~Rosa~

A cold sweat caught Rosa despite the air conditioning inside the packhouse. She straightened up and moved robotically away from a fallen flower vase and made her way through the sea of rowdy guests to find Kelvin at the center with his hands crossed and glaring at his half sister’s mate

He spotted Rosa and his eyes up with determination, grabbing her by her arm and pulling her to his side.

“My mate is pregnant,” he declared again, this time more firmly. Rosa's heart sank and she tugged on his arm, alarm ringing in her ears.

Neither of them had confirmed anything. He was the one who had gone on about being cautious, so why was he now throwing caution out the window?

What if she wasn't with child? Then…

“What's going on?” The hairs on the back of Rosa’s neck stood on end, her body tensing up the moment she saw her mother-in-law.

“Has everyone gone mute, who's pregnant?!” Magret looked in everyone's direction but Rosa and her chest squeezed with the pain of being overlooked like that.

“Kelvin said so,” His half sister Becca said, her tone shrouded in doubt. “Maybe he's just drunk,” Rosa could see that her husband's half sister was trying to quell the growing tension and give him a way out of the hole he was digging.

But this only made Kelvin more infuriated, his grip on Rosa grew firmer and more possessive.

“I might have had a couple of drinks, but I'm sure of it.” Rosa was gently tugging on his shirt, but he ignored her.

Her mother-in-law’s face became blank. Then she shot Rosa a look. “Is this true?”

Rosa's throat got dry, “Well, I haven't seen my period for two weeks now and–”

“Which means you haven't confirmed anything?” She snapped, then pressed her forehead. She remained oddly quiet for a moment then she called out, “Remi!” A brunette with thick rimmed glasses popped from the other guests and walked over to her.

“Yes, Aunt Margaret.” She answered the call politely.

“Check her,” Magret demanded, pointing a finger at Rosa who was already shaking. Remi was a healer and could understand the flow of energy in a body, identifying any obvious changes such as pregnancy.

Rosa glanced sideways at her mate, wondering if he was going to save her at the last minute, but he was dreaming with confidence and didn't have half of her worries.

She took a deep breath and tried to be positive. Indeed, a lot of signs were pointing to pregnancy, and the doctors had never said anything was wrong with either of them.

So maybe…just maybe she is…

“Not pregnant,” Remi said mechanically, pulling her hands from Rosa’s belly.

“But her period…” Kelvin was grasping at straws now.

“That can be caused by several things, including stress, maybe both of you shouldn't overthink. A baby is bound to come around eventually. Following Remi’s diagnosis, the entire living room got so quiet that a pin falling would have been ear-splitting.

Rosa watched her husband's frozen reaction, then suddenly he released her and forced his way through the crowd marching up the stairs towards their bedroom. Unable to bear the weight of her in-laws' stares, she chased after him.

He moved at the speed of light. Before she reached the hallway, he staggered out of their bedroom with a small, hastily packed bag.

“Kelvin, what are you doing?” She asked, her heart beginning to beat faster.

He looked up from the floor and met her eyes, “Isn't it obvious?” He brushed past her and she followed him again, yelling when they reached the step.

“Kelvin, wait let's talk…” She managed to grab his hand but he shook her off with a grunt.

“KELVIN!” She screamed, lost her balance, and her head nearly split in two, making contact with the top stair step.

She remained there until the thumping vibrations of his steps faded and the stares from her in-laws got heavier. Tears gathered up in her eyes.

The awkwardness was too much for the guests, and slowly they began to trickle out until the only ones left were Becca, cradling her newborn in her arms, and her mother-in-law. By this time, Rosa had sat on the stairs, her head hanging down dejectedly as her mother-in-law called her every word possible but her name.

Rosa took each verbal whip without retaliation, she was used to it. The abuse sent a familiar prickle on her skin and sank needles through her heart.

Margret only stopped when her voice got hoarse and cracked, added with her daughter's plea. “George must be getting impatient waiting outside,” She said, referring to her mate.

She threw Rosa a look of pity then turned away. Soon, both of them were gone, but Rosa remained glued to the stairs, her mind blank while her heart was so heavy.

There was no intention in her heart to deceive anyone. How could her own mate toss her like that to be torn into shreds? His maternal family already didn't have any respect for her. Now, this… well, this was just a cherry on top.

Even after everyone left, she remained on the stairs for what felt like hours, and the next day, she received what looked like an apology text from her mate.

It read; “Sorry, maybe I overreacted a bit. I'm at the office now, I'll see you soon.”

A frown found its way to her face. It's been a while since he turned his office into a route for escape whenever things got too heated in their marriage. She, too, wished that she had a place to run off to, but she wasn't privileged enough to even have that.

Days passed by, and she had not even seen a glimpse of her husband's shadow. She got regular updates from his secretary until it became ridiculous to continue doing so. Four days later, without any warning, she dressed up and made her way to her mate's office, not to know that she was heading straight towards the worst surprise of her life.

