Chapter 1

Thea's POV

My flight was six days away, so I quietly began packing.

A framed photo sat on the nightstand beside my bed. I knew the other person in it better than anyone.

It was Cedric Vaughn.

When I first met him, he'd been exiled from his pack to the mountains where we lived, far from the city. I taught him how to survive out here, proudly promising that I would always make sure he had enough to eat and would never let him starve.

Cedric smiled and took my hand as he said, "I'll become the Alpha of the pack and hold the mating ceremony with you."

Now, I pushed down the turmoil inside me and looked at my mom, Portia Whitmore. "My flight is in six days. I'm leaving."

When I went to get my passport and other documents, Cedric was sitting at the desk, helping my best friend, Rowena Gilmore, with some work. They were sitting close together, discussing pack matters that I couldn't understand.

Rowena noticed me first. She nudged Cedric with her finger.

"I told you I didn't want to keep getting in the way of your mating ceremony with Thea. I can handle this myself. Stop making her wait, or she'll really end up an unwanted Omega."

Cedric didn't even look up from the book in front of him. "Thea won't make a fuss over something this trivial. Besides, what would my mating ceremony be without you there?"

I looked at Cedric and said, "There's no need to prepare for the mating ceremony anymore."

Cedric finally looked up. He froze for a moment.

Then, his face settled into that familiar look—that gentle, patient, and almost indulgent expression.

He said, "Are you going to bring up another one of those pack legends? How many times do I have to tell you that they're just stories the elders made up to fool the pups? Are you seriously saying that this nonsense matters more than Rowena's career?"

Rowena, too, looked at me with a disapproving expression. "Thea, werewolves who've received a modern education don't believe in this kind of thing. Stop being childish."

I watched the two of them draw even closer together, a wave of irritation churning in my chest. I grabbed my things and turned to leave.

Behind me, I heard Rowena trying to persuade Cedric. "Go comfort Thea. Hurry, or she'll start crying again."

Cedric's voice remained calm as he said, "I've spoiled her too much. I've told her countless times that if she wants to be my mate, she needs to know how to prioritize things and learn to keep up with me.

"With her carrying herself in such a manner, how could I possibly feel comfortable making her my Luna?"

When we first met, he told me that the mountains were more suited to werewolves than the city and that even the old legends carried a kind of magic. Now, those same traditions had become obstacles standing in the way of his career.

When Cedric broke his promise for the third year in a row, I had asked to end our relationship.

It was the first time I'd ever seen him lose his composure. The wolf who never even flinched when the world seemed to be falling apart grabbed my wrist with reddened eyes.

His voice was gravelly as he asked, "Thea Redding, are you really going to give up on us because of some ridiculous old legend?"

At that, my heart softened.

After that day, the way everyone in the pack looked at me changed. I became a traitor in their eyes. They whispered about me and shut me out.

At the time, Cedric pulled me into his arms and comforted me. "They're just ignorant. Once you and I complete the mating ceremony, you'll be my Luna. No one will dare bully you over something so trivial again."

I never got my mating ceremony. Instead, I got one broken promise after another, year after year.

Just then, a familiar hand closed around my wrist. Cedric wrapped his arms around me from behind.

"Are you really mad? I know I went too far this time, but I personally promoted Rowena to be my Beta. I'm responsible for seeing this through."

He cupped my face in his hands and gently kissed my eyelids. "How about this, my darling? You can be my date at the next party. How does that sound?"

He'd once promised to take me with him to every important party on the day we officially got together. Once upon a time, I'd looked forward to it, only to watch him take Rowena from one social event to another.

Cedric had justified it, saying, "You're my mate. You only need to come to the really important events. Rowena is just a minor figure in all of this."

I pushed his hand away. "No. Forget about the parties or the mating ceremony. I want none of it."

Cedric's hand froze, and he lowered his voice. "Thea, stop throwing a tantrum. We made a promise with each other. How can you say something like that?"

For some reason, I wanted to laugh. I couldn't believe he was actually blaming me.

He was about to say something when Rowena's voice came from behind us. "Cedric, how are we supposed to analyze the numbers in this month's financial report?"

Cedric kissed my forehead, slipped a necklace into my hand, and walked away.

As I fiddled with the necklace absentmindedly, my phone vibrated.

It was a notification that some money had been transferred into my bank account, followed by a text from Mom.

She said, "Now that you've made up your mind to leave, it's time to start your new life. Don't put yourself through hell again for Cedric."

