~•~

I always knew that you couldn’t love someone into loving you. But I always had this glimpse of hope that somehow, Lucas would eventually fall in love with me.

But since Sophia was back in his life, all my hopes were shattered. Even if he thought the best thing to do was end our marriage, I wasn’t ready to give up just yet.

He was about to make a mistake and couldn’t just agree and sign the divorce papers. I wasn’t prepared to let go of him. I wasn’t ready to be a single woman. I still wanted to be his wife.

Normally, I didn’t care what the public had to say. But this time, I didn’t want people to say that Sophia won. I mean, Lucas wasn’t a prize, but I was tired of the constant comparison between me and his ex-girlfriend.

Anyone who knew what was happening would see me as desperate. I always knew I was being desperate but it was the best thing to do.

I had nowhere else to go.

I thought about contacting his family, so they would talk to him on my behalf, but I knew that it would be a waste of time.

Lucas’s family didn’t give a fuck about me.

The only person who cared about me and was capable of making him change his mind was his grandmother. But unfortunately, she passed away six months ago.

She was the reason Lucas and I got married to each other. She treated me with kindness and respect. I knew she was the main reason why Lucas was even nice to me on some days.

But now that she was gone, he didn’t have any reason to be nice to me. He was free to do whatever he wanted to do.

He was free to be the woman he loved. The woman he had been in love with ever since we had been married. Why did she have to come back to New York?

I had been trying my best to ignore her presence. I chose not to talk to Lucas about it. I hoped it was just a temporary thing. But I was wrong.

Even after so many years, Lucas was still in love with her. He wouldn’t even think twice before choosing her over me. But it didn’t matter because I wasn’t going to sign those divorce papers.

After I left the room, I went downstairs to the living room and sat on the couch. I felt like my whole world was falling apart and I didn’t have any control over it.

Why did I allow myself to fall in love with someone who made it clear that I was just his wife on paper? I felt so stupid.

I even felt more stupid because I was still trying to hold on to him. But everything would be worth it in the end. He would realize his mistake and come back to me.

I pulled out my phone from my pocket and called my best friend. I needed to talk to someone about what was happening before I lost my mind.

Plus, I didn’t want to be alone with my thoughts.

“Hey, how are you doing?” Olivia’s concerned voice echoed from the other end of the line.

“Lucas gave me divorce papers.” Tears rolled down my cheeks as I went straight to the point. “He wants to end the marriage because of her.”

“Sophia?” Olivia asked, but there wasn’t any hint of surprise in her voice. “Oh my goodness! But I warned you about it.”

I rolled my eyes. “Yes, but what could I have done?” I asked, my voice laced with disdain as I thought about everything.

Olivia let out a wistful sigh. “So what are you going to do?”

Without hesitation, I responded. “I’m not signing those papers.” My voice was laced with determination. “I refused to sign them. I’m not ready to get divorced.”

Olivia was silent for a while. I even thought the line had disconnected until she cleared her throat and continued. “Are you sure that is the right thing to do? You’ll just end up getting hurt.”

Olivia had always tried her best to convince me to leave. But I couldn’t. I mean, where else did I have to go? I didn’t want to start all over.

I knew she wanted what was best for me, but I needed to do what was on my mind.

I nodded my head. “Yes, it is the right thing to do.”

Olivia sighed. “So what did Lucas say when you refused to sign the papers?” She asked, her voice laced with a hint of curiosity.

I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t know. He mentioned that he wants to propose to Sophia.” My heart broke with each word that came out of my mouth. “He says he has been seeing her for a while and she isn’t okay sharing him with someone else.”

Olivia gasped. “What the actual fuck, Layla?”

“I know, I know.” I wiped off my tears with the back of my hands. “You don’t have to say anything.” I already knew what she would say next.

“He doesn’t even treat you right. His family sees you as a leech. And still, you can’t leave?” I didn’t miss the clear disappointment in her voice.

Just as I was about to respond, I heard someone coming down the stairs. “I’ll call you back later, Lucas is coming down.” With that, I hung up the call and waited for him to come down.

“I already signed my part, I need you to sign yours and leave the house before I return from work later in the day,” His hushed voice echoed through the quiet house.

I thought my refusal to sign the papers would make him change his mind, but I was just being delusional. “Are you serious? You actually want to throw three years down the drain?” I asked.

Lucas seemed uninterested. “Don’t make me ask the securities to help you out. I don’t want to see you here when I return.” He warned sternly before walking out of the house.

