Chapter 1

I leaned against the hospital bed, my face drained of color, every breath laced with pain.

The night before, he'd humiliated me deliberately—not only injecting me with a muscle relaxant, but ordering the curtains removed beforehand.

All night long, the clicking of camera shutters outside the window never stopped.

Seeing how weak I was, Dahlia held up her phone and aimed it right at my face, her smile pretty and poisonous:

"Oh my, you're truly famous now. 'Billionaire's new wife turns out to be the ultimate slut'—how do you like that headline trending on social media?"

Something inside me snapped.

I clenched my teeth, pushed myself upright, and swung my hand at her face.

But Alexander was faster. He pulled Dahlia behind him and caught my wrist in midair.

"Wren, haven't you caused enough trouble? You clawed your way into this family, and now you want sympathy? Deal with the consequences."

"Is this what your parents raised? Because they'd be ashamed."

I let out a muffled cry of pain, gripping the sheets beneath me, and screamed until my voice cracked:

"I married you! I'm your wife—I'm a Sterling!"

Alexander's expression didn't waver. His voice didn't waver:

"It's just a piece of paper. You'll never be a real Sterling. I could replace you in a heartbeat."

With that, he shoved my hand away, wrapped his arm around Dahlia, and walked out.

The moment they left, a searing pain tore through my abdomen, and blood began pouring from between my legs.

That violent yank from Alexander had ripped my unhealed surgical wound wide open.

I fumbled for the call button in a panic. After a rushed examination, the doctor looked at me with an agonized expression.

"Ms. Alderton—I'm sorry, Mrs. Sterling—the repair surgery carries extreme risk. We need a family member's signature in person."

My whole body was shaking with pain, cold sweat beading across my forehead.

With the last of my strength, I dialed Alexander's number.

"Alexander, please—I need you here. The doctor says they need a family member to sign off on the surgery. Just ten minutes. Ten minutes, and after that you can go wherever you want..."

On the other end, Alexander let out a derisive scoff, his voice flat with irritation:

"Wren, my time is valuable. I don't have time for your theatrics."

"Drop the act, Wren. It's a shame you never won an Oscar. Nobody's buying it anymore. Give it a rest."

"Please, Alexander, it's just a signature..."

"I've got to take Dahlia to feed her rescue dogs. I have to go."

The line went dead. Above me, I heard muffled laughter.

When I looked up, I saw the doorway packed with people, all staring.

Blood was still pooling beneath me. In my ears, his mockery mingled with their gleeful whispers.

He would rather go feed a stray dog than spend ten minutes coming back to sign for me.

Despair crashed over me like a tidal wave.

With my last remaining strength, I called the Sterling Estate.

"I've made my decision. I'm calling in every favor you owe me for saving his life—in exchange for a clean break from Alexander Sterling. We part ways for good and never see each other again."

I'd been living in Savannah for a little over two weeks, and life had settled into something peaceful and steady. After boarding that plane, George and I had talked about opening a bakery. To our surprise, The Little Wren Bakery became a hit — packed with customers every single day.George used to complain about how quiet things were. Now he was on his feet from dawn to dusk, always with a smile on his face.I was slowly finding myself again.I thought this kind of life would last forever. But Alexander found me.That evening, I was getting ready to close up when I noticed a man outside who looked exactly like him.I was telling myself I must be seeing things when the figure started walking toward me.He'd lost a lot of weight. Stubble lined his jaw. He looked nothing like the polished, immaculate man he used to be.His eyes held joy, and tenderness, and a swirl of emotions I couldn't quite read — but none of the coldness or contempt that once lived there. He stopped at the door and sp

