Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Joey Joe
Everett scooped up a hammer from the floor, glaring daggers at the guy with specs.

"Utter one more peep, and believe me, I'll crack your skull open."

The cabin went dead quiet, except for the guy's bitter, ragged breathing.

Annie peeked out from behind Everett, grinning like the cat that got the cream, and gave her haul of designer goodies an extra little flaunt.

She snuggled up to Everett and, as she breezed by me, murmured, "Thanks a bunch for hanging tight, Daniela."

I kept my mouth shut, my eyes fixed on the gun-toting goons charging our way.

As the cabin door slammed shut, a volley of gunshots rang out.

"The insurgents are coming!" someone shrieked.

The crowd's curses exploded all at once.

"Happy now, Everett?!"

The guy with glasses shot up, jabbing a finger at the insurgents closing in outside. "We're all gonna end up dead here because we waited for her!"

A mom clutching her kid started bawling, "My baby's only three... All because we waited for her to snatch up some makeup..."

Annie's eyes welled up, and she curled into Everett's arms, looking hurt.

"It wasn't on purpose. I just wanted to grab a few things to take home, for the kids at the orphanage..."

Everett wrapped his arms around Annie, his voice full of hurt as he said, "She's right. Annie's got a heart of gold. Why are you all ganging up on her?"

Panic had taken over the cabin. Some passengers were sobbing uncontrollably, while others were glued to their phones, sending desperate messages to loved ones.

The distant cries of the insurgents and the occasional crack of gunfire were getting louder by the second.

I surveyed the frightened faces and whispered, "The plane is a sitting duck. We need to make a break for the nearby bomb shelter."

The guy with the glasses piped up, "But the insurgents are swarming outside. How are we supposed to get out?"

I pointed to a hatch leading to a service tunnel under the boarding stairs. "This way leads to the ground crew's passage. There's a hidden path to the bomb shelter."

I swung the hatch open. "Stick with me, and keep it down."

The passengers shuffled out in a nervous line, except for Annie, who stood frozen, eyeing the grimy hatch with disgust. "Everett, I can't go down there. My skirt is brand new..."

Everett stepped up to her, all reassuring smiles. "No worries, Annie, I've got you. I'll carry you."

I shot them a look and did not wait for a response, leading the rest into the murky tunnel.

Zayden's cough echoed weakly behind me. "Ms. Larson, I don't think my old bones can take much more..."

"Don't talk like that, Mr. Lynch," I said, steadying him. "Your work is too important. I'll get you home safe and sound."

The tunnel was a damp, shadowy vein under the chaos, the insurgents' shouts a haunting backdrop.

We crept along, breaths held, until we reached the safety of the bomb shelter.

"Stay put. I've called in the cavalry," I assured them in a hush. "They'll be here in two hours."

Everyone collapsed in relief, finding spots to rest.

Just then, a wave of perfume hit us like a freight train.

"What in the world is that smell?" The guy with glasses looked around, alarmed.

There was Annie, spritzing Chanel like it was an air freshener. "Ugh, it reeks here. A little perfume never hurts anyone, right?"

Zayden's cough turned into a fit, his face going ghostly white. "Stop... Please stop... I'm allergic..."

I dashed to grab the perfume bottle, but I was too late.

Zayden was already gasping for air, his lips a frightening shade of blue.

"You fool!" The guy with glasses exploded in rage. "If anything happens to Mr. Lynch, you'll have the whole country on your back!"

"Watch out!"Andrew shoved me aside with all his might, but the blade found him instead, sinking into his stomach."Andrew!" I could only watch as he collapsed, Everett's twisted laughter bouncing off the walls."Now it's your sweetheart's turn to die. Happy now?"My hands shook as I reached for my gun, but before I could squeeze the trigger, Everett's boot sent it flying. He pinned my wrist to the ground and hissed in my ear, "No need to rush. We've got all the time in the world..."Out of nowhere, Andrew, who was supposed to be out cold, lunged and clung to Everett's leg!"Get out of here!"Furious, Everett drove his dagger into Andrew's back with a vicious thrust.Blood spurted wildly, yet Andrew clung on for dear life.I snatched the dropped gun and took aim at Everett's forehead."Game over."His face was a picture of shock as the shot rang out.Andrew collapsed into a crimson pool, giving me a feeble smile. "Did I do good this time? Did I protect you?"I dropped to