  • Billionaire’s Ex-Wife’s Revenge   111. New Chapter

Chapter 111 Lucas Brown ~•~ Becky’s sister actually wanted to drag me to court. After she realized she didn’t have a solid case, she resorted to asking for a settlement. She asked for a million dollars. I didn’t understand her pain, but if a million dollars would make her feel better, I didn’t mind wasting it on her. At least, she would get off my back. I stopped by my parents’ house after l was done with my lawyer. I hadn’t seen them in a while, and with everything that was going on, they requested to see me. “Lucas, come here.” My mother pulled me into a warm hug as soon as I stepped foot into the living room. “I missed you so much.” My lips curled into a soft smile. “I missed you too, ma’am.” “How are you holding up?” Her expression turned sympathetic as she broke the hug. “Do you need to go for therapy?” I couldn’t hold back my laughter even if I tried. “No, I don’t need therapy,” I said as we settled down on the couch. “Where is Dad?” I asked, my eyes

Chapter 110 Layla Patel ~•~ Lucas had to take care of some stuff concerning Becky’s passing, so he wasn’t present for lunch with Olivia. A part of me was relieved because I knew that they weren’t exactly fond of each other. And I wasn’t in the mood to mediate tension. Still, I hoped one day we would all be able to sit together and just be civil. But that was a task for another day. Lunch lasted for about two hours. The kids engaged in conversation with me and Olivia. It was fun and I enjoyed catching up on our lives - even if most of my part was sad. I managed to smile - not because it didn’t hurt, but because I felt proud of myself for surviving them. It made me stronger. And I was happy that phase of my life was over. Now I was surrounded by people who genuinely loved and cared about me. Life felt a little bit lighter and I couldn’t stop smiling. Soon enough, the girls got bored with us and retreated to their room. After they left, I finally got t

Chapter 109 Layla Patel ~•~ My lips curled into a proud smile as I watched everyone sit around the table, eating dinner. For a moment, everything seemed perfect. The girls were happy to be in New York. I was also happy to be there. It felt like a veil of sadness had been lifted from my life. There was peace. “Are you guys enjoying your food?” Lucas and the girls nodded collectively. “Mama is the best cook ever.” Akira bragged, turning to Lucas. Lucas chuckled. “I know, I’ve been missing a lot.” “I’m so happy that we are all here now.” Lily chimed in on the conversation, grinning from ear to ear. I felt the same way too. After dinner, the kids went upstairs to their room, while I stayed back to clear the table and wash the dishes. “You know you don’t have to do all these by yourself, right?” Lucas asked as he followed me into the kitchen. I laughed. “I know, but I just want to do it.” “You’re so humble.” I nodded. “I guess I am.” Sho

Trigger warning: This chapter depicts suicidal themes and may be triggering for some readers. Reader discretion advised. Chapter 108 Lucas Brown ~•~ “You killed my sister! You fucking killed my sister because you didn’t want her to give birth to your child!” Becky’s sister’s voice sounded far away even though she was standing in front of me. I couldn’t bring myself to process what was happening. I just stood there, shocked. “Wait to hear from our lawyer. You will lose a lot of money after I take you to court.” She continued to threaten me as she cried. I didn’t kill Becky. She committed suicide. Becky killed herself by overdosing on drugs. I don’t know why she did it. But I didn’t ask her to do it. Why was her sister blaming me? Even if I didn’t want to have anything to do with her, I didn’t wish death on her. Becky had been my assistant for years, and I cared about her as a person. Seeing her lifeless body made my blood freeze. But I felt g

Chapter 107 Layla Patel ~•~ In the middle of our conversation, Lucas received a phone call that left him shocked. “What’s going on?” I asked, my eyebrows etched in confusion. He exhaled sharply. “I don’t know yet. I have to go.” Without another word, he turned around and left me standing alone. I couldn’t help but wonder who was on the other end of the phone or what they had said to him. After he left, I walked back to my room and shut the door. I would get an explanation when he returned home. I just hoped that it wasn’t something bad that had happened. I picked up my phone and called Olivia. “Hey, it’s me again.” I chuckled lightly as she answered the call. “What’s going on?” Olivia asked with a hint of curiosity in her voice. “Something just happened,” I replied, sitting down on the bed. “Would you judge me if I told you that I have feelings for Lucas?” There was a brief silence. For a moment, I thought Olivia had abruptly ended the call because s

  • Billionaire’s Ex-Wife’s Revenge   106. Something Bad

Chapter 106 Lucas Brown ~•~ Becky seemed terrified. “I didn’t know you would show up. By the time I called my sister to stop her, she was already at your house.” She offered a lame apology. My fists curled into a ball. I had to take multiple deep breaths to calm myself down. Before I could say anything else, Jamie stepped in. “You’ve been nothing but ungrateful. You should be lucky we didn’t sue you for trapping my brother with a baby. I don’t even like you but I’ve been here for you throughout your pregnancy but it’s not enough.” Becky whimpered, her voice shaky. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean….” Jamie cut her off before she could complete her sentence. “I don’t know what your intentions were but best believe, we will file for custody after you give birth and you will be out of our lives for good.” I stayed quiet as Jamie continued speaking. Someone actually needed to put Becky in her place. I had been giving her grace because I felt she was just lashing
