CHAPTER 009: Synchronized Thrusts

Prince Calix stood watching me, impatience written all over his face. “I wasn't laughing when I said it, was I?”

“You want to dump me with another one of your siblings? I almost got decapitated minutes ago by Princess Zephira, in case you’ve forgotten. She would’ve succeeded too if you hadn’t shown up.”

“A fact I’m aware of.”

“No, clearly you’re not, because if you were, you wouldn’t be taking me to your brother!”

Calix didn’t flinch. Whatever softness he displayed minutes ago when he'd found me in a pool of my blood was gone. This was the general commander again. The executioner. The son of the man who killed my parents.

“You can either move on your own accord,” he said, “or I’ll have guards move you. Either way, you’re going.”

Behind him, Lyta, Tundra, and Snaky were exchanging looks, probably wondering if I’d grown a second head. Maybe it was because I’d raised my voice. Maybe it was because I dared speak to their master like the asshole he was.

I didn’t care. I was too tire

*** ~~CALIX MALZARETH~~ *** The little wolf seemed to think she was still in her tiny castle, barking orders around. Keeping her alive was proving to be a challenge, mostly from her own doing. “She's a feisty one,” I said to Mira. “You'd get used to it.” Lorcan grinned, his fangs catching the light. “I like her already.” “Then my work here is done.” I was already turning toward the door. And gods, I wanted to mean that. Wanted to walk away and never look back. I couldn't tell why I wanted her alive anyway. Her special blood? If she died, the priestess would just find another way to solve our problem. The wolf was becoming an extra burden I didn't need right now. Since we came back home, I’d done nothing but look after her. Endured my father’s venom. Beheaded two palace guards. Watched my brother and his wife feed while simultaneously screwing a feeder like it was a banquet-slash-orgy. All for one wolf. One fragile, red-haired thorn I couldn’t get out of my head. Also, I was p

*** ~~LYRIC VAELGOR~~ *** It was way past midnight, and the city outside my window was still alive. Apparently, just like Prince Calix, the citizens of Noctis Vhaelor didn’t sleep at night. Why would they? Bloodsucking predators made better hunters at night. I hadn't even been here for up to a day, and this was my second bath. At least they fed me. Real food too. I’d wondered if I had to feed on blood with them. I sank deeper into the water, scrubbing off dried blood that had gotten stuck somewhere around my ribs. Prince Calix's pets—no, his puppets—were hovering around me as I bathed. Lyta sat cross-legged on a velvet cushion near the wall. Tundra paced back and forth. Snaky leaned against the wall with her arms crossed and her expression set in that signature dead-eyed scowl. “Is this how it’s going to be from now on?” I asked, not bothering to hide my annoyance. “You follow me everywhere I go?” “Master asked us to keep you company,” Lyta replied, smiling as usual. Her con

Tai was just beneath my skin, pacing like a caged beast, begging to be let out, begging to do the honors of ripping Syva’s throat out himself. The air changed. Syva stepped back. She must have felt my inner demon's rage too. “You should go home,” I said. “Your… your face,” she whispered, voice trembling. “You’re shifting. How is that possible?” I didn’t respond. She was right. Parts of Tai were flashing. I could feel my bones itching, runes shimmering across my collarbone. I was standing on my very last edge of self-control, holding Tai back. “Leave,” I repeated. “No one has shifted in years,” she said, backing into a column. “How did you beat the curse?” “I’m going to say this one more time, Syva. Leave or I’m going to let Tai out so he can do what he's been begging to do for minutes now. Kill you.” “You can’t kill me. The council would have your head. But do you know who's going to die soon? Your wolf lover. You think you can humiliate me? Use me and dump me? I’ll make sure

