Chapter 4

Author: Peachie 11
Liam carried Trixie to the bathroom. Just before the door closed, Trixie looked over his shoulder and stuck her tongue out at me.

There was no love for me in her eyes. She looked at me like she had won.

Lunch was a feast. There was baked salmon, garlic butter shrimp, and a pot of crab chowder.

It was all rich, filling food.

I couldn't eat a bite of it because I was allergic to seafood.

Gina knew that, and so did Liam.

"Oh dear!" Liam had barely sat down when he gasped and covered his mouth. "Jordan, I'm so sorry. I was so caught up with everything that I forgot about your seafood allergy. All this food…"

He looked guilt-ridden. "Why don't I make you something else? It'll only take a few minutes."

Gina took a bite of salmon and shrugged. "Why bother? Jordan, you're so fussy. Just pick out the salmon and shrimp. And can't you give the chowder a try? Liam spent ages making it. Don't be so ungrateful."

I looked at the bowl of chowder. It was thick and creamy, and it looked good enough to make anyone hungry.

I knew Liam loved seafood, and I had always hated the smell of it.

"No, thanks." I got up, went to the kitchen, and poured myself a glass of cold water.

Their laughter carried in from the dining room.

Liam wore disposable gloves as he peeled the shrimp and placed one on Trixie's plate. He peeled another and casually gave it to Gina, too.

"Try this. The shrimp are especially fresh today."

Gina ate it without even saying thank you, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

"You're such a good cook," she said. "Jordan can't even make scrambled eggs without nearly blowing up the kitchen."

"Jordan has bigger things to worry about. He doesn't have time to fuss over cooking." Liam smiled as he complimented me, but every word was meant to sting.

He continued, "Still, you've got it tough. You work hard to support the family and don't even get much care in return. Every woman wants someone who knows how to take care of her."

Gina sighed and reached for Liam's hand. She held it only for a second before letting go, but I saw it clearly.

The shirt Gina was wearing had cost me over a thousand dollars when I bought it during a business trip overseas last month.

Trixie went to an elite private preschool that cost 30 thousand dollars a year. I paid the tuition.

I had emptied my savings to make the down payment on this apartment, and I was still paying the mortgage.

And now, in the home I had sacrificed everything to protect, they were eating the food I had paid for, talking about me behind my back, and enjoying their little moment as a family.

I felt like an intruder who had wandered into someone else's home.

That was the very moment when I stopped caring about this family.

If they wanted to play happy family so badly, then I would give them exactly what they wanted.

But first, I would make sure they paid back everything they had taken from me with interest.

…

On Monday, I went to work as usual.

Gina thought I had backed down. Before she left, she even gave me an order with a smug smile. "Come home early tonight. Liam wants that cake from downtown. Pick one up on your way home."

I replied with a smile. "Sure."

As soon as I turned away, I put her on mute in all my messaging apps.

When I got to the office, I didn't call a meeting. The first thing I did was call in the CFO.

"Look into something for me. Pull up the transaction history for the authorized card I gave Gina. I want the past year's records."

Gina was a government employee with a modest salary, so I had always covered the household expenses to spare her the embarrassment.

But I didn't want to hurt her pride by simply giving her money, so I added her as an authorized user on my credit card with a 70-thousand-dollar limit.

I told her it was for household expenses, but I had never checked the expenditures.

Back then, I had always believed that married couples should trust each other.

Half an hour later, the CFO placed a thick stack of printed statements on my desk. There was something strange about his expression.

"Mr. Glasby, there's been quite a lot of activity on this card."

Just then, Trixie heard the commotion and ran out of the apartment with her new toy in her arms. When she saw the police holding Liam down, she burst into tears and ran over to him, clinging to his leg."Daddy! Don't take my daddy!"Everyone went silent. The officer's expression hardened as he looked at Gina.Gina went pale. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed to the floor. The gold bars scattered across the floor no longer looked like a fortune. They only exposed how foolish she had been.In the interrogation room, Gina was still trying to save herself.I watched her sob through the one-way glass and felt nothing.Lana stood beside me, holding the thick stack of evidence."Jordan, you really backed them into a corner. Theft between spouses can be hard to prosecute, but with an outsider like Liam involved, this becomes a joint crime. And…"Lana pointed at Gina on the screen. "She'll do anything to shift the blame onto Liam and get a lighter sentence."Sure enough, Gina's h

