her. "You're still going to die alone in these woods. No pack. No mate. Nobody to hear you scream."

Laura pushed herself to her feet, swaying badly. Her body felt like stone, every move taking huge effort. Still, she lifted her claws, swinging wildly at the rogues who circled her like wolves around wounded prey.

"Stay back," she warned, but her voice shook.

She was outnumbered and tired, her strength fading fast. The bond pain ate at her from inside, making each breath harder than the last.

The rogue with black hair rushed in, faking left before hitting her hard in the gut. "This is how it ends for you, Luna."

The blow took her last breath, bending her over in pain. Her knees hit the ground as her legs finally gave out. Dirt and small rocks dug into her skin.

"Pathetic," the black-haired rogue spat. "And to think you were once a Luna. What kind of Alpha would want such a weak mate?"

Each word stung worse than her wounds. Laura tried to stand again, but her body failed her. She stayed on her knees, one arm around her middle, the other against the ground to keep from falling flat. Blood ran from a cut on her head where she'd hit a rock when she fell, warm and sticky as it dripped into her eye. Her vision blurred, the world spinning around her.

The trees. The sky. The sneering faces. Everything mixed together.

Vex walked up, victory on his scarred face. He grabbed her hair, pulling her head back hard to show her throat. The pain made tears spring to her eyes, but she wouldn't cry out. His red eyes gleamed with joy as he looked down at her.

"What a shame," he said, running a claw down her throat. A thin line of blood appeared, but Laura didn't flinch. "You could have been useful. Too bad I like my prey broken."

Laura stared back at him, even as tears of pain filled her eyes. If these were her last moments, she would face them with what pride she had left.

"Do it then you fucker," she whispered. "Finish what he fucking started."

Something flashed in Vex's eyes, maybe confusion, or a moment of respect. Then his face hardened again. "As you wish, Luna." He said as he raised his clawed hand to strike—

Then everything stopped.

Laura's fingers trembled as she turned the pages of the book. The leather felt warm under her touch, almost alive. Her heart pounded as she found what she was looking for - a section titled "The Duskbane Curse."The Duskbane bloodline carries a terrible burden, passed from Alpha to Alpha through generations. During the Shadow Wars, the first Alpha of Shadowfang made a pact with ancient powers to protect his pack. The price: moments of savage madness that grant explosive power but rob the Alpha of reason and humanity.Laura gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. She remembered Zephyr's tightly controlled demeanor, his careful movements. It all made sense now.As the Alpha ages, these episodes become more frequent, more violent. Many Duskbanes have killed their own pack members during these rages. Some have taken their own lives rather than risk harming those they protect."Finding it interesting?" Nikolai's smooth voice came from behind her.Laura jumped, slamming the book shut. "You kn

On the fifth day, they crested a hill, and Laura gasped at the sight below. While she had expected another territory like the others—perhaps a village or fortress—what sprawled before her was nothing short of magnificent.A massive mansion of white stone stood in a clearing, surrounded by perfectly manicured gardens. Fountains sparkled in the sunlight, and Laura could make out figures moving along the pathways—servants, guards, and what appeared to be visitors from different packs."Welcome to my home," Nikolai said with unmistakable pride."This isn't a pack territory," Laura said, stunned."No," he agreed. "It's something better."As they rode closer, Laura took in the details. Unlike Dante's wild, natural territory or Lucian's imposing fortress, Nikolai's estate spoke of wealth and influence. It reminded her somewhat of Zephyr's scholarly domain, but where Zephyr's pack lands emphasized knowledge and history, this place screamed power and luxury."How do you maintain this without a

Laura's back ached as they rode through the dense forest. Two days had passed since they'd left Dante's territory, and she still barely spoke to Nikolai unless necessary. Her fingers traced the smooth surface of the moonstone pendant Zephyr had given her, its cool touch somehow calming the storm inside her. Every time she touched it, she thought of his intense eyes and quiet strength. Then her mind would drift to Dante's wild passion, his protective embrace. Even Lucian's fierce dominance still lingered in her memories."That stone must be quite special," Nikolai's voice cut through her thoughts. "You haven't stopped touching it since we left."Laura dropped her hand immediately. "It's nothing.""Nothing?" Nikolai raised an eyebrow, the sun catching his dark hair as he turned to look at her. "A gift from Zephyr isn't nothing. He doesn't give gifts lightly."She narrowed her eyes. "I still don't understand for the life of me how you do know it was from him?"Nikolai laughed, the sound

That evening, the three of them sat at Dante's table for what might have been the most uncomfortable dinner Laura had ever experienced. Servants brought out roasted meat and fresh bread, but Laura could barely eat."Your territory is truly... rustic," Nikolai commented, taking a sip of wine. "I can see the appeal for someone of Laura's spirited nature.""And what would you know of Laura's nature?" Dante asked, his knife cutting into his meat with unnecessary force.Nikolai smiled. "I'm a good observer. For instance, I've noticed how she touches that moonstone pendant whenever she's thinking of Zephyr."Laura's hand froze where it had indeed been fingering the necklace Zephyr had given her. "And I've noticed how her eyes follow you when you pace," Nikolai continued, turning to her. "How your breath catches when Dante gets too close. The way you favor your left leg slightly today—suggesting quite a vigorous night."Laura flushed. "You're out of line.""Am I?" Nikolai's voice was soft.