The words didn’t register at first. They hovered in the air and echoed in my ears like a curse. “You want me to marry Syva?” I repeated, pushing myself off the bed. “Why not just throw me into a pit of fire while you’re at it?” “Do not mock me, Calix.” “I’m not mocking you. I’m mocking the absurdity of your idea.” “You laid hands on her. There must be restitution.” I dragged a hand through my hair, pacing now. My muscles were tight, and I didn’t know if I wanted to scream or shift—or both. “Why are you all acting like I killed her?” I asked. “If you had,” he said, folding his arms behind his back, “this would be a very different conversation.” Right. What would they have done? Execute me? Exile me? Or worse—strip me of my title and toss me into the Underrealm to rot beside the cursed ones? He kept going. “The deed is done. You laid hands on a councilman’s daughter, and Lady Syva has stated that the only apology she’d be accepting is a betrothal and a wedding.” I stopped paci

Bima's gaze was on us now, a predator sizing up his next meal. "Your wish is my command, Princess." "Well, this just got messy," Lyta said. They all edged closer to me, seeking solace in numbers. "I knew the wolf bitch was going to lead us to our deaths," whispered Snaky. "A very painful death,” Tundra hissed. I breathed in deep. Then I pulled off my hooded cloak and dropped it on the floor. My hair spilled over my shoulders as I took a single step forward and raised my voice. “Fight me first.” The crowd hushed like someone had pressed a blade to their throats. Bima’s lips curled. A slow, wicked smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “A hero, I see.” “There’s nothing heroic about dying first,” Snaky muttered behind me. Loud enough for me to hear. Loud enough to be annoying. I ignored her. Instead, I walked across the pit, boots kicking up dust, until I reached the fallen fighter—the poor bastard Bima had just turned into meat. His sword lay beside his twisted hand. I bent, picke

*** ~~CALIX MALZARETH~~ *** I listened to the words coming out of Lorcan’s messenger's mouth, finding each one more ridiculous than the last. “…And then Princess Zephira beheaded the trainee and took the wolf girl to the dungeon. She and your other pets are imprisoned right now.” For a second, I just sat there, at my desk, blinking slowly at him, my brain needing time to translate the words into a language I could understand. The report I’d been writing for the council meeting that was barely two hours from now was long forgotten. I couldn’t decide whether to rip the messenger's throat out or find Lyric and rip hers out instead. I stood slowly, pushing my chair back with a screech. That stubborn little wolf. “If she isn’t already dead when I get there,” I said, “I’ll kill her myself.” I headed for the door. “My prince,” the messenger called after me, hurrying. “There’s something else you should know.” I stopped halfway through summoning my wings. My voice came out deeper.

*** ~~LYRIC VAELGOR~~ *** Was it really too much to ask for a single day of peace in this kingdom? It was one mistake. One tiny, impulsive decision to escape the four walls of my glorified prison cell called a bedroom for some fresh air and bloodshed. And yes—fine—maybe everything went downhill after that. But it wasn’t entirely my fault. If the demon prince had warned me that my blood was some sort of demon booster, maybe I’d have been more cautious when stabbing that trainee in the arena. Maybe. What was he so mad about anyway? I had expected him to be pissed, of course. He always was. Anger looked natural on him, like a second skin. But this? This level of wrath? The kind of rage that made his magic crackle, that made the walls tremble? That was new. And completely uncalled for. I didn't die. “Put me down,” I said. “I’ve done nothing wrong.” His grip loosened, to my surprise, letting me land on my feet. But he didn't release me. Those strong, rough hands lingered, holding

That didn't sound good. Was there another werewolf residing in Noctis Vhaelor, or did Zephira have me in mind when talking about a wolf's execution? One could only hope. “Where did you get that information, Zephira?” Calix asked, his voice lowering into an octave that made the room feel smaller. “I’m surprised you’re asking me. Aren’t you among the people who matter in this kingdom? You should have access to classified information.” "Cut the bullshit, Zephira. Spit it out. Who told you?" She crossed her arms. "You won’t even allow me to gloat. Fine. I met your lover, Syva Vocarnis, earlier today, and she seemed... gleeful. Naturally, whenever Syva is happy, it often involves you. So I was curious. I asked, and Syva’s reply was that you were rough with her last night, which she believes has something to do with the wolf. So she told her father that your pet had to die. You know Councilman Yai Vorcanis. He loves his daughter.” I was finding it a bit difficult to follow Zephira’s mo

