Jade

“Her name’s Hazel. She’s so sweet and good-mannered. Painfully shy too.” I sighed into my glass of strawberry rosé spritz, the bespoke birthday cocktail specially curated for tonight. “She’s going to be really good company, I can feel it. Anything beats being alone all day, right?”

Bells ignored my attempt at making a lame joke of my pitiful living situation. “And Julian didn’t bother telling you about her before she showed up?” she asked for confirmation since I’d mentioned it before.

“Nope. I tried calling him later about it but he never answered. He must have been busy.”

She snorted and I heard her mutter ‘what a dick’ under her breath before she took a sip of her Peach Bellini mocktail.

“If it isn’t the now fully legal birthday girl looking hotter than sin itself.” Someone whistled low from behind us.

I spun around from where I was leaning against the open bar at the familiar voice and lit up at the sight of one of my oldest friends, Harry Bellinger.

“Oh my God, you came!” I squealed before throwing my arms around him in excitement.

“Yeah, I did.” He gripped me tight, hands snaking around my waist to pull me closer. “Traffic sucked sweaty balls out there but here I am.”

“Happy birthday Jade ‘born-to-be-a-star’ Starling,” he said with a wide smile when I disentangled myself from him, extending his hand holding a pink gift bag between us. “Here you go. A special present for my special girl.”

Bells smacked his arm at his flirty words, directing a pointed glance at my very conspicuous engagement ring. “She’s someone else’s special girl now.”

“Fuck, that’s true. Didn’t even get you an engagement gift. My bad, gonna make it up to you soon. Where’s the lucky guy anyway?” He looked around the private dining room that currently held around thirty people, eyes searching.

Most of them were my friends from school, others acquaintances I had made through my parents who I could tolerate. They had broken into the ‘happy birthday’ song when I walked in with Bells, beaming faces encouraging me to blow out the candles on my strawberry cake and make a wish.

I had of course wished Julian loved me back. Then we danced and took pictures to post on social media, laughing and gossiping and munching on petite desserts.

All of it felt intimate and perfect, my dream birthday celebration except without my dream man.

There was a polaroid station, champagne tower, and soft speakers playing instrumental covers of popular songs. Everything I loved. No one knew me as much as Bells did and I loved her for it.

“The lucky guy?” I said with disbelief in response to Harry’s odd statement. “Tell me you don’t know I got engaged to Julian Davenport. The Julian Davenport.”

“So?” he scoffed, not looking impressed in the slightest. “He’s still the lucky one. He has no idea what an amazing woman he had snagged for himself. Fortunate bastard.”

I exchanged a subtle glance with Bells. She had always told me he had a crush on me right from our university days when she met him, but I had never seemed to believe it. He was just overly flirty with every girl he came across and I wasn’t an exception. I also wasn’t the type to read signals where there were none and complicate things for myself.

Besides, I had only ever had my heart set on Julian. Only ever saved myself for him. So every other guy never so much as breached my radar.

The thing was just that, Bells was rarely ever wrong about stuff like that.

And now I was having my suspicions too.

“Where’s he then? Shouldn’t he be glued to your side growling at anyone of the opposite gender who so much as looks your way?”

Bells made a face of disgust. “That’s a bit too caveman. Even for you.”

Harry ignored her, looking at me for a response.

JulianI had a fucking splitting headache.Rubbing my temple, I barely glanced at the folder Evans, my acquisitions director, slid my way while I read through the latest reports on my computer screen.“The investors on the Harbor Point project are saying they want another look at the expected returns.”“Why’s that?” I inquired sharply. “I thought this deal was already in the bag. I personally met with them last week.”“Yeah, about that… someone else has shown interest," he hesitated. “Montgomery Group. Seems like they’re now aware of how much of a goldmine this new development could be.”That finally got my attention and I leaned back in my chair to drill a hard stare into him.“How much did they offer?”“Five hundred and eight million. Which puts them at a mere twelve million behind us. They’re obviously willing to start a bidding war.”A muscle jumped in my jaw, a fresh wave of tension tightening my limbs.Maxwell fucking Montgomery, my biggest business rival.I should have expected

