Chapter Eight

The next day arrived, and Claire got ready to meet Charlotte. She knew when Alexander left the house, and he didn’t even bother to check in on her.

She was on her way out when she ran into Mrs. Hamptons, who immediately rushed up to her. “Mr. Steele says you’re not to go anywhere today, ma’am.”

Claire gave a small smile. “I’m fine, Mrs. Hamptons. I’m just meeting up with a friend at the café nearby.”

“If you insist on going out, then I’ll have to go with you,” Mrs. Hamptons replied.

“I’ll save you the trouble. I won’t be long at all, and it’s broad daylight. I’ll be fine, I promise.”

“If you’re not back in an hour, I’ll call you, and if I can’t get through, I’ll have no choice but to inform Mr. Steele.”

“Alright. I’ll take my leave now,” Claire said and left.

The café where Claire and Charlotte arranged to meet was near the Steele mansion. She didn’t need to take a taxi, so she strolled over, and when she arrived, Charlotte was already waiting.
