Chapter 3

Author: Peachie 11
I unlocked the banking app with my fingerprint, and the account screen came up.

I didn't check my main account. I had moved that money somewhere safe a long time ago.

Instead, I checked the card I had given Gina and our joint account, which we had called our family fund.

What I saw made my stomach drop all over again.

The balance was 48 dollars.

I laughed in disbelief.

Every month, I would put seven thousand dollars into that joint account for our household expenses and savings. After seven years, there should have been a substantial amount sitting there.

Now, there wasn't even enough left for a decent dinner.

…

The next day was Saturday.

When I woke up, the other side of the bed was cold.

Gina hadn't come back to the master bedroom last night.

I walked out and heard laughter coming from the living room.

Trixie was sitting on Gina's shoulders, waving the Barbie doll in the air.

"Go, Mommy! Run! The evil witch is coming for us!" Trixie squealed.

Liam stood nearby with a plate of fruit, smiling. "Careful, you two. Don't fall."

Sunlight poured over the three of them, and the whole scene looked painfully warm and happy.

I stood in the shadows, feeling like I didn't belong in my own home.

Trixie noticed me first, and her smile vanished. She slid off Gina's shoulders and hid the Barbie doll behind her back.

She had done it without even thinking.

Trixie was afraid of me.

"Good morning, Dad." Her voice was timid.

Gina's smile faded too, and she rubbed her neck. "You're up? There's food on the stove. Heat it up yourself."

Liam walked over and held a peeled grape to Trixie's mouth. "Come on, Trixie. Have some fruit."

Trixie opened her mouth and happily ate it.

I walked over. "Trixie, you haven't brushed your teeth yet, and you're already eating something sweet?"

Trixie stopped chewing and looked to Liam for help.

Liam immediately stepped in. "Jordan, it's the weekend, so let Trixie have some fun. Besides, grapes have vitamin C. They're good for her."

"Exactly. It's too early in the morning for this." Gina backed him up. "Look at how good Liam is with her. Trixie's closer to him than she is to you."

I quietly watched the two of them back each other up.

Then I said, "Liam, since you're so good with Trixie, why don't you start taking her to her classes and helping her with her homework?"

Liam froze for a moment, then lowered his head. "I… I'm not very well educated, so I'm afraid I might end up teaching Trixie the wrong things. But I can handle everything else and make things easier for you."

"Everything else?" I sneered. "You mean teaching Trixie to lie to me?"

The room went silent.

Gina shot to her feet. "Jordan Glasby! What the hell is wrong with you? What do you mean he taught her to lie?"

I looked at Trixie, whose eyes darted around nervously. "Trixie, where did you get that Barbie doll?"

Trixie flinched and instinctively straightened her back.

She looked to Liam for help again.

Liam didn't look at her. He kept arranging the fruit, but I caught the slight curl of his lips and the quick glance to his right.

He was giving Trixie a signal.

Trixie quickly looked away and blurted out, "I borrowed it from Michelle at preschool!"

"Borrowed?" I stared at her. "Michelle wasn't at preschool yesterday. She was home sick, so how did you borrow it?"

Her lie fell apart instantly.

Trixie panicked and burst into tears. "You're always yelling at me! Uncle Liam was right. You just don't want me to have any fun! You're a bad dad!"

She called me a bad dad.

Those words hit me hard.

Liam immediately put down the plate of fruit and rushed over to hold Trixie, gently patting her back.

"Hey, don't cry. Your dad didn't mean it like that. Jordan, come on. She only lied because she was afraid you'd yell at her. Did you really have to grill her like that?"

As he spoke, he looked at me with a mix of annoyance and helplessness, as if I was being unreasonable.

Gina was even angrier. She pointed straight at me and shouted, "Jordan, just look at yourself! Are you losing your mind? It's still early in the morning, and you're already turning this place upside down. Do you have any love left for this family?"

Instead of getting worked up, I laughed. "Gina, Trixie lied. Instead of teaching her right from wrong, you're blaming me for finding out the truth? Is that what you call love?"

"Enough!" Gina waved me off impatiently. "Leave your work attitude at the office. Don't bring it into this home. Liam, take Trixie to wash her face. Just ignore this nutcase!"

