Chapter 24: Lucian, the Master Hacker

"I'll go with you," Lucian said without hesitation.

Evelyn looked surprised. "You have connections at the police station too? Buddy, that's impressive!" The top man at Nightfall really lives up to his name!

Lucian caught the strange, unspoken note in her tone.

He did know many powerful officials and politicians. But this time, he decided not to use his connections.

The two arrived at the police station quickly.

Damien hadn't fully recovered, and Mrs. Blackwood was staying to look after him, so the Blackwoods had sent only their family lawyer.

Lorraine showed up with Clara and a Hart Group executive.

Clara could walk normally now. She was dressed to the nines, standing tall and proud like a peacock spreading its tail.

The officers stood in the center of the room, wearing stern expressions.

The moment Lorraine saw Evelyn, she urged them loudly, "Arrest her quickly! Don't let this girl get away! Don't listen to her excuses, she's very cunning!"

"Sister, I'm glad you came to turn yourself in. I hope you'll reform and start a new life." Clara smiled thinly, smug to the bone.

Evelyn ignored their barking and said to the officers, "I'm here to prove my innocence. I'm innocent. My lawyer will arrive soon."

"You think saying you're innocent is enough? The company has mountains of evidence that you embezzled!"

"On the ninth of March last year, three million was transferred from the company account into your personal account, with no trace afterward."

"Two years ago, on the second of June, a partner's payment of thirty million was moved into a private account, and you never handed it over to the company!"

"The evidence is airtight. You embezzled that money! I have enough here to put you in prison for life!"

As she listened to the "crimes" being read out, Evelyn found it both laughable and heartbreaking.

She hadn't known much about business back then, and Lorraine had controlled the company's finances. She'd linked her salary card to the company's official account because Lorraine said it would make taxes easier.

Something had felt off, but she hadn't understood it, so she agreed.

She never imagined that today it would all become evidence against her.

She hadn't taken a cent. The card used for those transactions had never been in her hands.

"Evelyn Hart, I'm so disappointed in you!"

Lorraine accused her with righteous fury, her voice echoing through the whole hall.

An officer had to step in. "Quiet! No shouting in here!"

Lorraine fell silent at once.

Clara smiled apologetically. "Mama just got too worked up. I hope you understand."

Standing beside Evelyn, Lucian watched the farce unfold and finally understood why she had been "homeless" in the middle of the night.

No one could stand a family like this.

He didn't want to waste time. He'd already learned the outline from Evelyn on the drive over.

So he cut straight in. "Are you finished with your nonsense?"

Clara and Lorraine felt the force of his presence and realized at once that this was no ordinary man. He must be the "lover" Damien had mentioned.

No wonder Evelyn is so bold now.

Clara said slyly, "Sir, my sister must have deceived you too."

"You talk too much. I wouldn't mind silencing you." Lucian shot her a glare.

A chill ran down Clara's spine, and she felt as though she couldn't breathe.

This man is terrifying. He's no nobody.

This is the aura of someone at the very top, someone who has held power for many years and decided who lives and who falls.

How did Evelyn get so lucky as to land a man like this?

Clara burned with jealousy, but she didn't dare say another word.

Then Lucian took out his laptop in front of everyone.

He opened a string of data files and spreadsheets and turned them toward the room.

"These transaction records show the company funds that some people claim were embezzled. After being laundered through several channels, every single one of them ended up in Ms. Lorraine Lowell's overseas bank accounts."

"Ms. Lowell, you'd better explain this."

He submitted the evidence to the officers to refute the accusations.

When Lorraine saw it, her face went white, her legs buckled, and she collapsed onto the floor.

How is this possible?!

I hired a laundering expert to wipe it all clean. How did this man find everything?

A chill went through her. Her mind went blank, and for the moment she couldn't speak.

The company executives who had colluded with Lorraine to falsify the books and frame Evelyn wished they could slip out of the room as fast as they could.

Evelyn was equally stunned, grateful, and filled with admiration as she watched Lucian solve her crisis so easily.

So his side job is being a computer expert, not a spy.

"Buddy, thank you so much!" she whispered in his ear.

"Just cook me a few more good meals," Lucian said calmly.

"No problem!" Evelyn nodded, beaming.

The Marlowes' lawyer would arrive later, and in time he could prove her innocence, since she really hadn't embezzled anything.

But that would take a long time and only make Lorraine and Clara more smug.

This was so much better. A slap in the face, loud and clear!

"Lorraine Lowell, so you were the one who embezzled company funds. I never imagined you had problems in your private life and in your work. You even set a trap so I'd take the fall for you."

"If Old Madam Hart knew what kind of daughter-in-law she has, I wonder how she'd react. Tsk tsk!"

Evelyn smiled as she said it.

She was willing to bet Old Madam Hart knew nothing about it.

After all, what the old woman hated most was being deceived under her own nose.

With both the affair and the embezzlement exposed, Lorraine's life was over.

An officer approached her. "Madam, please come with us to the interview room next door."

"No! You can't arrest my mother!" Clara saw the situation slipping and quickly tried to shift the blame onto Evelyn.

"She tried to kill the Blackwoods' eldest son! She committed attempted murder! If you're going to arrest someone, arrest her first!" Clara screamed, pointing at Evelyn.

At last, the Blackwoods' lawyer got to work. "This woman is suspected of attacking my client, leaving him in intensive care and unable to leave his bed. She must be detained immediately."

Hearing this, the officer looked at Evelyn and asked sternly, "Miss, do you have anything to say?"
