Jade

Just the sound of his approaching footsteps made cold sweat slide down my spine.

I was in a seated wide angle straddle pose when he eventually emerged and casually flicked that stormy gaze of his in my direction.

Almost choking on my inhale, I immediately closed my parted legs and opened my mouth to greet him a good morning, but he turned on his heel and walked away towards the kitchen in the next second, giving me a view of his broad back clad in another perfectly tailored black suit.

I swallowed back the words then watched from my defeated perch on the ground as Hazel cheerily greeted him and he murmured back a response before accepting a mug of coffee from her.

He wasn’t friendly, but he wasn’t completely cold either. And his current expression wasn’t the stony one he had directed my way.

Just neutral. Impassive.

Well, I guess I could understand that on some level since Hazel hadn’t puked in his car or come all over his sheets.

Speaking of sheets…

I hopped to my feet and raced back upstairs towards his room, praying he hadn’t locked it.

He hadn’t, but his bed now had new pink sheets, the old ones not in the laundry basket or anywhere else I looked.

Great. He had probably gone to burn them in the middle of the night.

I groaned then facepalmed myself.

God, could I make his aversion towards me any worse?

Mumbling under my breath about the unfairness of life, I turned to leave, but pulled to a hard stop when I realized Julian had come into the room and was now standing about three feet away in front of me.

“J-Julian. Hi.” I rubbed my suddenly sweaty palms down my shorts. “I hope you had a splendid night’s res—”

He took a single step into my personal space and the move was effective in abruptly shutting me up.

His gray eyes glinted down at me, flinty and intimidating. “This is the last time you’ll step foot in this room or touch any of my things,” he said coldly, his tone sharp and powerful with a hint of contempt. “Could you be any more embarrassing? Trying to seduce me to get my attention. Is that the new low you’ve stooped to?”

I clenched my teeth hard against a wave of pathetic emotion as I lowered my gaze. “That—that isn’t…”

“I really am not interested in hearing your excuses. The only thing I’ve asked of you is to stay out of my way. Why the fuck is that so hard for you to do?”

“I wanted to apologize for throwing up in your car,” I said shakily, still not bringing myself to look at him or the floodgates would burst open. “I didn’t know you were going to… I’m sorry. I’m really sorry.”

I made a mistake—or mistakes. But couldn’t he hear how sincere and regretful I sounded?

Didn’t that move him the tiniest bit?

I ran past him before he could tell me to get out himself, tears already slipping down my cheeks.

I was disgusted with myself and how fragile my feelings were. But I couldn’t control them; not when the person hurting those feelings was someone I’d loved for most of my life.

And I couldn’t even completely blame him this time around so all I did was cry harder, curling up on my bed until I heard the front door open and close, signaling he was out of the house.

When I finally calmed down, I thought about what I could do to earn his forgiveness and get him to start paying attention to me the way I wanted.

Ideas flitted through my mind but I discarded every one of them until I couldn’t ignore the obvious answer any longer.

I needed to do what he had asked—stay out of his way.

I was trying too hard and it was only making him dislike me more.

Maybe, just maybe if I stopped caring so much, he would start seeing me in a different light and deem me worthy enough of his love and affection.

A girl could only hope.

JulianI had a fucking splitting headache.Rubbing my temple, I barely glanced at the folder Evans, my acquisitions director, slid my way while I read through the latest reports on my computer screen.“The investors on the Harbor Point project are saying they want another look at the expected returns.”“Why’s that?” I inquired sharply. “I thought this deal was already in the bag. I personally met with them last week.”“Yeah, about that… someone else has shown interest," he hesitated. “Montgomery Group. Seems like they’re now aware of how much of a goldmine this new development could be.”That finally got my attention and I leaned back in my chair to drill a hard stare into him.“How much did they offer?”“Five hundred and eight million. Which puts them at a mere twelve million behind us. They’re obviously willing to start a bidding war.”A muscle jumped in my jaw, a fresh wave of tension tightening my limbs.Maxwell fucking Montgomery, my biggest business rival.I should have expected