Thea's POVMy hands reached out and pushed Cedric away. "I'm at work."He didn't say anything else. He simply sat in the corner and quietly watched me work. The moment my shift ended, he rushed over. "Thea, come with me. We'll have our mating ceremony right now. I'll arrange the ceremony all over again. This time, no one will be able to interfere. I won't let you down again."I felt a chill on my ring finger. He had slipped a ring onto it.Under Cedric's expectant gaze, I took it off and tossed it aside. "Cedric, stop this."I looked at him and said, "We ended things a long time ago.""No!" He grabbed my shoulders. "It's not over! How can you decide the fate of our relationship all by yourself? You said we were breaking up, but I never agreed to it."Cedric's eyes were bloodshot as he begged, "Thea, please. Give me one more chance."Before I could even cry out from the pain in my shoulders, Cedric was sent flying by a kick. He hit the floor and lay there, unable to get back up

Thea's POVIt was Rowena. She had lost a lot of weight since the last time I'd seen her."Long time no see," she greeted. She had an awkward expression on her face when she saw me.I stood up and looked at her. "Are you here on vacation?"She nodded. After a long silence, she suddenly said, "The truth is, I love Cedric.""I figured," I said, not really surprised. After all, she couldn't have spent three years coming up with convenient excuses to delay my mating ceremony with Cedric for nothing. It was far too much of a coincidence.Rowena lowered her head and continued, "I'm sorry. I don't even know what came over me. The first time I saw Cedric, I fell for him. Later, when I finally worked up the courage to confess my feelings, I saw him kissing you."She looked at me, her eyes turning red. "That's when I realized you two were together. I immediately felt jealous and resentful. I kept thinking, why? Why would he choose you when I'm so talented and work so hard?"I tossed t

Thea's POVMom texted me. "Thea, Cedric is here."She sent me a video. From the angle, it looked like she'd secretly recorded it.In the video, Cedric was crouched on the floor of my bedroom, crying so hard he could barely catch his breath. He was holding a bouquet of flowers. He'd designed the bouquet himself. It was supposed to be the one he'd give me at our mating ceremony."I'm sorry, Thea."I heard his hoarse voice breaking with emotion."We promised we'd have our mating ceremony. You can't just leave me."He seemed to have been drinking. He reached unsteadily toward the framed photo of us, only to knock it off the table, breaking it. The shattered glass cut his hand, the bright red blood standing out against his skin.Mom sent another message. "Now that you've seen him, do you plan to come back?" I knew she was worried. She was afraid I'd feel sorry for Cedric again and forgive him."Mom, I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon."I sent her several photos of t

Even when they argued, she'd never given him the silent treatment.Thea once said, "If I stopped answering you, you'd worry yourself sick looking everywhere for me. The mountains are so vast. He wiped his eyes, and his fingers came away wet with tears. He hesitated before dialing Portia's number.Soon, an irritated female voice answered. "What do you want?"Cedric clung to the call desperately like his life depended on it. In a trembling voice, he said, "Mrs. Redding, where's Thea? Please, let me talk to her.""Cedric, Thea is gone."There was a brief silence on the other end.Portia added, "She left. Her flight was today."Cedric felt as though he'd been hit by a bolt of lightning. So Thea hadn't been at the airport to see him off. She'd been leaving him behind and parting ways with him.

Thea's POVI began handing over the work I still had left to other wolves. Every one of them looked at me with a mixture of pity and contempt."Rowena only got a minor injury, and the Alpha stayed up all night taking care of her. Look at Thea. She's been throwing herself at him. Now, she's getting what she deserved."I used to want to fight anyone who said things like that. But now, I didn't feel a thing.I hadn't planned on seeing Cedric again. But the very next day, I realized he'd left some work documents at my house. I was about to text him and ask him to come get them, only to discover that he'd blocked me.So, I went to his house.I took a deep breath before pushing open the front door. The scene inside made me forget how to breathe for a moment.Rowena was sprawled on the bed, her clothes disheveled. Cedric was right on top of her, their bodies pressed tightly together."Thea, listen to me. It's not what you think!" Rowena struggled to get out of Cedric's arms, but he h

Thea's POVThe next day was the Spring Hunt Festival.I sat in a corner, lost in thought, when someone gently ran a hand through my hair."Still mad at me?" Cedric placed a beautiful bow beside me and winked. "Consider it an apology."He shrugged and said, "Don't laugh at me. It's the first time I've ever picked out a bow for someone. Rowena gave me plenty of advice before I finally settled on this one for you."I instinctively reached for the bow, but before I could say anything, Rowena called from nearby."Cedric, come here!"Cedric immediately hurried over. He took the bow from Rowena, wrapped an arm around her, and corrected her stance.Rowena glanced at me with an apologetic look. "Sorry, Thea. You know I've never been good with a bow. I had to ask Cedric for help."I watched the two of them laughing together in the distance.I was the one who had taught them both how to shoot. Rowena had been my classmate at the academy. She'd been clever ever since we were pups. Whil