The day Alexander learned the truth, he had the doctor arrested and Dahlia locked away.On his way to see Dahlia, he ran his thumb over the band-aid I'd once prepared for him, murmuring softly:"Wren, is this how you felt back then? This kind of pain? Every time I think of you, it hurts just to breathe."He arrived quickly at the house where Dahlia was being held — a villa on the outskirts of town.Down a long corridor, he descended to a basement.Dahlia was chained to the floor, the room sealed off from every trace of light. When he pushed the door open, the stench of mildew hit him immediately.Dahlia's eyes flickered with a spark of hope when she saw him.She crawled to his feet, clinging and pleading the way she always had:"Alexander, I know I was wrong. Please forgive me. I only did it because I love you so much. I'll never do it again — please, just let me go?"Alexander stared down at her, his gaze utterly empty. He thought of how Dahlia had conspired with the doctor to drug hi

The ache in his chest eclipsed every physical wound a thousand times over.Alexander pressed his hand to his chest, the metallic taste of blood rising in his throat. In the stairwell, Dahlia finally ended the call and was about to exhale in relief when she turned and saw him standing there. She froze, panic written across her face with nowhere to hide."Alexander -- what are you doing here?"She forced a smile, every trace of the venom and malice from moments ago wiped clean."I just needed some air. I was asking the doctor about your condition -- I was worried you weren't recovering well..."Dahlia scrambled for excuses, but Alexander only stared at her in silence, not saying a word. Those eyes that had once looked at her brimming with tenderness now held nothing but cold indifference. He watched her perform, while somewhere in the back of his mind, Wren's anguished sobs played on an endless loop."Alexander, you --"A thousand words jammed in his throat, and in the end, only silence

When Alexander opened his eyes again, he was lying in a hospital bed.He shifted slightly, and pain radiated through every inch of his body.Looking around, he spotted Dahlia slumped over the edge of his bed, asleep. She startled awake at the sound of his movement, her eyes red-rimmed, her voice breaking:"Alexander, you're finally awake. I was so worried about you."She reached out deliberately to feel his forehead, then tucked the blankets snugly around him.Alexander watched her fuss over him in silence. Every gesture matched perfectly with the figure in his memories -- the one who'd stayed by his side through everything.Guilt welled up inside him, and the doubts that had been circling his mind gradually faded. He must have been confused from missing his medication, he told himself. That was the only reason he'd entertained such thoughts.Besides, someone like Wren -- so skilled at playing the victim -- had surely manipulated his grandfather somehow, feeding him fabricated stories

Alexander stared at Dahlia's name on the screen, unable to bring himself to answer. His head was splitting, his grandfather's words still detonating in his ears.He drew a deep breath and swiped to accept the call."What is it, Dahlia?"Her voice came through immediately, thick with tears, every word carefully wounded."Alexander, why aren't you here yet? Did Wren latch onto you again and refuse to let go? Just tell her I only want to share some good news—if it upsets her, I'll get on my knees and apologize, okay?"The same old act. The same reflexive display of victimhood, no matter the circumstances.Alexander's throat tightened. He couldn't believe the woman he'd cherished and sheltered for three years might be a fraud. The words rising in his chest were swallowed back down, buried under the weight of those fractured memories. His voice came out hoarse. "Stop. It's a family dinner tonight. I'll be there soon."After he hung up, he looked at Edmund. His tone hadn't changed."Grandfat

"Never cross paths again?"Alexander stood frozen, clearly unable to believe those words had come from me.After all, everyone knew that for the past few years, Wren had been hopelessly, irrevocably devoted to him.All those bottles of whiskey I'd forced down at dinner parties. The soup I'd kept warm until midnight only for him never to come home. The way I hadn't even flinched when he'd dragged me out to take the fall for Dahlia. As long as it made Alexander happy, I would have given my life without a second thought.Edmund didn't so much as glance up. "Nothing you want to say?"Alexander shrugged, pulled out a chair, and dropped into it with casual indifference."That's impossible, Grandfather. You must have misheard her. She'd kill for the chance to be with me.""She goes dark on the day of a family dinner, then has the nerve to talk to you like that? Someone needs to put her in line. Otherwise, she'll just keep—"Before he could finish, Edmund's cane cracked hard across his leg."I
