I don't sleep.

I sit on the edge of the bed in this bare, clean room and I think, which is what I do instead of sleeping when everything is too loud inside my head. The room is not what I expected. Not a cell. Not what captivity looks like in the movies. A real bed, a lamp, a window with actual glass that actually opens, and a lock on the door that locks from the inside, which he told me about deliberately.

Why tell me that, unless he wanted me to feel it?

I turn the lock. Then I turn it back. Then I sit on the bed and I look at the ceiling and I think about the way he said no, you weren't when I said I was leaving, and the specific quality of certainty in it, not a threat, not a boast. Just a statement of fact from someone who is accustomed to being correct.

His name is Lucien Varga. I heard one of the others say it in the courtyard, with the particular deference of people who have calibrated their behavior around someone dangerous. Varga. The name means nothing to me, which means he operates below the surface where my father's world floats, which means he is probably far more dangerous than anything I have previously encountered.

My father's dangerous men wear suits. They smile at dinner tables. Their violence is clean and deniable and expressed through lawyers and financial instruments and the kind of threat that never quite coalesces into something you can name.

Lucien Varga's dangerous is different. It is in his hands, the way they move, the way they don't move, the way he stepped off that motorcycle and the four men who had me cornered found somewhere else to be without a single raised voice. That is the kind of dangerous that doesn't need a lawyer.

I should be more afraid of him than I am.

I am afraid of him. I want to be precise about that. The specific quality of fear I feel when I think about his face, the dark eyes taking inventory is real and I am not dismissing it. But I also spent three years being afraid of Anton Reves and what that marriage would mean, and compared to that particular fear, the compound and the motorcycle and the flat-voiced certainty of my territory is almost manageable.

Almost.

I give myself until four in the morning.

That is the window, the dead hour when compounds like this run on skeleton crews, when attention lapses are most likely, when the gap between observation and reaction is widest. My father's security team runs on the same logic. I have been observing security patterns for three years from the inside of a gilded cage, and whatever else the Harmon household taught me, it taught me that.

I use the three hours to catalogue what I know. Entry point: the main courtyard gate, keycard operated. The east wall: lower, older, the mortar between the stones looks soft in places climbable. The motorbike I arrived on is in the courtyard, keys unknown. On foot, the road north leads back to the main highway.

On foot is fine. On foot has always been fine.

At four, I go to the window.

It opens quietly, good hinges, maintained. The drop to the ground is eight feet, manageable. I ease my bag out first, lower it on the strap, let it drop the last two feet into the darkness below.

I am halfway through the window when the light comes on.

Not in my room. Outside. The courtyard floods with a warm amber glow from overheads I hadn't clocked, and in the center of the space leaning against the wall directly below my window with his arms folded and his face turned upward... is Lucien Varga.

He is looking at me with the expression of a man who set his alarm.

I stare at him.

He stares at me.

"Eight feet," he says. "You'd have made it fine. The ankle, you'd want to roll on landing, you were angled wrong for the drop."

I stare at him.

"I clocked the window in the first five minutes," he says. "East room is the obvious choice if someone wants to go over the wall. I'd have put you somewhere else but I wanted to see what you'd do."

A test. He ran a test on me.

"What happens now?" I ask. My voice comes out level, which I am proud of.

He looks at me for a long moment. "Now you come back inside," he says, "and we have a conversation we should have had earlier."

"About what?"

"About Anton Reves," he says.

The name lands like cold water. My hands grip the window frame.

"And about why," he continues, in the same flat unhurried voice, "he has had three separate people asking questions in this town about a girl matching your description since nine o'clock tonight."

Three people.

Since nine.

Which means they were already here before I even arrived. Which means the SUV at the depot was real. Which means the gap I thought I created was narrower than I believed.

I look down at Lucien Varga's upturned face, and I think about eight feet and a rolled ankle and three of Anton Reves's men somewhere in this town in the dark.

I climb back inside.

