Chapter 3

作者: sunny
There was something Jonathan didn't know about himself. He had a genetic condition that should have made it impossible for him to father a child. Any woman should have been impossible. Except Selene. Her genes were a one-in-a-million match for his. Together, they could produce a healthy baby. Apart from her, no one else on earth could.

When the doctor explained it to her, even he had looked stunned.

"Selene, what a coincidence! A pairing this rare, you were genuinely made for each other."

Selene had smiled, embarrassed and proud at the same time. Jonathan's company had just "gone under" at the time. He was barely functioning. She'd decided not to tell him until things got better. She wanted to spare him.

“Jonathan, you should know. The first child you lost will also be the very last one. You will never have another one. Not with Vivienne. Not with anyone. You don't deserve to be a father. You don't deserve to be anyone's husband.”

She gripped the phone hard enough that her knuckles went white.

The next day, Selene was discharged.

She checked herself out of the hospital alone. Jonathan didn't show up until she was already on the sidewalk waiting for a ride.

"Selene, why didn't you call me? I'm your husband." He came up behind her with a sheepish grin. "Did you not want me to pick you up? Is the car too embarrassing?"

Jonathan pulled her against his chest.

"I promise you, one day I'll buy you the most expensive car in the city. I'll put your name on the title. I'll buy you a house. A real one."

He kept talking the whole time he was bundling her into the beat-up sedan. When he leaned over to buckle her in, he produced a bouquet from the back seat.

"What do you think? Pretty, right? These flowers weren't cheap. I went to the florist yesterday and asked them to set aside whatever they couldn't sell. Then this morning I trimmed the stems and put them in fresh water. Look how perfectly they bloomed."

The corner of Selene's mouth twitched. She wasn't smiling at the flowers. She was laughing at the version of herself who used to fall for this.

For three years Jonathan had been buying her affection with garbage. Wilting bouquets, discount-bin chocolates, drugstore perfume. And every single time, she'd thrown her arms around his neck.

“Babe, you're the best.”

“You're so thoughtful. I love it.”

Now Selene wanted to throw up. That was when she noticed the small ring tucked into the center of the bouquet. Her fingers trembled. She pulled it out.

"Surprise, baby." Jonathan plucked it from her hand. "Took me months of paychecks. Here, let me put it on you."

A sapphire ring. He moved it toward her finger. She pulled her hand back.

"Drive first," she said flatly.

He laughed. "Looks like someone's in a mood. Fine. We'll do this at home."

The car eased away from the curb. Selene stared out the window. Her stomach kept rolling.

She wasn't stupid. She could see, even with the naked eye, that the "sapphire" was a lab-grown zircon. Worth maybe twenty bucks.

That was who she was to Jonathan. Not even worthy of a real flower. Not even worthy of a real stone.

Her chest twisted so hard she could feel her own pulse in her teeth. Like a fist in there, squeezing, tearing, drawing blood.

Halfway home, his phone rang.

"Hello, I'm on my—"

"Jonathan. Where the hell are you? Off picking up your wife? Or are you trying to crawl back to her? I miss you. The baby misses you. If you don't come back right now I'm walking out. I'll burn this place down. The mansion you bought me."

Jonathan's face shifted. He glanced sideways at Selene. Her expression didn't change.

"Yes, sir," he said into the phone, voice professional. "I'll be there shortly."

He hung up, turned to her with practiced regret. "Sorry, babe. My boss needs me to redo a deck. He's freaking out. I can't drop you off, but maybe..."

"Fine." She didn't wait for him to finish. "Pull over. I'll grab a ride."

The car stopped. Jonathan leaned in to kiss her. Selene turned her head away.

Something flickered behind his eyes. Cold, and quick. Then he drove off without looking back.