"You can call the police now. Oh, and bring the private investigator too. I want Gina and Liam caught in the act," I said. There was a brief pause on the other end of the line before Lana gave a quiet laugh. "Jordan, you're really scary. But well done."I hung up, closed my laptop, and got up to change.I chose a black suit that looked solemn and severe. I looked ready for a funeral. And I was.I was going to bury my dead marriage and those two idiots who had no idea what was coming. Before I left, I checked the time. It was 3:00 pm.It was just before the banks closed, and pawn shops were still open.Gina and Liam's good days were over.…Lana, four police officers, and I met downstairs at the entrance to the building.Lana nodded at me and held up her tablet. It was showing live security footage from my apartment. On the screen, Gina and Liam were carrying several bags of all sizes, sneakily making their way toward the door. The travel bag filled with my gold bars, diamo

"Call the police?" Nancy scoffed and pulled a switchblade from her pocket, casually spinning it around her finger. "Go ahead. While you're at it, tell them what you and Liam are to each other. Is this apartment even in your name?"Gina immediately backed down. She was a government employee, and the last thing she wanted was a scandal that could damage her career. Also, if I found out some thug had broken into the apartment, Gina knew she'd be in serious trouble. She turned on Liam. The affection she had shown him earlier was gone. Now she looked at him with nothing but blame and disgust. "Liam, this is your mess. Deal with it!"Liam nervously walked over to Nancy and tried to pull her to her feet. "Let's talk outside. We shouldn't do this here.""We'll talk right here!" Nancy shoved him away. "Transfer ten thousand dollars to me right now, and I'll leave. Otherwise, I'll go to Gina's workplace and put up a banner saying she stole another woman's husband!""I don't have that mu

Gina didn't stop Trixie. Instead, she watched her with an eager look.Trixie hesitated and glanced at the photo of the two of us hanging on the wall.Liam immediately pulled out a new toy from behind his back. It was one Gina had always refused to buy because it was too expensive."Call me Daddy, and this is yours," Liam said.Trixie's eyes lit up.Without hesitation, she wrapped her arms around Liam's neck and called out clearly, "Daddy!""That's my good girl!" Liam kissed Trixie hard on the cheek.Gina laughed. "That's more like it. Liam is more of a father than Jordan ever was. Now this is a real family.""A real family."Watching from the screen, I felt deeply hurt by what I saw.I had worked myself to the bone to give Trixie the best education and life. In the end, a toy and a few sweet words meant more to her than I did.My daughter had accepted another man as her father for the sake of a toy.Gina, my wife, was scheming to take my money for some loser, even willing t

Gina and Liam both gasped.Gina's anger turned to panic. "Put up the apartment as collateral? Then where are we supposed to live?""We can rent a place or move back to your old house." I spoke like it was no big deal.Liam went pale and pulled Trixie closer without thinking, as if his easy life was about to disappear."How long will you be gone this time?" Liam asked cautiously."I should be gone for about a week. Take care of things at home while I'm gone, and try not to spend too much," I said.I closed my suitcase and picked up my bag. "I'm leaving now. The overnight flight is cheaper."Gina was still trying to process the news that we might go broke. She didn't even see me off and just waved impatiently. "Fine, go. Just hurry up and get the money."I walked out and closed the door behind me. As soon as it shut, I heard Gina complaining inside. "Just my luck! I married a man who only knows how to make money, and now even the money is gone. What's the point of staying marri

After I hung up, I looked out at the traffic below and smiled to myself. If Gina and Liam were so deeply in love and cared so little about money, I wanted to see how long that "true love" would last without it.That evening, I came home carrying an elegant cake box.Liam was sitting on the couch with a face mask on, watching a variety show. Gina sat beside him, peeling an orange for him.Liam's face lit up when he saw me. "Jordan, did you get the cake? I've been craving it all afternoon."I handed him the box. "Yeah. I got it from the bakery downtown. I waited in line for an hour."Liam took it happily, but his expression fell the moment he opened the box.Inside was a dry sponge cake, the cheap kind sold by the pound at a grocery market."What… what is this?" Liam asked.Gina leaned over to look and frowned. "Jordan, you did that on purpose, didn't you? Liam wanted the mousse from that fancy dessert shop, and you bought some cheap cake instead? What are you trying to do, piss