I stare at the photo for three seconds. That is the full amount of time I allow myself before I am out of the car, phone to my ear, already moving toward the safehouse door with the cold, operational focus that has kept me alive for fifteen years.Reth picks up on the first ring. "I see it," he says, before I can speak. He is already at the safehouse, he came ahead, which is why he is alive right now. "Compound went hot eight minutes after you left. They were waiting for you to clear the gates.""Casualties?"A pause that costs me more than I show. "Two confirmed. Orvin and the night communications officer." A beat. "The others got out. Sera pulled everyone through the north access."Orvin.... the same Orvin who opened the maintenance door for Reves men last night. He stayed. I don't know if that was loyalty or guilt or the specific paralysis of a young man who made one bad decision and couldn't find a way back from it, but he stayed, and now he is dead, and I file that in the place w

The photo is of us in this car on this road and it was taken from somewhere ahead of us which means whoever sent it is not behind us.They are waiting."How far to the safehouse?" I ask. My voice is level. I am proud of that."Fourteen miles." Lucien has already killed the headlights. We are moving on moonlight and instinct down a road that has gone very dark and very quiet, and his hands on the wheel are the same as they always are steady, unhurried, giving nothing away to anyone watching."They know the direction but not the specific location," I say, thinking out loud, working the problem. "If they had the exact address they wouldn't have sent a warning. The photo is pressure. They want us to stop moving.""Which means we keep moving," he says."Which means we keep moving," I agree.I look at the phone again. Unknown number. The message came through the burner, the Maya Cole phone, which means whoever sent it has access to a number I created in a gas station three hundred miles fro

The interior alarm means one thing: breach. Not over the wall, through a door. Someone opened something from the inside. I am moving before the alarm finishes its first cycle, already running the probability in my head, which door, which access point, who is on duty, where the vulnerability is. Faye is beside me, not behind me, keeping pace with the kind of instinct that doesn't ask for permission. Under other circumstances I would deal with this. Right now I need everyone moving. "East maintenance door," Reth says, appearing from the corridor. "Level access." Level access means a key card. Which means this is not a perimeter breach, it is a sanctioned entry through a door that should not have been sanctioned tonight. "Who has level access besides the inner circle?" I ask, moving. Reth's jaw tightens. "It was issued last month. I cleared it." A pause. "Orvin." Orvin. Twenty two years old, joined eighteen months ago, clean record, sponsored by someone I trusted. I run the threa

Two weeks pass like this. Two weeks of maps and analysis and the particular life of a compound that runs on discipline and purpose and the specific gravity of a man who has organized everything around him without appearing to exert effort. I learn the rhythms. I learn the names. I learn which of his people are curious about me and which are indifferent and which a small, watchful minority are something between suspicious and territorial in a way I can't fully categorize. I learn that Lucien Varga sleeps four hours a night, drinks his coffee black and strong at five in the morning, reads everything himself rather than relying on summaries, and has never once in the two weeks I have been here raised his voice. The not raising his voice is the part I find most unsettling. I have grown up around men who use volume as authority. My father's house was full of that kind of power, the kind that announces itself constantly, that requires constant maintenance and performance. Lucien's auth

I move the sister. Her name is Calla, she is twenty years old, she lives in a two room apartment in the next town over with a roommate who knows nothing about her brother's affiliations. Reves people have been watching her for eleven days, which is how long they've had their secondary asset inside my walls. We extract her clean, two of my most trusted, a vehicle she doesn't know, a safe house she'll be comfortable in. Her brother.. Marco, three years with me, reliable until he wasn't. I deal with separately. Not harshly. The man was afraid for his family. I understand afraid for family in the theoretical sense, as a motivation I have observed in others, even if my own experience of family is not one I examine in useful detail. I remove Marco from anything operationally sensitive and reassign him to something where the security exposure is manageable. He cries, which I was not prepared for, and I sit with that in his presence for thirty seconds and then tell him to get himself toge

  • Biker's Temptation:Claimed by the Ruthless Mafia King   Chapter Seven: Faye POV

Three days pass. I want to account for them accurately because the way they pass is important, not dramatic, not a montage of tension and charged glances, though both of those are present in the background like a low frequency hum I have chosen not to investigate. Three days of the specific, practical work of being alive inside a situation that is not safe and not free but is, for now, functional. He gives me the east room permanently. He does not say this is permanent, he simply stops mentioning my departure, and nobody comes to tell me to pack, and after the third morning I stop thinking about the window. The compound has a rhythm I learn within forty eight hours. Early morning: the overnight crew comes off and the day crew takes over, a transition that happens at six with the clockwork of military discipline. Meals in a communal space at seven, noon, and seven again. I am not excluded from this, which I note. Afternoon: training, meetings, the various operational businesses
