Chapter 4

Author: Flip Harmonica
I turned and walked out of the banquet hall. Behind me, the applause and cheers were sealed away by the doors.

I felt heat rush from my nose. When I wiped it, my palm came away crimson.

Blood dripped onto the carpet and spread quickly.

I followed the emergency stairwell to the terrace.

My vision began to blur. The city neon stretched into twisted lines.

My phone vibrated.

It was a message from Vivian Harkins.

[Stop throwing a tantrum. After this ends, I'll take you for a late-night meal at that diner you like.]

[Landon did very well today. You should be happy for him. After all, he's your brother. Once he succeeds, he'll help you too.]

I looked at the screen, and a mocking curve tugged at my lips.

She remembered that I liked that diner, but she had forgotten that I only liked it because back then, we were poor and it was all we could afford.

Now that she had risen in the world, she gave my brother custom suits, diamonds, and my graduate admission.

What she gave me was still a cheap bowl of comfort food.

I opened the reply box. I wanted to curse at her. I wanted to damn her.

In the end, I typed only three words.

[I'm leaving.]

Vivian replied immediately.

[Leaving where? Come home early. Your brother still needs your tutoring before he starts school.]

I smiled.

Blood ran from the corner of my mouth and dripped onto the phone screen, landing right over Vivian Harkins's name.

Good.

I never wanted to see that name again.

[Countdown: 00:03:00]

My sight darkened. A sharp ringing filled my ears, like countless cicadas screaming.

I slid down to the floor and leaned against the cold railing, gasping again and again, yet unable to draw in even a breath of air.

My phone vibrated again.

This time it was a social media notification.

With the last of my strength, I swiped the screen open.

One minute earlier, Vivian had posted an update.

The photo showed her adjusting Landon's tie onstage. The two of them smiled at each other like a perfect couple.

The caption read: [My pride. Protecting you was the best decision I ever made.]

"Heh..."

Then what was I?

Since I was extra, since I was the "suboptimal option" meant to be sacrificed.

Then I would disappear completely.

I wanted to see, once they lost me, once that so-called Academic Prodigy System demanded its price,

whether this family could still maintain that perfect facade.

[Countdown: 00:01:00]

Breathing became difficult. I gasped again and again, but no oxygen entered my lungs.

I remembered when I was five, burning with fever and curled in the corner of the couch.

My father held my brother while watching cartoons. My mother worked in the study.

In my feverish haze, I tried to pour myself water and dropped the glass.

The first thing my father shouted when he rushed over was, "Damn brat, don't let the glass shards hit your brother's feet!"

So there had been signs all along.

So in this life, I had never once been firmly chosen.

My phone slipped from my hand.

With a soft crack, it hit the floor.

The world went utterly quiet.

Vivian Harkins, I give you my life.

And I return that so-called fairness to myself.

[Countdown: 00:00:00]

[Program execution complete.]

[Host Aaron Hutchinson: death confirmed.]

[Per host's request, revenge program initiating immediately.]

Five years later. The National Medal of Science ceremony was being broadcast worldwide.I wore a red bespoke suit and stood beneath the spotlight. In my hands was the heavy trophy, the highest honor in my field of biology.Thunderous applause rose below the stage, and countless flashes surrounded me."Thank you to my team, and thank you to the person I love, Tessa Mercer."I held the microphone, swept my gaze across the audience, and finally looked into the camera, my eyes steady."Most of all, I want to thank the self who never gave up on light, even in darkness."Along this path, I have witnessed too much injustice, but I have also proven that as long as you are alive, fairness will eventually arrive."At the same time, on the other side of the city.In a dark, damp basement, the air reeked of mold and human waste. An old television was playing the award ceremony.Vivian Harkins was curled up on a broken sofa. Her hair had turned completely white. She was not even thirty,

Vivian Harkins did not give up.After that day, she began waiting downstairs outside the laboratory building, hiding in the corners and spying on my every move. She observed the rhythm of my steps. She observed my habit of adding two cubes of sugar to coffee.Late one night, heavy rain fell over Boston.I had just walked out of the lab building when a worn black umbrella appeared above my head.Vivian stood behind me, soaked through, most of the umbrella tilted toward me."Professor Whitmore, you don't have an umbrella, do you? I'll walk you to your car.""Ms. Harkins, is this interesting to you?"I asked coldly.Vivian's hand shook, and she explained in panic."Aaron... I know it's you."No one in this world knows you better than I do. You always step with your left foot first. When you read data reports, you like to bite your lip..."Even if you changed your face and your voice, I know it's you."Did you... take over another body? I know it sounds absurd, but if it's you

My talent was like a seed buried for years that had finally found suitable soil and grown wildly."Professor Whitmore, the new lab equipment just arrived. It needs your signature."My teaching assistant, Jake, pushed open the lab door. Behind him was a courier in a dusty work uniform.I answered casually, "Leave it there.""Um... it has to be signed for in person."The courier's voice was low, cautious, and hoarse.Even after three years, I recognized that voice instantly. The woman in front of me wore a baseball cap. Her skin had become dark and rough from long exposure to wind and sun.Her back was hunched. There was no trace left of the elegant, confident department

Third-Person POVImpossible...Vivian Harkins muttered to herself. She suddenly grabbed the male officer's arm."He was always healthy! He hardly even caught colds! How could he suddenly become brain-dead? Did you make a mistake? This must be some fake-death drug! He's acting!"The officer shook off her hand."Acting? Then show me how to act as a corpse."He pointed at the purplish livor mortis that had already appeared on Aaron Hutchinson's neck."These are postmortem changes. He has been dead for at least three hours."Vivian's mind went blank.Three hours ago.She had been at the banquet, watching Landon present that paper and basking in applause. At that same time, Aaron had been alone on the terrace.Bleeding from the nose, feeling his life slip away bit by bit.And she had sent him messages.Telling him he was throwing a tantrum.Telling him he should be happy for his brother.Vivian bent over and retched violently. My mother leaned against the wall, her face gr
