Chapter 4

Author: Mohini
By the time I reached the prison gate, I was shaking all over, barely able to stay on my feet.

My cousin came rushing out to meet me.

"He's stable for now. There's a doctor treating him inside, but the real problem is that his mood's all over the place. If he gets hit with another five years on a false charge, I don't know if he can..."

Every drop of blood in my body went cold.

There was no time to find another lawyer. I swallowed my pride and called Vicky.

"My father's been framed again. You already know the whole case. Please, just represent him in court this once, I'm begging you..."

Her voice came back ice-cold.

"The second something goes wrong, you run to me for help. Didn't you say you could find a lawyer without me? And here I thought you'd finally learned to stand on your own. Guess not."

My fingers were trembling. I was practically pleading with her.

"Just this once. I'll owe you for it."

There was a long silence on the other end before she spoke again.

"It's not that I don't care. But what if your father really did embezzle that money? I can't afford him dragging us into it."

The call cut off.

The dial tone droning in my ear snuffed out the last bit of hope I had left.

I sank down onto the curb and started dialing, one number after another.

I called every law firm in the city.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Fletcher."

"We don't know enough about the case. Getting up to speed would take at least a week, and there's no way we'd be ready in time for the hearing."

Right as I was about to fall apart completely, a message from Vicky popped up on my phone.

[Send me your location. I'll come find you right now.]

I was overjoyed in an instant.

I sent my location and turned down every lawyer who'd reached out to help.

I kept praying, over and over, that the case would still go through.

Three hours passed. Vicky never showed.

I called twice. Both calls were rejected.

Then a message came through.

[Peaches bit Derek. I'm taking him to get his rabies shots. I can't make it right now.]

My mind went blank.

Another message followed right after.

[I'll send you a few good lawyers to look into. Reach out to them.]

A string of phone numbers came through, and then nothing more.

The blood in my veins turned to ice.

That was when word came from inside the prison.

"Mr. Fletcher suffered a sudden heart attack. He passed away despite our best efforts to save him. Please accept our condolences."

My father's aged face lay still under a white sheet.

The breath caught in my chest, and I dropped to my knees.

In that moment, the sobs I'd been holding back tore out of me all at once.

The one family I had left in the world was gone too.

I wiped my eyes, pulled out the divorce agreement Vicky had already signed, and added my own signature.

Then I blocked every way she had of reaching me.

It wasn't until Vicky was back at her office that she remembered her father-in-law's case.

She called her assistant in.

"Pull up my father-in-law's case file. I want to see if there's any way to get it overturned."

The assistant lowered her head, stammering.

"He couldn't handle the pressure of being falsely accused. The surgery to save him failed. He passed away."

Vicky shot to her feet.

"There's one more thing," the assistant said, holding out a surgical form. "This is something your husband left for you."

The moment she looked at it, the color drained from her face.

Vicky went quiet for a long moment."Is this because of your father's case?"Hearing her bring up my father again made me shake all over, and I couldn't stop."You don't get to talk about him."She let out a slow breath and looked at me with total seriousness."I really was slammed with work that day. I couldn't get to it in time. The second I finished up with Derek's rabies shots, I started looking into your father's case right away. I just didn't know he'd already..."My mind flashed back to that exact moment.Because of one text message from her, I'd turned away every lawyer who'd reached out to help.I'd decided to trust her one more time. Just once.Reality had slapped me across the face for it.Just thinking about it made my eyes sting."Stop putting on this act. Vicky, I don't need your excuses now. My father's already gone. It's too late for any of it. All I need is for you to disappear from my life. For good."The next second, Vicky grabbed my arm, her eyes shining

As I carried my father's ashes out of the prison, I felt my entire world going dark.I'd searched everywhere for a lawyer at the time and sworn I'd do whatever it took to get him out.Vicky had blocked every single one of them."Every lawyer you've found is someone I trained under. If any of them helped you, how am I supposed to keep my standing in this field? You need to think of me here. This is exactly the kind of situation where I have to avoid any appearance of a conflict."In the end, the case fell apart, and my father was sentenced to three years. Now he'd been framed again, and the daughter-in-law lawyer he'd always been so proud of wouldn't lift a finger for him.He was gone. I'd never ask Vicky for another thing again.I carried his ashes onto a plane and went back to our hometown.Plenty of people used to mock me for growing up without a mother, but my father had shouldered that role too, on top of his own. He'd worked himself to the bone just to give me a shot at a

"A lawyer? Why would my husband need a lawyer? Is this about his father's case?"The lawyer shook his head and said nothing.Vicky took the folder and tore it open. The words [Divorce Agreement] jumped out at her."Di... divorce?"She stood frozen where she was."That's right. Both your names are already signed on this agreement. It's already in effect."She flipped straight to the last page.Sure enough, her signature was right there. She recognized it immediately. It really was her own handwriting."How is this possible?"Her mind flashed back to the day of the hearing, when she'd signed a stack of documents without really looking at them. She'd been so happy that day that she'd glossed right over the contents of every single page."He's been planning to divorce me since then?"Her head spun. Before the lawyer left, he passed along one more message."Mr. Fletcher asked me to tell you that his father died because you stood by and did nothing. He said he won't hold that

[Brain Surgery Consent Form]The words hit her like a blow, and Vicky's breath caught in her throat."What? He was... hurt?"Her eyes shot to the surgery date. It was the same day she'd left Trey behind to take Derek to the hospital for his stomach flare-up.[Patient sustained severe head trauma resulting in significant blood loss, with possible nerve damage...]The dense block of medical text pulled her straight back to that day."I did this to him..."Vicky's hand shook as she dialled Trey's number. All she got back was a cold, mechanical voice.[The number you have dialed is currently unavailable. Please try again later...]She couldn't believe Trey would ignore her calls, so she sent a message instead.[Something this serious happened and you didn't tell me? Am I just furniture to you? Pick up the phone right now.]The second she hit send, she found I blocked her.Trey had blocked her."Fine." Her breathing turned unsteady. "If he wants to give me the silent treatment

I came to again in the hospital."Mr. Fletcher, thank goodness the cleaning lady found you and got you here. We stitched up the cut on your head. You need to rest."The doctor studied my chart, frowning deeply."One more thing," he said, lowering his voice."You need to be more careful from now on. If you'd gotten here even a little later, we might not be having this conversation."I gripped the edge of the blanket, my chest aching. The doctor asked, "Where's your wife? I have a few things I need to tell her."I shook my head and said nothing.I'd already called her three times. She'd turned her phone off long before that. That evening, I went home. The moment I stepped through the door, Peaches broke free of her leash and slammed into me.Derek clapped a hand over his mouth, looking startled."Trey, I'm really sorry. I was just training Peaches to guard the house. I didn't realize it was you coming in."Pain shot through me as I braced myself against the wall. The wound
