Laura turned to find him smirking down at her, his golden eyes dancing with mischief. Her traitorous heart skipped at his closeness, mind flashing to her dream—his hands on her hips, lips on her neck.

"I can choose my own weapons," she managed to say, stepping back to put space between them.

Dante's smirk widened. "Sure you can, sweetheart. But I know what works best with your fighting style." He selected a different sword, slightly heavier, and offered it to her. "This one suits your strength."

Their fingers brushed as she took it from him, and she refused to acknowledge the warmth that shot up her arm at the contact.

"Thanks," she muttered, testing the weight. He was right, of course. The balance felt perfect.

"I'll be overseeing combat training today," Dante announced, not just to her but to the gathering warriors. "We move out tomorrow, and I want everyone battle-ready."

A chorus of acknowledgments rang out as fighters paired off. Laura turned toward Kera, intending to spar with h

Laura woke to the sound of camp breaking around her. Her shoulder felt better, much better. She unwrapped the bandage on her palm and gasped. The wound had almost completely healed overnight. "What the hell?" she whispered, flexing her fingers. No pain. She touched her shoulder where the shadow wolf had clawed her. Still tender, but the burning sensation was gone. Even the old scratches on her arms looked faded. "About time you woke up," Dante's voice came from outside the tent. "We march in an hour." Laura quickly dressed and stepped outside. The morning air was crisp, and warriors were already loading supplies onto horses. The four Alphas stood together near the center of camp, deep in discussion. "How do you feel?" Lucian asked as she approached. "Better. Much better." Laura held up her healed hand. "Look." Zephyr studied her palm with interest. "The shadow magic is gone from this wound. But your shoulder?" "Still hurts, but less." "Interesting," Nikolai murmured. "Your ma

Laura winced as she tried to move her arm. The new claw marks from the shadow wolf attack burned like fire. She'd noticed something strange though - when her mark had glowed during the fight, the pain had lessened. And when she'd fainted at training, the wound on her bandaged hand had looked smaller for a while. But now it was back to throbbing with each heartbeat."She shouldn't have been out there in the first place!" Lucian's angry voice cut through the night air outside the healers' tent."She's not made of glass," Dante shot back. "Laura can handle herself.""With one good hand? Against shadow wolves?" Lucian's voice rose. "Are you insane?"Laura closed her eyes, exhaustion weighing her down. They were arguing about her like she wasn't even there."Stop it." Her voice was quiet, but something in her tone made both Alphas pause. "Please. Just... stop."The arguing stopped immediately.Laura sat up slowly, her shoulder screaming in protest. "I'm tired. I hurt. And listening to you

Laura rolled to the side, pain shooting up her arm as she landed wrong on her injured hand. The shadow wolf's claws raked the ground where she'd been a second before.Dante was already moving, his blade slicing through the air toward the creature's neck. But shadow wolves were fast. Too fast. It twisted away, black eyes fixed on Laura like she was the only prey that mattered."They're drawn to your mark," Dante growled réalisation setting in as he stepped between her and the wolf again. "Stay close to me."Two more shadow wolves emerged from the darkness, their forms seeming to melt from the shadows themselves. Laura's heart hammered against her ribs. Three against two, and she was fighting with one good hand."Left!" she shouted as one of the creatures circled behind Dante. He spun, blade meeting claws in a shower of sparks. The impact sent him staggering back a step. These weren't the ordinary shadow wolves she had fought. They were bigger and stronger.Laura ducked as the first wol

Voices drifted through the fog in Laura's mind. Deep, familiar voices that made her heart clench with recognition."—power surge was unlike anything I've seen," Zephyr was saying, his tone clinical but worried. "The mark responded to her emotions, but this was beyond what the texts described.""She could have hurt someone," Lucian's gruff voice cut in. "Hell, she could have hurt herself.""But she didn't," Dante's voice was closer, rougher with concern. "She pulled back at the last second. That takes incredible control.""Control?" Nikolai sounded skeptical. "She collapsed, Dante. That's not control."Laura's eyelids felt heavy, but she forced them open. The first thing she saw was Dante's face hovering above her, golden eyes dark with worry. Relief flooded his features when he saw her looking back at him."There she is," he murmured, his hand brushing a strand of hair from her face. "How do you feel?"Laura tried to sit up, but her head spun. Dante's strong hands steadied her, helpin

Zephyr's tent was larger than Laura expected, lined with furs and lit by lanterns that cast dancing shadows across the canvas walls. The Alpha himself stood over a small table covered with ancient-looking papers and leather-bound journals. He looked up when she entered, his cool eyes warming slightly at the sight of her."Laura," he acknowledged with a nod. "Thank you for coming.""Your messenger said you wanted to discuss the family records?" Laura kept her voice steady despite the unease still lingering from her confrontation with Selena.Zephyr gestured for her to approach. "I found something that might interest you." His fingers, always so precise in their movements, traced over a yellowed page. "My great-grandfather wrote about a woman marked by the Moon Goddess."Laura's heart skipped. "The first woman with the primordial mark?""Perhaps." He watched her closely as she moved beside him to see the journal. "The markings described here are different, but the power sounds similar."