Just then, Trixie heard the commotion and ran out of the apartment with her new toy in her arms. When she saw the police holding Liam down, she burst into tears and ran over to him, clinging to his leg."Daddy! Don't take my daddy!"Everyone went silent. The officer's expression hardened as he looked at Gina.Gina went pale. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed to the floor. The gold bars scattered across the floor no longer looked like a fortune. They only exposed how foolish she had been.In the interrogation room, Gina was still trying to save herself.I watched her sob through the one-way glass and felt nothing.Lana stood beside me, holding the thick stack of evidence."Jordan, you really backed them into a corner. Theft between spouses can be hard to prosecute, but with an outsider like Liam involved, this becomes a joint crime. And…"Lana pointed at Gina on the screen. "She'll do anything to shift the blame onto Liam and get a lighter sentence."Sure enough, Gina's h

"You can call the police now. Oh, and bring the private investigator too. I want Gina and Liam caught in the act," I said. There was a brief pause on the other end of the line before Lana gave a quiet laugh. "Jordan, you're really scary. But well done."I hung up, closed my laptop, and got up to change.I chose a black suit that looked solemn and severe. I looked ready for a funeral. And I was.I was going to bury my dead marriage and those two idiots who had no idea what was coming. Before I left, I checked the time. It was 3:00 pm.It was just before the banks closed, and pawn shops were still open.Gina and Liam's good days were over.…Lana, four police officers, and I met downstairs at the entrance to the building.Lana nodded at me and held up her tablet. "Call the police?" Nancy scoffed and pulled a switchblade from her pocket, casually spinning it around her finger. "Go ahead. While you're at it, tell them what you and Liam are to each other. Is this apartment even in your name?"Gina immediately backed down. She was a government employee, and the last thing she wanted was a scandal that could damage her career. Also, if I found out some thug had broken into the apartment, Gina knew she'd be in serious trouble. She turned on Liam. The affection she had shown him earlier was gone. Now she looked at him with nothing but blame and disgust. "Liam, this is your mess. Deal with it!"Liam nervously walked over to Nancy and tried to pull her to her feet. "Let's talk outside. We shouldn't do this here.""We'll talk right here!" Nancy shoved him away. "Transfer ten thousand dollars to me right now, and I'll leave. Otherwise, I'll go to Gina's workplace and put up a banner saying she stole another woman's husband!""I don't have that mu

Gina didn't stop Trixie. Instead, she watched her with an eager look.Trixie hesitated and glanced at the photo of the two of us hanging on the wall.Liam immediately pulled out a new toy from behind his back. It was one Gina had always refused to buy because it was too expensive."Call me Daddy, and this is yours," Liam said.Trixie's eyes lit up.Without hesitation, she wrapped her arms around Liam's neck and called out clearly, "Daddy!""That's my good girl!" Liam kissed Trixie hard on the cheek.Gina laughed. "That's more like it. Liam is more of a father than Jordan ever was. Now this is a real family.""A real family."Watching from the screen, I felt deeply hurt by what I saw.I had worked myself to the bone to give Trixie the best education and life. In the end, a toy and a few sweet words meant more to her than I did.My daughter had accepted another man as her father for the sake of a toy.Gina, my wife, was scheming to take my money for some loser, even willing t

Gina and Liam both gasped.Gina's anger turned to panic. "Put up the apartment as collateral? Then where are we supposed to live?""We can rent a place or move back to your old house." I spoke like it was no big deal.Liam went pale and pulled Trixie closer without thinking, as if his easy life was about to disappear."How long will you be gone this time?" Liam asked cautiously."I should be gone for about a week. Take care of things at home while I'm gone, and try not to spend too much," I said.I closed my suitcase and picked up my bag. "I'm leaving now. The overnight flight is cheaper."Gina was still trying to process the news that we might go broke. She didn't even see me off and just waved impatiently. "Fine, go. Just hurry up and get the money."I walked out and closed the door behind me. As soon as it shut, I heard Gina complaining inside. "Just my luck! I married a man who only knows how to make money, and now even the money is gone. What's the point of staying marri

After I hung up, I looked out at the traffic below and smiled to myself. If Gina and Liam were so deeply in love and cared so little about money, I wanted to see how long that "true love" would last without it.That evening, I came home carrying an elegant cake box.Liam was sitting on the couch with a face mask on, watching a variety show. Gina sat beside him, peeling an orange for him.Liam's face lit up when he saw me. "Jordan, did you get the cake? I've been craving it all afternoon."I handed him the box. "Yeah. I got it from the bakery downtown. I waited in line for an hour."Liam took it happily, but his expression fell the moment he opened the box.Inside was a dry sponge cake, the cheap kind sold by the pound at a grocery market."What… what is this?" Liam asked.Gina leaned over to look and frowned. "Jordan, you did that on purpose, didn't you? Liam wanted the mousse from that fancy dessert shop, and you bought some cheap cake instead? What are you trying to do, piss
