Chapter 2

Author: Peachie 11
I stared at the note, and a chill ran through me.

If Liam had kept it from me because he thought I would complain about wasting money on another toy, I could understand that.

But what was he supposed to mean by telling Trixie that I worked hard to make money while only he wanted her to be happy?

He was brainwashing five-year-old Trixie into believing that everything I did was for myself, while he was the only one who truly cared about her.

I took a picture of the note and put it back.

Then I stepped out of Trixie's room and found the master bedroom door ajar.

I could hear the shower running. Gina was in the bathroom.

Liam was on the couch, playing a game with my controller.

He was startled when he heard me. "Jordan, you're still up?"

Liam wouldn't look me in the eye. "I thought your controller might be broken, so I was checking it out."

I had only unboxed it last week. It couldn't have been broken.

I leaned against the doorframe and studied him. "Liam, you really have a thing for using other people's stuff."

Liam's face went pale in an instant. "Jordan, if I'm causing you trouble, I'll move out tomorrow."

If this had happened before, I would have told him he was overthinking it.

Tonight, I merely smiled.

"You don't have to. You get taken care of here, there's someone to spoil you, and you don't even have to spend a dime."

Liam went still.

The shower stopped. Gina came out wrapped in a towel just in time to hear me.

She frowned. "Jordan, what's with the attitude? Liam helps with Trixie and cooks for us. Not thanking him is one thing, but do you really have to be so nasty?"

I looked at Gina, whom I had shared a bed with for seven years.

She'd rushed to Liam's defense faster than she had ever defended me.

"I'm tired." I went straight to bed and turned my back on them.

Then I added, "Gina, sign Trixie up for an art class tomorrow. The fee is four thousand dollars. You can pay for it."

"Four thousand dollars? Have you lost your mind? We don't have that kind of money to throw around!" Gina argued.

"Didn't you spend more than five thousand dollars on that watch last week?" I asked.

Gina fell silent.

Liam stood to the side. "Jordan, please don't fight over me. This is all my fault."

"It's not your fault. Jordan's acting like a total jerk! He's being unreasonable!" Gina shouted.

She stormed out and took Liam to the guest room. "Ignore him. You can sleep in the guest room tonight. I'll bring you some blankets."

I opened my eyes and stared up at the ceiling in the dark.

The Barbie doll and the note came to mind. Then I remembered the plain band on Liam's ring finger when he was playing that game.

It was a classic Cartier ring. Gina had one too.

She had told me hers was just a ring she'd bought to wear with her business clothes.

So they were actually a matching set.

I pulled out my phone and opened my banking app.

I wanted to find out just how much of our money was gone.

Just then, Trixie heard the commotion and ran out of the apartment with her new toy in her arms. When she saw the police holding Liam down, she burst into tears and ran over to him, clinging to his leg."Daddy! Don't take my daddy!"Everyone went silent. The officer's expression hardened as he looked at Gina.Gina went pale. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed to the floor. The gold bars scattered across the floor no longer looked like a fortune. They only exposed how foolish she had been.In the interrogation room, Gina was still trying to save herself.I watched her sob through the one-way glass and felt nothing.Lana stood beside me, holding the thick stack of evidence."Jordan, you really backed them into a corner. Theft between spouses can be hard to prosecute, but with an outsider like Liam involved, this becomes a joint crime. And…"Lana pointed at Gina on the screen. "She'll do anything to shift the blame onto Liam and get a lighter sentence."Sure enough, Gina's h