JadeBells grabbed her suitcase handle and cocked her head. “Hmm, it depends on what kind of curse to really get my attention, you know.”Shrugging, I leaned nonchalantly against the car to count off my fingers. “You take your pick: bad hair day, skin rash, nasty cold from hell, broken Jimmy Choo heel…”She gasped and clutched her chest. “How dare you. You know how much I adore my Jimmy Choos.”“Then you know how serious I am. Capisce?”“Capisce, ma’am,” she responded with a salute, causing a laugh to bubble out of me.“At ease, soldier. You’re dismissed.”She pulled me into a hug before whispering into my ear, “Tell Julian I’m going to fly over here and skin him balls first if he ever fucking makes you sad or hurt or cry again, you hear me?”“Loud and clear.”She released me then squeezed one of my boobs with a cheeky wink. “Love ya, babe. Leaving now. Drive safe.”I echoed back her first words and watched her head towards the check-in counters before turning away and climbing back i

JadeBells was leaving today. It was the worst news I woke up to this morning and now I was driving to her hotel to pick her up and drop her off at the airport myself, so I could squeeze in a few more moments with her.“Jades, really?” she exclaimed in disbelief when she walked out of her hotel building with a bellhop behind her, eyeing my gleaming white Range Rover parked by the curb—a college graduation gift from my parents. “You’re going to get us into an accident.”I pushed up my oversized aviator sunglasses with a huff of indignation while rounding the car towards her. “Just because I failed my driver’s test twice in a row doesn’t mean I’m that terrible of a driver. I’m here in one piece, aren’t I?”“Calling an Uber is the only sensible option here,” she countered. “I know I have to pay for leaving so abruptly one way or another but does it have to be with my life?”I ignored her and nodded with a smile towards the bellhop to start loading up her luggage. She had no choice but to

Jade“I think that’s our decision to make, Mrs. Starling.” Julian smoothly stepped in now, answering on my behalf and effectively drying up her endless well of questions I was sure she still had in store for me.“Yes, of course,” she immediately relented, smiling her fake veneer smile. “I suppose you’re right.”“That’s reasonable, since you’re both still getting married eventually.” My dad nodded thoughtfully, trying to take over from her before she overcompensated. “What difference does it make whether it’s today or next year?”“Exactly.” I smiled at him in silent appreciation.“I guess we’re waiting for the lovebirds to call the shots then.” Richard announced with an obvious undertone of amusement, glancing at his wife for her input.“So it seems.” Celeste finally sighed then lifted her slim shoulders in a conceding shrug. “I don’t mind much though. As long as you already have a ring on your finger, I can wait.”“Thank you,” I said in a heartfelt tone, breathing easier now as I look

JadeThe soft clinking of cutlery against fine china filled the Davenports’ dining room.Julian was seated beside me, with my parents opposite us and Julian’s at the head of the table. They were making small talk about business amongst themselves while I was trying my best to seem normal, and not at all like my insides were churning like butter. We were pretending tonight. Julian had told me so moments before we stepped out of the car in front of his parents' house half an hour ago. That was why he was paying me more attention than usual; brushing off food crumbs from the corner of my mouth, smiling and talking to me in hushed intimate murmurs, filling up my wine glass without me having to ask.Celeste hadn’t stopped glancing our way with eyes of overflowing happiness.I too couldn’t help myself from getting carried away a little, even though I knew it was all an act.My mind wandered, imagining a time in the very near future when his affection towards me wouldn’t be fake. It would be

JadeBells waved, waited for him to disappear around the corner, before turning to me.“You know it wouldn’t be cheating if you had given out your number.”“Well, I wasn’t interested.”She tapped her chin with one long red nail then hummed. “Now that I think about it, you’ve never been interested. Never ever.”I sighed, aware she was talking about our university days and the numerous parties we attended. I had always been hit on, plenty of times in fact, but I never gave in to anyone.Rumors went around that I was either asexual or a giant prude. Only Bells and a few other close friends knew I was waiting to get engaged to Julian.“I can understand those times,” she continued. “Julian was like a god who could do no wrong in your heart compared to our silly mates who could never keep it in their pants. But now that you’re finally with him and he isn’t treating you the way you deserve to be treated, why are you still stubbornly remaining loyal to him?”I sucked on my straw as I went thr