She didn’t even seem to notice. Or maybe she did. Maybe that was the point. I’d reminded her at least a dozen times that we had guests arriving soon. She just kept slipping deeper beneath the perfumed water, steam curling around her. This is the price of alliances, I told myself. The price of playing the long game. The price of power. Her head lolled back against the rim of the tub. Her lips were parted, breath coming in slow, steady puffs. Her hands—Gods.I stood.“Seriously?” I asked. “As much as I’d enjoy watching you masturbate at any other time, we have a meeting in a couple of minutes. ***~~CALIX MALZARETH~~*** My hands were wrapped around Lorcan's throat, and his body was swinging halfway out the window of his chambers.“Let him go, Calix,” Mira begged behind me, her voice shaking. “It wasn’t his fault.”Lorcan grunted, blood trailing from his nose down to his lips. One of his eyes was already swelling shut. I had punched him three times before I even spoke. Maybe more. I wasn’t counting. I didn’t care.“Tell me where she is,” I growled, tightening my grip, “or I swear to the ancestors and the gods, even the goddess of Velmira, that I will throw you off this window, and your head will get to the ground before your body.”“I don’t know,” Lorcan croaked, his fingernails digging into my wrist.I shifted my hold and shoved him forward another inch. His feet scrabbled on the windowsill. Mira screamed.“You’re lying,” I hissed. “You rigged the lottery in Father’s favor.”“Because he’s the king! And he asked me to!”“We had a deal.”“I know you’re scary,” he gasped, hi

I woke up with a pounding headache. And pain. The first thing I registered was the aching stretch of my limbs. My arms and legs were pulled tight, splayed out in an X. Metal cuffs bit into my wrists and ankles. The table beneath me was cold, and it felt like iron. Heavy. Brutal. Like it had seen a thousand prisoners before me.My throat was dry. My lips were cracked. My head throbbed, a dull, pulsing echo behind my eyes.I realized soon enough that something sharp was on my arm.My body jerked against the restraints.“Lie still, wolf,” came a voice.Revka.Her face appeared above me, framed in shadows. Her mouth was flat, her eyes empty. Cold.“It will hurt less if you do.”My vision swam. I could feel something burning through my veins. A thick pull. Like my blood was being siphoned straight out of me.“Where am I?” I asked. My voice was barely more than a whisper.“Somewhere,” she said blandly.“You need to let me go.”“You’re not going anywhere anytime soon, Princess.”I blinked ag

The next few seconds happened in a blur.Calix shoved me behind him so fast I nearly stumbled, his body coiling in front of mine like a shield. And then his sword was out. The sound of metal unsheathing sent silence through the room. All around us, guards flinched. Steel scraped in response. One by one, the king’s soldiers drew their blades, stepping forward. Boots marching against the stone floor echoed around the room, louder than they should have. The elites and royals who hadn’t left yet started backing away, their fine robes rustling like leaves caught in a gust. They were frightened. They should be.Calix’s blade was steady in his hand, his body taut with fury. But I knew that if he made a single wrong move, they’d all come for him. Even his own guards would come too. Yes, they were as alert as they should be to protect their commander. But still, in the end, the king was the grand commander of the Khra'gixxian army. This wasn’t just a prince versus a kingdom. This was a prince

