I don't sleep.

I sit on the edge of the bed in this bare, clean room and I think, which is what I do instead of sleeping when everything is too loud inside my head. The room is not what I expected. Not a cell. Not what captivity looks like in the movies. A real bed, a lamp, a window with actual glass that actually opens, and a lock on the door that locks from the inside, which he told me about deliberately.

Why tell me that, unless he wanted me to feel it?

I turn the lock. Then I turn it back. Then I sit on the bed and I look at the ceiling and I think about the way he said no, you weren't when I said I was leaving, and the specific quality of certainty in it, not a threat, not a boast. Just a statement of fact from someone who is accustomed to being correct.

His name is Lucien Varga. I heard one of the others say it in the courtyard, with the particular deference of people who have calibrated their behavior around someone dangerous. Varga. The name means nothing to me, which means he operates below the surface where my father's world floats, which means he is probably far more dangerous than anything I have previously encountered.

My father's dangerous men wear suits. They smile at dinner tables. Their violence is clean and deniable and expressed through lawyers and financial instruments and the kind of threat that never quite coalesces into something you can name.

Lucien Varga's dangerous is different. It is in his hands, the way they move, the way they don't move, the way he stepped off that motorcycle and the four men who had me cornered found somewhere else to be without a single raised voice. That is the kind of dangerous that doesn't need a lawyer.

I should be more afraid of him than I am.

I am afraid of him. I want to be precise about that. The specific quality of fear I feel when I think about his face, the dark eyes taking inventory is real and I am not dismissing it. But I also spent three years being afraid of Anton Reves and what that marriage would mean, and compared to that particular fear, the compound and the motorcycle and the flat-voiced certainty of my territory is almost manageable.

Almost.

I give myself until four in the morning.

That is the window, the dead hour when compounds like this run on skeleton crews, when attention lapses are most likely, when the gap between observation and reaction is widest. My father's security team runs on the same logic. I have been observing security patterns for three years from the inside of a gilded cage, and whatever else the Harmon household taught me, it taught me that.

I use the three hours to catalogue what I know. Entry point: the main courtyard gate, keycard operated. The east wall: lower, older, the mortar between the stones looks soft in places climbable. The motorbike I arrived on is in the courtyard, keys unknown. On foot, the road north leads back to the main highway.

On foot is fine. On foot has always been fine.

At four, I go to the window.

It opens quietly, good hinges, maintained. The drop to the ground is eight feet, manageable. I ease my bag out first, lower it on the strap, let it drop the last two feet into the darkness below.

I am halfway through the window when the light comes on.

Not in my room. Outside. The courtyard floods with a warm amber glow from overheads I hadn't clocked, and in the center of the space leaning against the wall directly below my window with his arms folded and his face turned upward... is Lucien Varga.

He is looking at me with the expression of a man who set his alarm.

I stare at him.

He stares at me.

"Eight feet," he says. "You'd have made it fine. The ankle, you'd want to roll on landing, you were angled wrong for the drop."

I stare at him.

"I clocked the window in the first five minutes," he says. "East room is the obvious choice if someone wants to go over the wall. I'd have put you somewhere else but I wanted to see what you'd do."

A test. He ran a test on me.

"What happens now?" I ask. My voice comes out level, which I am proud of.

He looks at me for a long moment. "Now you come back inside," he says, "and we have a conversation we should have had earlier."

"About what?"

"About Anton Reves," he says.

The name lands like cold water. My hands grip the window frame.

"And about why," he continues, in the same flat unhurried voice, "he has had three separate people asking questions in this town about a girl matching your description since nine o'clock tonight."

Three people.

Since nine.

Which means they were already here before I even arrived. Which means the SUV at the depot was real. Which means the gap I thought I created was narrower than I believed.

I look down at Lucien Varga's upturned face, and I think about eight feet and a rolled ankle and three of Anton Reves's men somewhere in this town in the dark.

I climb back inside.

