Jade

It was twenty minutes to midnight when Bells made the call.

I was already slumped against the bar, drunk out of my mind and babbling nonsense to myself.

Bells had cleared out most of the room already much to their disappointment but a few people still lingered.

My ears perked up when I heard the line connect.

Huh, so he could pick up other people’s calls but not mine? Bloody bastard.

“Hi. This is Isabella, Jade’s best friend.” She made sure to slur some of her words and I held up a wobbly thumbs up in her direction, grinning like a loon.

“Yes. She’s passed out from having one drink too many and I also won’t be able to drive her back home since I’m not completely sober myself.” A pause, and I strained to hear his response but couldn’t since she hadn’t put it on speaker. I suspected she didn’t want me to hear when he inevitably refused her.

“An Uber?” she continued innocently. “Yes, I can order one but Jade asked for you specifically. She’s really in a bad state and I’m scared we might get taken advantage of.”

Oh, my best friend was good. She had even thrown in a slight tremor to her voice, nailing the damsel in distress act perfectly.

Another pause. Then, “We can wait. It’s not like we’re two unprotected girls or anything who can easily get preyed upon since we aren’t in complete control of our faculties.”

She listened for a bit with a roll of her eyes before she was abruptly lighting up. “Oh really? Great! I’d send the address now.”

I jerked up at her hopeful tone, strands of hair from my ponytail haphazardly falling into my face. I waited till she hung up before asking with my breath held, “Did he really agree to come?”

“He did. I’m not sure if I was just really convincing or I caught him in an unusually nice mood.”

“Oh my God, oh my God, he’s coming!” I bounced on my stool, stuck between nervousness and excitement.

“Calm your tits, woman.” She cautioned with a hand on my shoulder holding me still. “There are still a few people around.” She looked back at her phone. “Already sent him the address.”

“Now what?” I asked.

“Now we wait.”

I pursed my lips in annoyance before reaching for an abandoned shot glass that still contained a little tequila. Bells smacked my hand off just as it made contact.

“Don’t even try it,” she warned.

I rubbed the area she had hit with a pout. “Fuck, you hit me hard. I’m going to get a bruise.”

“Don’t worry. Julian will kiss it better.”

I put up my elbow on the marble countertop and rested my cheek against my open palm with a dreamy sigh, staring into the distance. “I hope he does.”

My eyes got all heavy-lidded and before I knew it, I was dozing off in that position.

JulianI had a fucking splitting headache.Rubbing my temple, I barely glanced at the folder Evans, my acquisitions director, slid my way while I read through the latest reports on my computer screen.“The investors on the Harbor Point project are saying they want another look at the expected returns.”“Why’s that?” I inquired sharply. “I thought this deal was already in the bag. I personally met with them last week.”“Yeah, about that… someone else has shown interest," he hesitated. “Montgomery Group. Seems like they’re now aware of how much of a goldmine this new development could be.”That finally got my attention and I leaned back in my chair to drill a hard stare into him.“How much did they offer?”“Five hundred and eight million. Which puts them at a mere twelve million behind us. They’re obviously willing to start a bidding war.”A muscle jumped in my jaw, a fresh wave of tension tightening my limbs.Maxwell fucking Montgomery, my biggest business rival.I should have expected

JadeBells grabbed her suitcase handle and cocked her head. “Hmm, it depends on what kind of curse to really get my attention, you know.”Shrugging, I leaned nonchalantly against the car to count off my fingers. “You take your pick: bad hair day, skin rash, nasty cold from hell, broken Jimmy Choo heel…”She gasped and clutched her chest. “How dare you. You know how much I adore my Jimmy Choos.”“Then you know how serious I am. Capisce?”“Capisce, ma’am,” she responded with a salute, causing a laugh to bubble out of me.“At ease, soldier. You’re dismissed.”She pulled me into a hug before whispering into my ear, “Tell Julian I’m going to fly over here and skin him balls first if he ever fucking makes you sad or hurt or cry again, you hear me?”“Loud and clear.”She released me then squeezed one of my boobs with a cheeky wink. “Love ya, babe. Leaving now. Drive safe.”I echoed back her first words and watched her head towards the check-in counters before turning away and climbing back i

JadeBells was leaving today. It was the worst news I woke up to this morning and now I was driving to her hotel to pick her up and drop her off at the airport myself, so I could squeeze in a few more moments with her.“Jades, really?” she exclaimed in disbelief when she walked out of her hotel building with a bellhop behind her, eyeing my gleaming white Range Rover parked by the curb—a college graduation gift from my parents. “You’re going to get us into an accident.”I pushed up my oversized aviator sunglasses with a huff of indignation while rounding the car towards her. “Just because I failed my driver’s test twice in a row doesn’t mean I’m that terrible of a driver. I’m here in one piece, aren’t I?”“Calling an Uber is the only sensible option here,” she countered. “I know I have to pay for leaving so abruptly one way or another but does it have to be with my life?”I ignored her and nodded with a smile towards the bellhop to start loading up her luggage. She had no choice but to

Jade“I think that’s our decision to make, Mrs. Starling.” Julian smoothly stepped in now, answering on my behalf and effectively drying up her endless well of questions I was sure she still had in store for me.“Yes, of course,” she immediately relented, smiling her fake veneer smile. “I suppose you’re right.”“That’s reasonable, since you’re both still getting married eventually.” My dad nodded thoughtfully, trying to take over from her before she overcompensated. “What difference does it make whether it’s today or next year?”“Exactly.” I smiled at him in silent appreciation.“I guess we’re waiting for the lovebirds to call the shots then.” Richard announced with an obvious undertone of amusement, glancing at his wife for her input.“So it seems.” Celeste finally sighed then lifted her slim shoulders in a conceding shrug. “I don’t mind much though. As long as you already have a ring on your finger, I can wait.”“Thank you,” I said in a heartfelt tone, breathing easier now as I look

JadeThe soft clinking of cutlery against fine china filled the Davenports’ dining room.Julian was seated beside me, with my parents opposite us and Julian’s at the head of the table. They were making small talk about business amongst themselves while I was trying my best to seem normal, and not at all like my insides were churning like butter. We were pretending tonight. Julian had told me so moments before we stepped out of the car in front of his parents' house half an hour ago. That was why he was paying me more attention than usual; brushing off food crumbs from the corner of my mouth, smiling and talking to me in hushed intimate murmurs, filling up my wine glass without me having to ask.Celeste hadn’t stopped glancing our way with eyes of overflowing happiness.I too couldn’t help myself from getting carried away a little, even though I knew it was all an act.My mind wandered, imagining a time in the very near future when his affection towards me wouldn’t be fake. It would be

JadeBells waved, waited for him to disappear around the corner, before turning to me.“You know it wouldn’t be cheating if you had given out your number.”“Well, I wasn’t interested.”She tapped her chin with one long red nail then hummed. “Now that I think about it, you’ve never been interested. Never ever.”I sighed, aware she was talking about our university days and the numerous parties we attended. I had always been hit on, plenty of times in fact, but I never gave in to anyone.Rumors went around that I was either asexual or a giant prude. Only Bells and a few other close friends knew I was waiting to get engaged to Julian.“I can understand those times,” she continued. “Julian was like a god who could do no wrong in your heart compared to our silly mates who could never keep it in their pants. But now that you’re finally with him and he isn’t treating you the way you deserve to be treated, why are you still stubbornly remaining loyal to him?”I sucked on my straw as I went thr