Selene was on stage. The crowd was applauding. The atmosphere was electric. After the talk, Selene opened the floor to questions. That's when she noticed him. A very thin man in a cap and a mask, in the corner of the auditorium. He was watching her speak. Quiet. Still. His eyes had something gentle in them, something close to admiration. He didn't stay long. About fifteen minutes, and then he was gone. When her eyes passed over that corner again, it was empty. Selene kept her composure and moved on to the next question. That evening, Jonathan waited outside the venue for a long time. He finally saw Selene come out, surrounded by reporters and fans. She glowed.Over the past few months, with the depression and everything else, the business had stalled. Deals had fallen through. Partners had pulled their investments. When he tried to pull himself back together, he found he could barely go back to the past. Selene's figure lingered in his mind all the time, impossible to shake off. Distra

Selene and Damien looked at each other. After a beat, Damien said quietly, "Go talk to him."She let out a long breath and nodded.Inside the hospital room, Jonathan was facing the window, with his back to the door. He was murmuring to himself."Selene. That dinner you made me tonight, I loved it. That pale yellow sundress you wear, it suits you, your skin. Where do you want to go for our honeymoon?"Her footsteps cut him off. He turned, and Selene went still.A month. One month. Jonathan didn't look like the same person. He was gaunt. His eyes had sunk into his face. He had several days of beard. Whatever had been impressive about him was gone. He looked like a sickly old man."Selene. You came."A flicker of hope crossed his face. Then it died."I know what this is. You're here to ask me to let you go. I just wanted to make it up to you. So much. I know what I did. I just wanted to spend the rest of my life paying for it. Won't you give me even that?"His voice cracked open. Selene l

The girl who had once shared a packet of instant ramen with him in a basement apartment and called it happiness had now, publicly, written off every year they'd spent together. The Selene up there was glowing. Confident. Beautiful in a way that felt almost unreal. At this moment, her eyes flicked across the room and landed on Jonathan. She looked away in the same beat. After the toasts, Selene and Damien took the floor for the first dance. Jonathan watched from the sidelines and felt, suddenly, that he didn't know her at all. They'd been married. He had never once known she could dance. He had taken her to none of his galas. He had never asked her to be his partner on a dance floor.Something inside him tore. The dance ended. The couple moved through the room with champagne flutes, talking to guests. After a full circle, Selene's eyes settled on him again. He didn't know where the courage came from."Selene. Selene, do you really hate me that much?"Selene and Damien were holding hands

The notification said read. Three days passed and Selene didn't reply.Jonathan worked up the nerve to send another.Jonathan: [Selene, how have you been?]A red exclamation mark. She'd blocked him again. He fell into a much deeper place. He stopped eating. He stopped sleeping. Whole nights, lying awake, replaying the three good years. He was sick with self-hatred. Some part of him wanted to die right in front of Selene to show his repentance and love for her.A month later, news came in: Selene had won second place in the finals. The whole design industry back home went wild. In ten years, no designer from her country had taken a podium spot at that competition. She was an overnight name. She was the hottest designer in the country.Jonathan remembered, suddenly, the day they got married. He had asked her, "What's your dream?"She'd told him, I'm going to be the best designer in the world. He'd patted her on the head and laughed. "Look at you. Your dream is to be a good wife. To be a

There was something charged in the air between them. Damien picked up on it. He said quickly, "I'm not putting anything on you.""Liking you is my business. I've liked you for eight years. I still do. I'm not asking you to be with me. I just want you to be happy."Selene had felt the way he looked at her for weeks now. Since she'd run into him in Paris, he had been with her every single day. When she first arrived, she couldn't stop spiraling. Every memory pulled her under. Damien sat with her through all of it. He absorbed the worst of her grief and panic. He walked her, slowly, out of the place she'd been stuck in.He went with her to meet her advisor. He helped her find an apartment. He took her to buy bedsheets and a kettle and a toothbrush holder. He showed her how to navigate the neighborhood. When she didn't believe in herself, he sat there and listed all the reasons she should. When she walked with her chin to her chest, like she didn't want to be seen, he kept telling her, unt

Selene’breath caught. She had said that.In the weeks since she'd left Jonathan, Selene had thrown herself back into design. The thing she'd actually loved. Her professor had taken her under her wing. She was learning fast. She was happy in a way she'd forgotten she could be.But she hadn't dared to imagine entering an international competition.Damien was right. When she graduated college, her dream had been to be one of the best designers alive, on the biggest stages. Three years of marriage had ground that dream down to a half-buried thought in the back of her head. Once in a while, when something came to her, she still sketched it. International awards, though. That hadn't crossed her mind in years."Selene, this is a real opportunity."He looked at her steadily. "You're the most naturally talented designer I've ever met. Try."She bit her lip. Then she nodded. "Okay."Jonathan stayed in Paris a few more days. He didn't see Selene again. She'd left in the middle of the night and ha