I felt the king's stare like a claw digging into my spine, but I didn’t flinch. I leaned into Calix instead, lifting my chin. Let him look. When Lorcan had rattled off the rules earlier, he’d mentioned that the royal family had to draw last, as some sort of show of leadership.Lucky us.I scanned the room again, taking in the other Khra’gixxes with the royal markings. Some were old, their bodies shriveled and hunched. Some were young, looking almost as terrified as the invaders they were supposed to claim.Others looked somewhere in between—middle-aged and cold-eyed, ready to add new blood to their aging lines.Cousins. Uncles. Grandparents. And so on.The lucky invaders were the ones picked by one of the old Khra'gixxes. A wrinkled, broken thing would be too tired to use them properly.I watched the royal members step up one after the other to pick from the baskets. One by one, names were drawn. One by one, the invaders were claimed. But somehow—miraculously—Mae was still there.Stil

Back in Velmira, reaching into Mae's mind had been as easy as breathing. I could mindlink with her without thinking. A simple nudge, a focused thought, and the connection would slip open like a door left on a latch. But here—In this large hall with so many supernatural bodies, it was like shouting into a hurricane.I narrowed my focus. Tried again. Reaching, searching.Mae.Mae.Mae.Nothing.The threads tangled and twisted against each other, too many open minds coming to me at once.Frustration burned through my chest. I wanted to shake her. I wanted her to know I was coming for her, that there would be no rest for her here.I pushed harder. And that was when I realized something was wrong.I wasn’t just brushing against minds anymore.I was in them.Reading them. People's thoughts. I'd been so focused on Mae that I hadn't realized the significance of the words I could hear.‘Weak humans. They won’t last one breeding session.’‘Heard the mages are good in bed, with their spells and

His body jerked in surprise, but he didn’t pull away. He let me. He wanted me to. My wolf's teeth broke the skin at the curve of his neck. His blood flooded my mouth. It was like drinking lightning. My entire body lit up, the bond roaring to life between us until I couldn’t tell where I ended and he began. Calix growled low and deep, his cock thrusting up into me again as I drank from him, matching his savagery with my own. He was mine too. And I would claim him as ruthlessly as he claimed me. When I finally tore my mouth away, blood smeared my lips, my chin, his skin. He stared down at me, wild and wrecked, his hand cradling the back of my head like I was the most precious thing he’d ever touched. “My beautiful, vicious wolf,” he whispered, voice wrecked. “You were made for me.” He caught my mouth in another kiss—filthy, desperate. Blood and spit and hunger slicked between our lips. Our teeth clashed, tongues tangling messily, neither of us caring about grace or tenderness.

When his lips fell on mine, the world swept away. Calix kissed like he fought—ruthless, claiming every sound, every breath. His tongue slid against mine, deep and slow, making my body tremble. One of his hands fisted in my hair, tugging just enough to make me gasp against his lips. The other hand gripped my waist, pinning me beneath the full heat and weight of him. I arched against him, desperate for more, for all the things he’d denied me the past week. His teeth grazed my bottom lip before he bit down gently, pulling a whimper from my throat. He swallowed the sound with a growl, his hips grinding against mine. “You are so stubborn,” he rasped against my mouth. “You make me want to break every bone in your body, and at the same time, you make me want to protect you.” “By protecting, do you mean caging?” I whispered back, dragging my nails down his back, feeling his muscles ripple under my touch. He pulled back slightly, just enough to look at me. His eyes weren’t just hungry—the

“Come down, little wolf,” Calix said, eyes never leaving mine as I struggled to get my magic under control. Reluctantly, I began to descend the stairs. My fingers were still tingling, shadows still retreating beneath my skin like ink pulled back into a quill. Each step felt heavier than the last. At the foot of the stairs, I stopped. “Come closer,” he said. I did. Step by step. Until I stood in front of both princes. No one spoke. Lorcan stared openly, his eyes gleaming as they traced the faint glow of runes flashing along my collarbone and arms. “I’m very sure that decades from now, they’ll write a song about you, Lyric,” Lorcan said. “A wolf with magical powers.” Calix hissed a spell under his breath, and immediately, the glow vanished. He stood slowly, body taut with tension. “We’re all going to agree right now that this never happened,” he said, glaring at Lorcan. “What part?” Lorcan asked innocently. “That your mate didn’t try to kill our father, or that she has magical