JadeBells grabbed her suitcase handle and cocked her head. “Hmm, it depends on what kind of curse to really get my attention, you know.”Shrugging, I leaned nonchalantly against the car to count off my fingers. “You take your pick: bad hair day, skin rash, nasty cold from hell, broken Jimmy Choo heel…”She gasped and clutched her chest. “How dare you. You know how much I adore my Jimmy Choos.”“Then you know how serious I am. Capisce?”“Capisce, ma’am,” she responded with a salute, causing a laugh to bubble out of me.“At ease, soldier. You’re dismissed.”She pulled me into a hug before whispering into my ear, “Tell Julian I’m going to fly over here and skin him balls first if he ever fucking makes you sad or hurt or cry again, you hear me?”“Loud and clear.”She released me then squeezed one of my boobs with a cheeky wink. “Love ya, babe. Leaving now. Drive safe.”I echoed back her first words and watched her head towards the check-in counters before turning away and climbing back i

JadeBells was leaving today. It was the worst news I woke up to this morning and now I was driving to her hotel to pick her up and drop her off at the airport myself, so I could squeeze in a few more moments with her.“Jades, really?” she exclaimed in disbelief when she walked out of her hotel building with a bellhop behind her, eyeing my gleaming white Range Rover parked by the curb—a college graduation gift from my parents. “You’re going to get us into an accident.”I pushed up my oversized aviator sunglasses with a huff of indignation while rounding the car towards her. “Just because I failed my driver’s test twice in a row doesn’t mean I’m that terrible of a driver. I’m here in one piece, aren’t I?”“Calling an Uber is the only sensible option here,” she countered. “I know I have to pay for leaving so abruptly one way or another but does it have to be with my life?”I ignored her and nodded with a smile towards the bellhop to start loading up her luggage. She had no choice but to

Jade“I think that’s our decision to make, Mrs. Starling.” Julian smoothly stepped in now, answering on my behalf and effectively drying up her endless well of questions I was sure she still had in store for me.“Yes, of course,” she immediately relented, smiling her fake veneer smile. “I suppose you’re right.”“That’s reasonable, since you’re both still getting married eventually.” My dad nodded thoughtfully, trying to take over from her before she overcompensated. “What difference does it make whether it’s today or next year?”“Exactly.” I smiled at him in silent appreciation.“I guess we’re waiting for the lovebirds to call the shots then.” Richard announced with an obvious undertone of amusement, glancing at his wife for her input.“So it seems.” Celeste finally sighed then lifted her slim shoulders in a conceding shrug. “I don’t mind much though. As long as you already have a ring on your finger, I can wait.”“Thank you,” I said in a heartfelt tone, breathing easier now as I look

JadeThe soft clinking of cutlery against fine china filled the Davenports’ dining room.Julian was seated beside me, with my parents opposite us and Julian’s at the head of the table. They were making small talk about business amongst themselves while I was trying my best to seem normal, and not at all like my insides were churning like butter. We were pretending tonight. Julian had told me so moments before we stepped out of the car in front of his parents' house half an hour ago. That was why he was paying me more attention than usual; brushing off food crumbs from the corner of my mouth, smiling and talking to me in hushed intimate murmurs, filling up my wine glass without me having to ask.Celeste hadn’t stopped glancing our way with eyes of overflowing happiness.I too couldn’t help myself from getting carried away a little, even though I knew it was all an act.My mind wandered, imagining a time in the very near future when his affection towards me wouldn’t be fake. It would be

JadeBells waved, waited for him to disappear around the corner, before turning to me.“You know it wouldn’t be cheating if you had given out your number.”“Well, I wasn’t interested.”She tapped her chin with one long red nail then hummed. “Now that I think about it, you’ve never been interested. Never ever.”I sighed, aware she was talking about our university days and the numerous parties we attended. I had always been hit on, plenty of times in fact, but I never gave in to anyone.Rumors went around that I was either asexual or a giant prude. Only Bells and a few other close friends knew I was waiting to get engaged to Julian.“I can understand those times,” she continued. “Julian was like a god who could do no wrong in your heart compared to our silly mates who could never keep it in their pants. But now that you’re finally with him and he isn’t treating you the way you deserve to be treated, why are you still stubbornly remaining loyal to him?”I sucked on my straw as I went thr
