What begins as a chance meeting soon grows into something neither of them can ignore. But fate has a cruel sense of humor. Just as Clara and Axel begin falling for each other, they discover they are standing on opposite sides of a bitter legal battle. Their clients are entangled in a case filled with secrets, betrayal, and accusations that threaten to destroy more than one family. Every courtroom victory for one means a devastating loss for the other. As professional duty collides with undeniable attraction, Clara and Axel find themselves questioning everything they believe about loyalty, justice, and love. Chapter 1 - Bottle Green Disaster

Clara Ashford stared at her reflection and sighed for what felt like the hundredth time that morning.

The bottle-green dress was a disaster.

Not because it was ugly. In fact, objectively speaking, it was beautiful. The satin fabric hugged her figure perfectly, the neckline was elegant, and the skirt flowed gracefully to the floor.

But Clara hated the color.

Absolutely hated it.

"Who willingly chooses bottle green for a wedding?" she muttered under her breath.

The makeup artist nearby laughed.

"You've been saying that for an hour."

"And I'll probably keep saying it for another hour."

The woman shook her head. "You look stunning."

"That's not the point."

Clara adjusted the dress again.

As a family lawyer, she spent most of her days in tailored suits, neutral colors, and practical heels. She was comfortable arguing custody disputes and negotiating divorce settlements, but standing around in a satin dress while smiling for photographs felt like a form of torture.

Unfortunately, her best friend Alena had other plans.

When Alena had asked her to be a bridesmaid months ago, Clara had immediately agreed.

What kind of friend would refuse?

A foolishly loyal one, apparently.

The bridal suite buzzed with excitement.

Hairdressers moved around carrying brushes and curling irons. Makeup artists rushed between chairs. Someone was searching for a missing bouquet.

Meanwhile, Alena looked annoyingly perfect.

The bride stood near the window, glowing with happiness.

"Stop glaring at the dress," Alena said.

"I'm not glaring."

"You absolutely are."

"I just have a complicated relationship with this color."

Alena laughed.

"Too late now."

Clara rolled her eyes.

"Remind me why I love you again?"

"Because I'm getting married and you have no choice."

Fair point.

--------------------------------

A few minutes later, the wedding coordinator rushed into the room carrying a clipboard.

"Bridesmaids, please gather downstairs immediately!"

The coordinator looked stressed.

More stressed than usual.

Which was never a good sign.

Everyone followed her into the grand hall of the hotel.

The wedding venue was breathtaking.

Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling.

White roses decorated every corner.

Soft music floated through the air.

Guests were already beginning to arrive.

Clara glanced around.

Something felt strange.

There were fewer bridesmaids than expected.

Much fewer.

The coordinator cleared her throat.

"So..."

That single word already sounded dangerous.

"Several members of the bridal party were unable to attend."

A collective groan filled the room.

"One has the flu."

Another groan.

"One missed her flight."

More groans.

"And another has a family emergency."

The coordinator looked ready to cry.

Clara pinched the bridge of her nose.

Wonderful.

Absolutely wonderful.

Most of Alena's bridesmaids had been friends from university and work.

Clara barely knew any of them.

She was the only friend from Alena's high school years.

Normally that wouldn't matter.

Except now nearly everyone she had expected to meet wasn't here.

What a disappointment.

The coordinator began reorganizing everything.

"Because several people are missing, we need to adjust the pairings."

More shuffling.

More confusion.

More complaints.

The coordinator started assigning bridesmaids to groomsmen.

Clara wasn't paying attention until she heard her name.

"Clara Ashford."

She looked up.

"Yes?"

"You'll be paired with—"

The coordinator stopped.

A man had just entered the hall.

He looked like he had sprinted through three airports and fought traffic in two different cities.

His tie wasn't completely straight.

His hair looked like he had run a hand through it a dozen times.

And judging from the expressions around the room...

He was very late.

The coordinator sighed dramatically.

"There you are."

The man offered an apologetic smile.

"I'm sorry."

"You are forty-three minutes late."

"Technically thirty-eight."

"Not helping."

A few people laughed.

Clara studied him from across the room.

Tall.

Very tall.

Probably over six feet.

Brown eyes.

Straight brown hair that looked slightly messy despite obvious attempts to fix it.

Black suit.

Black shirt.

Bottle-green tie.

Which somehow looked almost as miserable as Clara felt in her dress.

Interesting.

The coordinator pointed at Clara.

"You two."

The man blinked.

Clara blinked.

"You'll be partners."

"Oh."

That was all Clara managed to say.

The man walked toward her.

As he approached, she noticed his eyes more clearly.

Warm brown.

The kind that looked thoughtful.

The kind that looked dangerous.

Not dangerous in a frightening way.

Dangerous in a distracting way.

A very different problem.

He stopped in front of her.

For a moment neither spoke.

Then he glanced at her dress.

She narrowed her eyes.

"What?"

His lips twitched.

"Nothing."

"You're judging the dress."

"No."

"You are."

"I was actually wondering if you hate the color as much as I hate my tie."

Clara stared at him.

Then laughed.

A real laugh.

Unexpected.

The man's smile widened.

"See?"

"You hate it?"

"I despise it."

Clara immediately felt better.

"Finally, someone with taste."

"Thank you."

The coordinator interrupted before the conversation could continue.

"Wonderful. Now stand together."

They obeyed.

A photographer immediately appeared.

"Closer."

They moved slightly.

"Closer."

They moved again.

"Closer."

At this point Clara was fairly certain the photographer wanted them to occupy the same physical space.

The man looked equally confused.

The photographer nodded approvingly.

"Perfect."

Flash.

Another flash.

And another.

Clara maintained a professional smile.

The man somehow managed to look relaxed despite arriving late enough to cause an organizational crisis.

Unfair.

Very unfair.

After several photographs, the photographer began arranging everyone else.

Groomsmen.

Bridesmaids.

The bride and groom.

Parents.

Family members.

The entire process felt endless.

---------------------------------------

At one point Clara found herself standing beside her assigned partner again.

Neither seemed particularly interested in small talk.

Yet neither seemed eager to leave the conversation either.

Strange.

Very strange.

The photographer raised his camera.

"Everyone look here!"

Flash.

Another flash.

More laughter.

More photographs.

Dominic wrapped an arm around Alena.

The bride looked happier than Clara had ever seen her.

For a brief moment, Clara felt her irritation fade.

This day wasn't about the dress.

Or the missing bridesmaids.

Or the endless photographs.

It was about celebrating two people who loved each other enough to choose each other forever.

A rare thing.

A beautiful thing.

The photographer lowered his camera.

"Perfect."

The group began dispersing.

Clara adjusted her dress again.

Her mysterious partner checked his watch.

Then their eyes met.

For a second, the noise around them seemed quieter.

Not silent.

Just distant.

As if the room had shifted slightly.

Neither looked away immediately.

A strange awareness settled between them.

Not attraction.

Not yet.

But possibility.

The kind that arrives without warning.

The kind that changes everything.

The coordinator suddenly appeared again.

"Good. Stay together. You'll be entering the ceremony as partners."

The man groaned softly.

Clara laughed.

"Looks like we're stuck together."

His brown eyes sparkled with amusement.

"Could be worse."

"Really?"

"Definitely."

He offered his hand.

For the first time since meeting him, his smile looked genuine.

"I'm Axel Winchester."

Clara looked at his hand.

Then at him.

Something fluttered unexpectedly inside her chest.

Ridiculous.

She shook his hand anyway.

"Clara Ashford."

Neither of them knew it yet.