We do not sleep before dawn. The compound spends the remaining hours of darkness in a state of controlled, exhausted triage. Reth confirming the perimeter breach is fully sealed, Drace's team treating two minor injuries from the north wall engagement, Marcus walking the damaged section of wall with the specific grim assessment of a man calculating exactly how thoroughly this compound's most fundamental promise has been tested and, in the end, held.Irina arrives in the operations room just before sunrise, having worked through the entire crisis from the digital files that survived because she had, with her characteristic decades of caution, already backed up every piece of her research to three separate secure locations outside the compound's own network."They took the originals," she says, her voice carrying the specific weight of a woman who has watched thirty years of careful, patient work nearly evaporate in a single night. "But not the digital record. Not the work I completed to

I hear the gunfire at the north wall fade into something more distant, and I hold Iris against my chest in the small reinforced room Reth designed years ago, and I tell myself, with the specific desperate discipline of every dangerous night this family has survived, that the walls around us are solid, that the door is locked, that this is exactly the kind of moment this room was built for. Then the lights go out.Not flickering, not the gradual fade of a power fluctuation, instant, complete darkness, the specific abruptness of a deliberate cut rather than an accident.I go utterly still, Iris's small weight pressed against me, my hand already moving toward the small flashlight Reth insisted I keep in this room for exactly this contingency, and in the absolute black I hear something that makes every cell in my body go cold with a fear deeper than anything Volkov messages or photographs have managed across two days.A sound at the door. Not forced entry, something quieter, more careful,

I turn slowly, and the man standing in the corridor behind me is not what I expected, though I am not certain, in the half second before I fully process him, what I had expected at all.He is older than the voice on the phone ever suggested, genuinely old, in his late seventies at least, with the specific frail quality of a body that has outlasted the will it carries, leaning slightly on a cane that I suspect, given everything I now know about him, is not purely decorative. He is dressed plainly, almost forgettable, the deliberate unremarkable presentation of a man who has spent his entire life believing invisibility is its own kind of armor. His eyes are the only thing that match the voice exactly, pale, patient, entirely without the fear or urgency that should accompany a man this exposed, standing in a corridor he has just ordered breached by force."You came in person," I say. "After forty years of never appearing anywhere directly.""I am an old man, Mr. Varga," he says. "I have

I am running before the alarm's first cycle finishes, Faye half a step behind me with Iris already gathered against her chest from the nursery on instinct rather than direction, and the compound around us has transformed in the space of seconds from the quiet exhausted aftermath of a long night into something closer to the operational readiness of a place preparing for war.Drace's voice comes through every radio simultaneously. "Multiple vehicles, north approach, moving fast, no lights. I count four, possibly five.""Volkov people," Marcus says, already moving toward the gatehouse with the specific economical speed of a man who has done exactly this kind of response more times than he could count across thirty years."Or worse," Gregor says, falling into step beside him. "A coordinated force this size, moving without lights on a precision approach to confirmed coordinates, this is not a man attempting another reconnaissance pass. This is the actual taking."I reach the operations roo

Théo's photograph arrives a moment later, and I look at it over Lucien's shoulder with the specific dread of someone who already suspects, before the image fully loads, that whatever it shows will not be small. It is a grainy still pulled from the gate's archived footage, a delivery van, unmarked except for a generic courier logo that means nothing on its own, parked at the gate four days ago. A man in a plain jacket carries a single box into the east wing, signs something on a tablet held by the receiving crew member, and leaves within ninety seconds."This is the day the lighting system's microphone array was already confirmed compromised," Reth says, pulling up the timeline on the main screen, his voice carrying the specific tightness of a man discovering he missed something he should never have missed. "We were already running the audit that found the listening device. This delivery happened during the exact window when every available crew member was reassigned to that audit inst

We do not sleep. The meeting room fills again before dawn, the entire inner circle gathered around the same table where we built our first response twenty four hours ago, except now the air carries a weight that nothing in this family's two years of facing down impossible threats has fully prepared us for, because every previous danger has been abstract enough, distant enough, to plan against with operational clarity. This is not abstract. This is a man telling us, in writing, the exact time and place he intends to attempt taking my daughter, and demanding that we walk into it without the protection that has kept every other threat at bay."We do not go alone," Marcus says immediately, the same flat certainty he brought to the original assessment that we needed to make Volkov respond to us instead of the reverse. "That is not a negotiating position. That is him asking you to remove every protective layer this family has ever built, at the exact moment he intends to use the absence of