Rosa's legs trembled as she stumbled through the empty streets, Elena clutched tight against her chest. Every step sent sharp pain through her body, the wound in her chest burning like fire, but she couldn't stop. Wouldn't stop. "Mommy, you're bleeding," Elena whispered, her small hands pressed against Rosa's shoulder. "I know, baby. I know." Rosa's voice cracked. "Just hold on to me, okay? Don't let go." "I won't. I promise." The streets blurred around them. Rosa's heart raced “ Pierce. I have to get to Pierce. Please, God, let him be alive. Please.” Her slippers had fallen off somewhere behind them, and the cold ground bit into her bare feet. She didn't care. All that mattered was getting home, getting Elena to safety, getting to her husband. “What have I done? What did Kelvin make me do?” She wondered her heart raced with so many possibilities and memories. The memories were fractured, like looking through shattered glass. Pierce's face, twisted in pain. Her own hands s

The night swallowed them both. Elena’s screams faded into the darkness until the house was silent, too silent. Outside, Rosa walked through the empty streets, coldly licking her skin, her slippers making a sound as they slapped the surface of the earth. She clung to Elena as the baby tried her best to move."Let me go! Mommy, please!” she cried. Silence. Only Kelvin’s steady. The street was empty. Wind hissed around her. Rosa didn’t stop, it was as if she was obeying the call of a spirit. Like they were waiting for her and she had to hurry. All Elena's cries fell on deaf ears. She walked until she got to the outskirts of the town She stopped at a tall, dark, covered house. The abandoned house. The wooden door creaked open before she touched it. They were waiting. Whoever was controlling her was waiting for her to meet them. To sacrifice her own child to them. While her husband lay on the ground back at the house, almost dying. Inside, the air smelled dusty, cold, alive

Pierce's vision narrowed to a blurred view. His fingers clawed uselessly at Rosa's wrists, not the witch's, and that was the cruelty of it. The face he'd loved and who he was so sure loved him tightened her grip around him ready to kill him She's still in there. Rosa's still in there. He tried to convince himself. His lungs screamed for air. The world tilted sideways. "Daddy!" Elena's voice cut through the room as she ran down. Rosa's grip tightened. Pierce felt something crack in his throat. His legs gave out. "MOMMY, STOP!" Elena shouted, and tears rolled down her face. Her voice filled with terror. "Please! Please don't hurt Daddy! What's wrong with you? Why are you doing this?" For a fraction of a second, Rosa's fingers loosened. Just barely. Just enough for Pierce to drag in a wheezing breath. *She heard her. Elena got through. "Mommy, it's me! It's Elena!" The little girl was sobbing now, the pendant clutched in both hands. "Please come back! I need you! I need my mommy

Pierce didn't hesitate. He rushed forward, scooping Elena into his arms just as Rosa's body fell violently on the floor. "Daddy!" Elena shrieked, reaching for what looked like her mother. "That's not Mommy right now, baby," Pierce said, his voice steady despite the terror clawing at his chest. He backed toward the door, and Elena clutched tight against him. "Abel Thomas! Get up NOW!" In the hallway, confusion erupted. Matthew stumbled out of his room, rubbing his eyes. " Pierce? What's—" "No questions. Downstairs. Move!" Pierce's voice carried the kind of authority that echoed around the hallway. Abel appeared at the doorway. He looked across the floor, “Rosa,” he tried to reach, “Stop, that is not your Roa right now. I'll explain later. GO!" Behind them, Rosa's body rose from the floor with a smile on her face. Her voice echoes around the hallway. "The children must come with their mother. The blood moon demands it." Pierce shoved the kids toward the stairs. "Run. Get

The reflection in the mirror showed Kelvin's sharp jawline, his broad shoulders, his calloused hands gripping the mirror's edge. Rosa's scream came out in his deep baritone voice. The woman holding the mirror smiled. She was ancient, she had black skin that could melt with the night, "You're in the in-between, dear child. The space where souls wait while their vessels are borrowed." Rosa stumbled backward, Kelvin's larger frame unsteady under her unfamiliar control. The room around her wasn't really a room at all. Shadows pressed in from every direction, occasionally flickering. Her mind immediately flew to her children "Where are my children?" Rosa asked, but her voice came out deep like nothing had happened. "What have you done to my babies?" The old woman set the mirror down on a table with a smile on her face. A dark smile. "Your children are precisely where you left them. Safe in their beds. For now." She circled Rosa slowly, her bare feet making a wet sound on the ston

Kelvin's eyes snapped open to darkness so complete it felt like drowning. His heart hammered against his ribs, no, not his ribs. Something was wrong. Terribly, impossibly wrong. He tried to sit up, but his body wouldn't obey. It moved, yes, but not of his own accord. His arms pushed against the mattress, his legs swung over the edge of the bed, his feet touched the cold hardwood floor, all without his permission. He was a passenger in his own body, except this wasn't his body at all. The realization crashed over him like ice water when he caught sight of his reflection in the darkened window. . Rosa's face stared back at him, her delicate face twisted in an expression of horror that he couldn't even control. Her dark hair fell over shoulders that felt too narrow, too slight. When he tried to scream, only a soft exhale escaped her lips. “What is happening? What is this?” The body, Rosa's body, moved through the hallway. Kelvin fought against the invisible strings pulling