Andrew crouched and touched the blood, his eyes icy. "He's hurt. He won't get far."I looked at the photo and laughed. "Think you can frighten me, Everett?"I flicked my lighter, set the picture ablaze, and watched the flames dance in my reflection–icy, unyielding."This time around, you don't stand a chance."By the next day, the story was everywhere.[Jailbreak alert: Everett on the loose in the city, military on a citywide manhunt!]My phone buzzed with a text from a number I did not recognize.[Daniela. I'm going to be the one to send you to hell this time.]I could not help but smirk as I read the message.[Bring it on. I'm waiting.]That day, after my flight landed and I was about to head home, Andrew was waiting for me outside."Instructor, it's not safe to go back to your place tonight."He stood there, umbrella in hand, a worried look creasing his forehead. "Head to the dorms. They've got better security."I shook my head. "Hiding is only a temporary fix."He gra

Sunlight poured through the windows, warming the corridor. I squinted, breathing in the fresh air, feeling utterly refreshed.I had finally avenged this enormous grievance. The dust settled with the military court's decision: Everett got fifteen years, while Annie got eight. For me, it was the start of something new.…The airline bumped me up to the youngest-ever deputy head of the flight department, in charge of international flight safety training. At the ceremony, the CEO himself pinned the shoulder bars on me. "Ms. Larson," he said, "I'm counting on you to train a whole new generation of top-notch pilots."Post-ceremony, a reporter caught up to me, card in hand."Ms. Larson, how about an exclusive? Everyone's dying to hear the hero captain's tale."I was just about to reply when a crisp male voice jumped in. "Excuse me, Mr. Blake, looks like you've got a line forming."I spun around to see a young guy in a pilot-in-training getup snapping me a crisp salute."Andrew Cart

The interrogation room fell deadly quiet.Everett's head shot up, his eyes red and wild. "What did she say?"Annie's voice did not stop. "He had it all planned out! Said that with his fiancee as a pilot, we could get away with anything!""Lies!" Everett exploded, his shackles crashing against the metal table with a thunderous clang, "Annie, you liar! You were the one who wanted to use the chaos to our advantage..."The officer calmly hit the mute button, his gaze icy as he watched Everett's face contort in rage. "Ready to confess now?"…I pushed open the door to the interrogation room, my footsteps echoing in the silent space.Everett's head turned, and the ferocity in his eyes melted into desperation at the sight of me."Daniela!" He struggled to rise, the shackles holding him firmly in his chair. "You're here at last! Please tell them that I didn't mean for any of this to happen! I was just... I was just so worried about Annie!"His voice was thick with a plea, as if he tru

I turned my back on the chaos and walked over to Zayden, not giving them another look."Get Mr. Lynch to the med station now. The rest of you, stick to the plan and pull out," commanded the officer. The soldiers sprang into action, lifting Zayden with a gentleness they had not shown Everett and Annie. The guy with the glasses sidled up to me, his voice a low murmur, "Ms. Larson, thanks for back there."I just shook my head. "I was just doing my job."Annie's wails and Everett's curses faded into the background, swallowed up by the dark embrace of the bunker. The officer stepped in front of me, his salute crisp and serious. "Ms. Larson, your cool head back there saved us. You're in charge of the evac now, by direct order."I saluted back, all business. "The mission will be completed, sir."As the roar of the plane split the night, I caught a final glimpse of Everett and Annie being shoved into the military truck. This time, I was not going to let them get another shot at me.T

He swiftly assessed Zayden's condition, his face grim. "Anaphylactic shock! We need a medic now!"The medic hurried over but quickly shook his head in dismay. "We're out of adrenaline. He needs a hospital, stat!"The officer's eyes snapped up, slicing through the crowd. "Who has any allergy meds?"Silence hung heavy until Annie, looking guilty, edged behind Everett. The guy with glasses pointed at her, furious. "She took the meds! That faker is just pretending to be sick!"The officer's gaze turned icy as he marched toward Annie.Everett stepped protectively in front of her. "Back off! Annie is really sick!""Move," the officer commanded, his tone frosty, "or face charges for interfering with military duties."Everett tried to protest but was quickly pinned down by two soldiers.Annie let out a shriek as her designer bag tumbled to the ground, spilling lipsticks across the floor. The officer picked one up and scoffed, "Makeup? That's your excuse for holding up the evacuation?