"You can call the police now. Oh, and bring the private investigator too. I want Gina and Liam caught in the act," I said. There was a brief pause on the other end of the line before Lana gave a quiet laugh. "Jordan, you're really scary. But well done."I hung up, closed my laptop, and got up to change.I chose a black suit that looked solemn and severe. I looked ready for a funeral. And I was.I was going to bury my dead marriage and those two idiots who had no idea what was coming. Before I left, I checked the time. It was 3:00 pm.It was just before the banks closed, and pawn shops were still open.Gina and Liam's good days were over.…Lana, four police officers, and I met downstairs at the entrance to the building.Lana nodded at me and held up her tablet. It was showing live security footage from my apartment. On the screen, Gina and Liam were carrying several bags of all sizes, sneakily making their way toward the door. The travel bag filled with my gold bars, diamo

"Call the police?" Nancy scoffed and pulled a switchblade from her pocket, casually spinning it around her finger. "Go ahead. While you're at it, tell them what you and Liam are to each other. Is this apartment even in your name?"Gina immediately backed down. She was a government employee, and the last thing she wanted was a scandal that could damage her career. Also, if I found out some thug had broken into the apartment, Gina knew she'd be in serious trouble. She turned on Liam. The affection she had shown him earlier was gone. Now she looked at him with nothing but blame and disgust. "Liam, this is your mess. Deal with it!"Liam nervously walked over to Nancy and tried to pull her to her feet. "Let's talk outside. We shouldn't do this here.""We'll talk right here!" Nancy shoved him away. "Transfer ten thousand dollars to me right now, and I'll leave. Otherwise, I'll go to Gina's workplace and put up a banner saying she stole another woman's husband!""I don't have that mu

Gina didn't stop Trixie. Instead, she watched her with an eager look.Trixie hesitated and glanced at the photo of the two of us hanging on the wall.Liam immediately pulled out a new toy from behind his back. It was one Gina had always refused to buy because it was too expensive."Call me Daddy, and this is yours," Liam said.Trixie's eyes lit up.Without hesitation, she wrapped her arms around Liam's neck and called out clearly, "Daddy!""That's my good girl!" Liam kissed Trixie hard on the cheek.Gina laughed. "That's more like it. Liam is more of a father than Jordan ever was. Now this is a real family.""A real family."Watching from the screen, I felt deeply hurt by what I saw.I had worked myself to the bone to give Trixie the best education and life. In the end, a toy and a few sweet words meant more to her than I did.My daughter had accepted another man as her father for the sake of a toy.Gina, my wife, was scheming to take my money for some loser, even willing t

Gina and Liam both gasped.Gina's anger turned to panic. "Put up the apartment as collateral? Then where are we supposed to live?""We can rent a place or move back to your old house." I spoke like it was no big deal.Liam went pale and pulled Trixie closer without thinking, as if his easy life was about to disappear."How long will you be gone this time?" Liam asked cautiously."I should be gone for about a week. Take care of things at home while I'm gone, and try not to spend too much," I said.I closed my suitcase and picked up my bag. "I'm leaving now. The overnight flight is cheaper."Gina was still trying to process the news that we might go broke. She didn't even see me off and just waved impatiently. "Fine, go. Just hurry up and get the money."I walked out and closed the door behind me. As soon as it shut, I heard Gina complaining inside. "Just my luck! I married a man who only knows how to make money, and now even the money is gone. What's the point of staying marri

After I hung up, I looked out at the traffic below and smiled to myself. If Gina and Liam were so deeply in love and cared so little about money, I wanted to see how long that "true love" would last without it.That evening, I came home carrying an elegant cake box.Liam was sitting on the couch with a face mask on, watching a variety show. Gina sat beside him, peeling an orange for him.Liam's face lit up when he saw me. "Jordan, did you get the cake? I've been craving it all afternoon."I handed him the box. "Yeah. I got it from the bakery downtown. I waited in line for an hour."Liam took it happily, but his expression fell the moment he opened the box.Inside was a dry sponge cake, the cheap kind sold by the pound at a grocery market."What… what is this?" Liam asked.Gina leaned over to look and frowned. "Jordan, you did that on purpose, didn't you? Liam wanted the mousse from that fancy dessert shop, and you bought some cheap cake instead? What are you trying to do, piss