Laura woke to sunlight streaming through the window of Dante's cave like bedroom. His arm was heavy across her waist, his body warm against her back. She smiled, feeling his hardened dick pressing against her."Morning," he murmured, his voice rough with sleep as he nuzzled her neck."Morning," Laura replied, pressing back against him. His hand slid up to cup her breast, thumb circling her nipple until it hardened."I could get used to this," Dante growled, his other hand slipping between her thighs. Laura gasped as his fingers found her already wet pussy."So wet for me already," he said, sliding two fingers inside her. "Such a needy girl."Laura moaned, spreading her legs wider. "Only for you."Dante's teeth grazed her shoulder as his fingers worked deeper. "Tell me what you want.""You," she breathed. "I want you inside me."He chuckled darkly. "So impatient." His fingers curled inside her, hitting that spot that made her see stars.Laura reached behind, wrapping her hand around hi

The meeting continued as they discussed patrol schedules and defense strategies. Laura found herself suggesting tactics, drawing from her warrior training. To her surprise, Dante listened intently, implementing many of her ideas. As the hours passed, pack members gradually filtered out until only Laura and Dante remained. Tension filled the room—not just from the danger they faced, but from the electricity that always sparked between them."You don't have to stay," Dante said, leaning over the map table. "This isn't your fight."Laura moved to stand beside him, her shoulder brushing his. "Isn't it?"Dante turned to face her, his golden eyes searching hers. "You've made it clear you don't belong to any pack. That you're your own wolf.""That doesn't mean I don't care," Laura admitted. "About..." She hesitated. "About the pack.""Just the pack?" Dante asked, stepping closer.Laura's heart hammered in her chest. "You know it's not just the pack."His hand came up to cup her face, his thu

Laura's head rested against Dante's chest, his heartbeat strong under her ear. The night air felt cool on their heated skin as they stood in the small clearing, neither wanting to break the spell of the moment."We should head back," Dante said finally, though he made no move to release her.Laura nodded against his chest. "The pack will wonder where their Alpha disappeared to."A hint of a smile touched Dante's lips. "Let them wonder."The sound of running footsteps broke the peaceful moment. Dante tensed, instantly alert as he positioned himself in front of Laura. Kade burst into the clearing, his eyes wide with panic."Alpha!" he gasped. "You have to come quick. It's Renn!""What happened?" Dante demanded, already pulling on his clothes."He was on sentry duty at the north border. He was attacked." Kade's voice shook. "It's bad, Alpha. Really bad."Laura felt cold dread pool in her stomach as she quickly dressed. Dante was already moving, his face a mask of controlled fury."Take m

Long tables groaned under the weight of food—roasted meats, fresh bread, honey cakes, and fruits. Laura sat at Dante's right hand, a position that didn't go unnoticed by anyone."You impressed them again today," Dante said quietly, filling her cup with sweet mead.Laura took a sip, the warm liquid spreading through her chest. "I didn't come here to impress anyone.""I know," he said, his eyes dancing with firelight. "That's precisely why you did."Their conversation was interrupted as Elder Mira approached, settling on the bench across from them."Your aim is exceptional," she said to Laura. "Were you a warrior in your former pack?"Laura hesitated. "I was, before becoming Luna."Mira's eyebrow raised. "And your Alpha allowed this?""No," Laura admitted. "He wanted me to set aside my bow. To be... softer."Something knowing passed across Mira's weathered face. "And here you are, with a red feather and our Alpha watching you like you hung the moon."Heat rushed to Laura's cheeks. Befor

The drums started at dawn, their deep beats calling every member of the Crimson Fang pack to gather. Laura stood at the entrance of Dante's cave, watching as wolves hurried through the camp with excitement lighting their faces."It's starting," Dante said, appearing behind her. He placed a gentle hand on her lower back. "The Hunt Festival."Laura turned to him. "What exactly is the Hunt Festival?""It's our biggest celebration of the year," he explained, his golden eyes bright with rare joy. "We honor the season's successful hunts and thank the moon goddess for her gifts."Laura nodded, trying to ignore the flutter in her stomach when his hand remained warm against her back. Three days had passed since their night in the stone circle, and something had shifted between them—something neither had put into words yet."Everyone seems excited," she observed.Dante's smile was genuine. "It's a day when pack rank is set aside. We compete, feast, and celebrate as equals.""And where do I fit
