“I hate seeing you like this.” Bells said while we were seated on the outdoor patio of a bakery café a couple streets down from my neighborhood.

“Like what?” I acted clueless, taking a small sip of my peach iced tea.

“Faking it in front of me. A complete stranger could clock the sadness in your eyes from a mile away.”

“That sucks then.” I shrugged. “Thought I was a better actress.”

“You also ordered a giant chocolate chip cookie. Your sweet tooth tends to get out of hand when you’re trying to comfort yourself.”

“Ugh.” I dropped the crumb I was nibbling on and ground the heels of my palms into my eye sockets. “I really don’t wanna cry in public, Bells. So could we talk about something else, please?”

She scoffed and looked away, simmering in annoyance on my behalf.

I on the other hand picked up my piece of cookie and kept nibbling, content to just sit in silence and distract myself with watching people stroll past and cars weave through the steady afternoon traffic.

I could have stayed cooped up in the house because Hazel wasn’t bad company, but I just needed to get out and clear my head and since she wasn’t interested in accompanying me, I had called Bells instead and here we both were now.

“Hello, ladies.”

I glanced up to see a nice-looking man smiling down at us. His face didn’t spark any ounce of recognition within me so I knew he was a stranger.

“Nice afternoon out, isn’t it?” he asked, trying to strike a casual conversation.

It was obvious he was a local, his strong accent giving that fact away.

Bells grinned at him, perking up for some reason. “It is.”

My attention was back on my cookie since I wasn’t in the mood for socializing but Bells’ nudge startled me into looking back up.

“I’m Felix.” The man introduced, his interested gaze focused squarely on me now. “I couldn’t help myself when I spotted you from across the road. You have to be a model.”

I scrunched my face. “Um… that’s flattering, but no. I’m not.”

“Wow. That’s shocking.” His reaction was dramatic. “You just have the kind of ethereal beauty that angels sing about.”

I blinked, my mind not catching up with his words quick enough.

He didn’t seem to mind as he continued, his smile kicking up more, “I would love to have your number, if that isn’t a hassle.”

Finally, it clicked in my head that he was flirting.

I immediately lifted my left hand, the huge diamond sparkling in the summer sun and making me wonder how he had missed it. “I’m engaged. So I’m going to have to turn you down.” I said gently, cringing on the inside a little.

“Oh.” He chuckled awkwardly. “Of course, I should have known you wouldn’t be single. It was worth a shot though.” He turned to acknowledge Bells then, already backing away. “Hope you both have a great day.”

JulianI had a fucking splitting headache.Rubbing my temple, I barely glanced at the folder Evans, my acquisitions director, slid my way while I read through the latest reports on my computer screen.“The investors on the Harbor Point project are saying they want another look at the expected returns.”“Why’s that?” I inquired sharply. “I thought this deal was already in the bag. I personally met with them last week.”“Yeah, about that… someone else has shown interest," he hesitated. “Montgomery Group. Seems like they’re now aware of how much of a goldmine this new development could be.”That finally got my attention and I leaned back in my chair to drill a hard stare into him.“How much did they offer?”“Five hundred and eight million. Which puts them at a mere twelve million behind us. They’re obviously willing to start a bidding war.”A muscle jumped in my jaw, a fresh wave of tension tightening my limbs.Maxwell fucking Montgomery, my biggest business rival.I should have expected

JadeBells grabbed her suitcase handle and cocked her head. “Hmm, it depends on what kind of curse to really get my attention, you know.”Shrugging, I leaned nonchalantly against the car to count off my fingers. “You take your pick: bad hair day, skin rash, nasty cold from hell, broken Jimmy Choo heel…”She gasped and clutched her chest. “How dare you. You know how much I adore my Jimmy Choos.”“Then you know how serious I am. Capisce?”“Capisce, ma’am,” she responded with a salute, causing a laugh to bubble out of me.“At ease, soldier. You’re dismissed.”She pulled me into a hug before whispering into my ear, “Tell Julian I’m going to fly over here and skin him balls first if he ever fucking makes you sad or hurt or cry again, you hear me?”“Loud and clear.”She released me then squeezed one of my boobs with a cheeky wink. “Love ya, babe. Leaving now. Drive safe.”I echoed back her first words and watched her head towards the check-in counters before turning away and climbing back i

JadeBells was leaving today. It was the worst news I woke up to this morning and now I was driving to her hotel to pick her up and drop her off at the airport myself, so I could squeeze in a few more moments with her.“Jades, really?” she exclaimed in disbelief when she walked out of her hotel building with a bellhop behind her, eyeing my gleaming white Range Rover parked by the curb—a college graduation gift from my parents. “You’re going to get us into an accident.”I pushed up my oversized aviator sunglasses with a huff of indignation while rounding the car towards her. “Just because I failed my driver’s test twice in a row doesn’t mean I’m that terrible of a driver. I’m here in one piece, aren’t I?”“Calling an Uber is the only sensible option here,” she countered. “I know I have to pay for leaving so abruptly one way or another but does it have to be with my life?”I ignored her and nodded with a smile towards the bellhop to start loading up her luggage. She had no choice but to

Jade“I think that’s our decision to make, Mrs. Starling.” Julian smoothly stepped in now, answering on my behalf and effectively drying up her endless well of questions I was sure she still had in store for me.“Yes, of course,” she immediately relented, smiling her fake veneer smile. “I suppose you’re right.”“That’s reasonable, since you’re both still getting married eventually.” My dad nodded thoughtfully, trying to take over from her before she overcompensated. “What difference does it make whether it’s today or next year?”“Exactly.” I smiled at him in silent appreciation.“I guess we’re waiting for the lovebirds to call the shots then.” Richard announced with an obvious undertone of amusement, glancing at his wife for her input.“So it seems.” Celeste finally sighed then lifted her slim shoulders in a conceding shrug. “I don’t mind much though. As long as you already have a ring on your finger, I can wait.”“Thank you,” I said in a heartfelt tone, breathing easier now as I look

JadeThe soft clinking of cutlery against fine china filled the Davenports’ dining room.Julian was seated beside me, with my parents opposite us and Julian’s at the head of the table. They were making small talk about business amongst themselves while I was trying my best to seem normal, and not at all like my insides were churning like butter. We were pretending tonight. Julian had told me so moments before we stepped out of the car in front of his parents' house half an hour ago. That was why he was paying me more attention than usual; brushing off food crumbs from the corner of my mouth, smiling and talking to me in hushed intimate murmurs, filling up my wine glass without me having to ask.Celeste hadn’t stopped glancing our way with eyes of overflowing happiness.I too couldn’t help myself from getting carried away a little, even though I knew it was all an act.My mind wandered, imagining a time in the very near future when his affection towards me wouldn’t be fake. It would be

JadeBells waved, waited for him to disappear around the corner, before turning to me.“You know it wouldn’t be cheating if you had given out your number.”“Well, I wasn’t interested.”She tapped her chin with one long red nail then hummed. “Now that I think about it, you’ve never been interested. Never ever.”I sighed, aware she was talking about our university days and the numerous parties we attended. I had always been hit on, plenty of times in fact, but I never gave in to anyone.Rumors went around that I was either asexual or a giant prude. Only Bells and a few other close friends knew I was waiting to get engaged to Julian.“I can understand those times,” she continued. “Julian was like a god who could do no wrong in your heart compared to our silly mates who could never keep it in their pants. But now that you’re finally with him and he isn’t treating you the way you deserve to be treated, why are you still stubbornly remaining loyal to him?”I sucked on my straw as I went thr
