KATHERINE'S POV

I must have been silent for too long, staring at the highlighted signature because Hazel nudged me gently.

“Look here,” she said, leaning closer and pointing to a signature line. “This is your mother’s actual signature on a real estate transfer she signed a few months before she died. Now look at the one on Clara’s will.”

She pulled out a printed copy of the will Clara had flaunted at the meeting. My stomach twisted seeing it again.

“Notice anything?” Hazel asked.

I compared both signatures carefully, my pulse racing. At first glance, they looked identical—but Hazel had circled a small curve near the end of the “r.”

“She never used that curve,” Hazel said quietly. “I remember because I saw her signed documents when we were going through the paperwork for the company. She always stopped her ‘r’ sharply. This one loops backward, just slightly, but enough to suggest it was traced or copied.”
