Chapter 2

Penulis: Anonymous
My soul was trapped at Monique's side. I had no choice but to follow her home. Just as she reached the door, someone blocked her path.

It was the director of the orphanage where I'd grown up, Pauline Kinsley. Her eyes were red and swollen, her face twisted as she stared at Monique like she was ready to tear her apart.

"Monique, do you know Scott jumped off a building?"

Monique paused mid-step and said dismissively, "Yeah".

Ms. Kinsley stepped forward and grabbed Monique by the collar, shouting furiously, "It was you! You drove your husband to his death! Why aren't you upset? You lost your memory, not your mind!"

Monique laughed coldly and shoved Ms. Kinsley hard to the ground.

"Ms. Kinsley, you've lost it just like Scott. I haven't even blamed you for tricking me into that marriage, and now you're calling me heartless?"

"Why would I ever marry some orphan? You people just wanted my money. I've finally come to my senses.

"Thank God I lost my memory and got rid of that baby early. At least now, you can't bleed me dry."

I stood there, stunned. This was what Monique had thought of me all along after losing her memory. No wonder every time I tried to explain, she just looked at me with contempt.

Ms. Kinsley shakily got to her feet and slowly held up a man's ring.

"Mon, I don't care what you think of me, but the dead can't come back. Go see Scott one last time. If you don't, you'll regret it when your memory returns."

Monique snatched the ring and examined it carefully, but her voice cut like a blade straight through the chest.

"You're really willing to go all out for money, aren't you? Regret? Scott's dead? He was always so dramatic about dying. If he had the guts, he should've done it right in front of me!"

Ms. Kinsley's hand trembled with rage as she struck Monique across the face, her lips quivering as she said, "How can you be this heartless? Scott gave up his chance to study abroad for you. He drank until he vomited blood just to pay off your gambling debts.

"What have you ever done for him? You cheated on him! You aborted his child and sent him the remains. Now, Scott's dead, and you won't even see him one last time. How cruel can you be?"

Monique tossed her hair back and lifted her chin with a cold laugh. "Who knows if you're making this all up? I don't remember any of it, so as far as I'm concerned, it never happened.

"Why would I give birth to a child when I don't even know who the father is? Scott must've taken advantage of me when I was vulnerable and tricked me into getting pregnant.

"Consider that slap payment enough. Tell Scott I'm marrying Connor now. He should stop clinging to me and just sign the divorce papers already. Enough with the dramatics."

I thought that once you died, your heart couldn't hurt anymore. But Monique's words cut straight through me, and I couldn't help but hate my former self for being willing to sacrifice everything for her.

I felt like a complete joke. I couldn't help but laugh bitterly at the sky. Monique was utterly ruthless.

Hearing those words, Ms. Kinsley swayed on her feet but forced herself to turn around and slowly straighten her back. "Fine. Monique, you're not Scott's wife anymore. You'd better pray you never get your memory back."

Watching Ms. Kinsley walk away, step by heavy step, endless sorrow washed over me. My choice had cost the elderly Ms. Kinsley the unbearable pain of outliving someone she'd raised.

I wanted to follow her, but I was pulled along as Monique walked into the house. On the dining table sat the candlelit dinner I'd prepared. The metallic scent of the steak still lingered in the air.

Monique's brow furrowed as she scrolled through her phone's call log. She hesitated, then dialed a number. No one answered.

She must have remembered that I'd called her right before I died.

That day, reporters across the city covered the same scene."The bride runs three red lights in pursuit of a small van."Everyone was imagining all kinds of dramatic storylines. So, Connor moved up their marriage registration, which had originally been planned for after the wedding. They were legally married now.Right before going on stage for the vows, Monique dialed my number again. This time, she got a stranger's response.Monique asked her bridesmaid, "Do you know my ex-husband, Scott?""Mon, don't lose it on me. What ex-husband? Who's Scott?"Then, someone pushed her onto the stage. I applauded her from the void, wishing her and Connor a future full of disasters. When the officiant announced the exchange of rings, Monique bit her lip and asked Connor, "Connor, do you remember Scott?"Connor's face showed irritation as he forcefully slid the ring onto her finger. "Are you trying to cheat on

The doctor said Monique had suffered a shock and might experience mental instability. Even after she finished her IV, Connor hadn't said a word. His coldness made Monique so nervous she tugged at his sleeve.Ms. Kinsley arrived dressed entirely in black, drawing frequent glances from the nurses. When Monique saw her, all color drained from her face. She quickly pulled the blanket over her head.A flash of mockery crossed Ms. Kinsley's face, her voice cold when she asked, "Monique, what's with the theatrics?"I felt a warmth in my chest. Ms. Kinsley was standing up for me.Monique peeked out and asked quietly, "Ms. Kinsley, I saw Scott today. Is he still alive?"Hearing my name, Connor dropped the apple he'd been peeling and yanked the blanket off the bed. Monique's body went rigid with fear, but he still forced her upright."Monique, how long are you going to keep thinking about him? Remember—you're my fiancee."We're getting married in three days. Can you please snap out of it?

Monique didn't realize Connor had stood there all night, watching her crawl through the grass without a care for her appearance. His gaze was dark, the fury in his eyes seemingly ready to burn a hole through her.I couldn't help but feel a bit satisfied. I'd once watched Monique get drunk over him too. Now, he could have a taste of the pain I'd endured. With a cry of delight, Monique found the ring. She jumped up excitedly, laughing like a child. But my heart didn't stir in the slightest.I was still a man with self-respect. When love was gone, it was time to move on.…The events of that night created a strange tension between them. It was so obvious that even the bridal shop staff could feel something was off.The lighting technician muttered under his breath, "If they hadn't specifically come here for wedding photos, I'd think they were being tortured."I keep telling them to get closer, but the guy's stiff, and the woman's even stiffer. Monique stumbled down the steps, reaching out to touch the urn. Watching her look so dazed, I applauded Ms. Kinsley. The strange thing was, I felt no connection to that box whatsoever.Ms. Kinsley dodged, and Monique fell to the ground."I don't believe you! That's not Scott. You're lying!"Monique's eyes were red as she scrambled up and lunged at Ms. Kinsley. They both crashed heavily to the ground.Caught off guard, the urn hit the pavement, and some of its contents spilled out. When I looked closer, I realized it wasn't ashes. It was just sand.Monique laughed breathlessly and let go of Ms. Kinsley. "What do you have to say now? Where is Scott, really?"Ms. Kinsley picked up the empty urn, her face expressionless. "Scott is dead. You tortured him when he was alive. I won't let you off easy now that he's gone."Today is the day Scott's body is being cremated. If you have any conscience left, come with me and pay your respects to him."I felt grateful to Ms. Kinsley, and I was
