Chapter 1

My voice came out hoarse and full of pain, echoing through the empty, crumbling laundry plant.

I glared at the well-dressed people standing in front of me.

Ever since I was thrown into this damned post-apocalyptic power fantasy novel eight years ago, some invisible story inertia had twisted everyone's minds.

To prepare for my younger brother, Samuel Grant, the useless so-called hero who failed to awaken his powers, they had turned me—the only S-Rank ability user in the entire colony—into a cripple left to die in filthy wastewater.

My mother, Claire Grant, stood ankle-deep in the chemical runoff. Even after I tore open my shirt to show the scar across my chest, she didn't look guilty at all.

She froze for only a second before throwing herself onto the ground. She slapped the foul-smelling muddy water with both hands and cried even louder than before.

"Ethan! How can you be so selfish? The colony leaders all agreed to remove your crystal core back then! Samuel is the Chosen One! He's the only one who can lead humanity into the future! You only gave up a little, but Samuel is risking his life on the front lines!"

"A little?" I laughed. The sound echoed through the dark factory like a dying scream.

I pointed at my legs, which had shriveled badly because my nerves were dead.

"My chest was cut open while I was still alive. My ability circuit was destroyed. My spine was broken! You dumped me in this laundry plant outside the colony walls, where nobody even gets a protective suit! I soak my hands in strong chemicals and wash other people's bloody clothes every day! And you call that giving up a little?"

"You were just unlucky!"

My father, Jasper Grant, who had been standing in the back with his clean, pressed clothes, finally couldn't hold back anymore.

He strode forward, yanked Claire to her feet, then pointed at me and shouted.

"A worthless cripple who can't even stand should be grateful we're still letting you live! The zombie horde is surrounding the colony. The shield generator is broken. Only the leftover energy from your old S-Rank ability can guide the repairs. Of course you're the one who has to go! Should millions of people in the colony die just because of you?"

He had always been that heartless.

Eight years ago, he was the one who pinned me down while they injected me with three times the normal dose of anesthesia.

"Jasper, stop wasting time with him. We're running out of time."

The soft, sweet voice made my stomach turn.

My ex-wife, Chloe Carter, carefully stepped around the dirty water in a pair of custom leather boots before stopping in front of my wheelchair.

She wore an expensive radiation-resistant coat today. Around her neck hung the S-Rank ability pendant Samuel had given her. That pendant had been made from scraps carved off my crystal core.

"Ethan, don't push this too far."

Chloe looked down at me with nothing but contempt. "Samuel is trapped near the central zone. If you delay fixing the shield generator and he gets hurt because of it, I'll never forgive you."

Just looking at her face made me sick.

"Chloe," I said, staring into her eyes, "did your hands shake eight years ago when you cut open my chest while I was unconscious?"

Her face stiffened for a moment. But she quickly sneered again. "You owed Samuel that! A loser like you should feel lucky that you got to help him succeed!"

"Fine." Every trace of emotion disappeared from my face. A dead silence surrounded me.

I pulled my thin, torn work uniform closed, gripped the armrests of my wheelchair, and said, "I don't care what happens today. I'm not going. You'll never make me sacrifice myself for Samuel again."

The next day at noon, the sky was clear. The colony's central plaza was packed with people.Four years ago, this was the place where I was attacked by millions online. It was also where my own family chained me to a wheelchair and pushed me toward certain death in the radiation zone.Today, it had become Samuel's execution ground.I sat on the Judgment Throne in a sharp black commander's uniform. My chest was covered with the highest military honors. Beside me stood the fully armed soldiers of Rising Sun. The sight was overwhelming.Samuel was dragged onto the execution platform by two guards. He no longer looked human. His body was covered in rotting sores and gave off a sickening stench. When he struggled to lift his head and saw me looking down at him, the only eye he had left filled with jealousy and shock. Then it turned into pure fear."Ethan... Ethan!"Samuel suddenly began struggling wildly. He slammed his forehead against the wooden platform as tears poured down his face."Eth

The zombie horde retreated. The crisis was finally over. The colony welcomed the commander of Rising Sun—me—with the highest level of ceremony.Millions of surviving citizens packed both sides of the wide central avenue.Flowers and ribbons filled the sky. Everyone shouted my name without stopping. My motorcade slowly passed through the slums on the edge of the colony.Near a filthy drainage ditch at the edge of the crowd, two skinny old people in torn clothes stared at the giant screen broadcasting the celebration. The moment Claire saw the familiar face on the screen, her whole body shook violently. After four years of madness, the shock briefly brought her back to her senses."Ethan... That's Ethan!"Claire let out a heartbreaking scream. She somehow found the strength to pull Jasper up from the ground. He was still crippled. The two of them stumbled through the crowd and desperately rushed toward the middle of the avenue."Commander! Watch out!" The guards immediately raised their

Time was the most worthless thing in the apocalypse. Four years passed in the blink of an eye.Over those four years, the people living in the colony came and went. Samuel was finally found guilty. Three days later, the colony's highest court handed down its final sentence.Samuel was sentenced to death. He was stripped of all civil rights and would be publicly executed in the central plaza at the end of the year.As his accomplices and the people who benefited from his crimes, Jasper, Claire, and Chloe also paid a heavy price. The court stripped the Grants of every privilege they had in the colony. All their property was confiscated.Jasper and Claire, who had once lived in a luxurious apartment in the colony's central district, were thrown out by heavily armed guards. They were exiled to the Class C slums on the outer edge of the colony. Even stray dogs avoided that place. It was the same place where they had abandoned me years ago.Now fate had finally come full circle. After his ribs were broken during the public riot, Jasper never received proper treatment. He became crippled. Every day, he dragged his half-paralyzed body through piles of ga

  • Betrayed in the Apocalypse   Chapter 6

Samuel's fate after losing the protection of the Destiny System was even worse than I had imagined. After going completely insane in the rebel camp, he was dragged back to the colony by the military's special forces. Iron hooks pierced through his body as they hauled him along like an animal. The national hero who had once been admired wherever he went had become humanity's greatest enemy. But something even more terrifying was happening inside his body. The Destiny System had completely disconnected and crashed. Without its suppression, half of my S-Rank crystal core that had been ripped from my chest years ago began violently rejecting him.The crystal core tore through his blood vessels and muscles from the inside."Ah! It hurts! Help me!"Samuel screamed as he was chained to a prison transport and paraded through the streets. His skin began to rot away. Chunks of decaying flesh covered in foul-smelling black fluid fell from his body. The handsome face that countless women had once

Claire's desperate scream was so loud that it even pierced through the thick radiation barrier. I could faintly hear it.Everyone thought I had disappeared inside that blinding purple light. But at that moment, even after being swallowed by billions of units of radiation, I didn't melt away. Instead, I was protected inside a strange dark blue energy shield.Beep!"Destiny System 1.0 emergency intervention activated! Original host Samuel Grant's public reputation has dropped to zero. His character has completely collapsed. The protagonist's Destiny Points have fallen below the required threshold! Warning! The wager experiment conditions have been triggered! The world's timeline is undergoing an irreversible deviation!"Suddenly, I heard a cold, mechanical voice. There was even a hint of panic hidden under the electronic distortion.Sitting in my broken wheelchair, I looked at the violent radiation waves around me being blocked by the blue shield. I smiled coldly.I had waited eight year
