ALEXANDER'S POV

Katherine looked like she’d been hollowed out from the inside, all color drained, eyes glassy, hands trembling as she clung to my shoulder. For a second I forgot how to breathe. The sound of her sobs was small, like someone trying not to let the world hear them break.

“Kathie,” I said, voice steady because I needed it to be. “Look at me.”

She lifted her face slowly. Her eyes were raw. When she whispered, “Help me,” the single word was a knife.

It stripped whatever façade I’d been wearing away: CEO, businessman, public persona. All I saw was the woman who’d given me a son and trusted me enough to let me be here.

“Tell me what happened,” I said. I crouched until my forehead was level with hers. It felt obscene to be so close and not know what to do.

She swallowed, words arriving in ragged pieces. “They called a meeting. Clara presented a will , Alex, she presented a will, and Mr. Hass…he said it was real. He said it wasn’t fake.”
