LOGINThe phone rang in Howard's pocket and he pulled it out, his expression going carefully blank when he saw the name on the screen.
He was here to say goodbye to Claire. "I need to take this." He stood from the chair and headed outside. He stepped out into the hallway and closed the door softly behind him before answering. "Jeff." "Grandpa." Jeff's voice sounded tired. "Do you have a minute?" "What do you want?" There was a pause on the other end. "I was hoping we could have lunch tomorrow. There's something I need to tell you." "What is it?" He asked curiously and briefly wondered if his grandson ever missed his wife. "I'd rather discuss it in person." Another pause. "Please. It's important." He wanted to refuse but curiosity and anger made him agree, Claire would be long gone by tomorrow anyways. "Fine. Tomorrow at one.” He grumbled. "Thanks, Grandpa. I'll see you then." The line went dead and he stood there in the hallway staring at his phone. He could already guess what Jeff wanted to tell him and with a sad smile and a shake of his head, he went back in. *** The restaurant was quiet when he arrived the next day. Jeff was already seated at their usual table near the back, looking composed and calm in his expensive suit. He must admit that it's been a while since he had lunch with his grandson in this restaurant, the last time they had lunch together was when he threatened to disinherit him if he doesn't marry Claire. "Grandpa." Jeff stood and Howard sat down without a word. They ordered and sat in uncomfortable silence until the waiter left. "Thanks for coming." Jeff's voice was measured. "I know things have been difficult between us since..." "Since you murdered your wife?" The words came out cold and furious. Jeff's face tightened. "It wasn't like that and you know it. The doctor made a mistake during the surgery. It was a tragic accident." "A convenient accident." Howard muttered, staring at Jeff. "What's that supposed to mean?" Jeff asked in a tight voice. Howard leaned forward and kept his voice low and dangerous. "It means you got exactly what you wanted. Your wife is dead and you are free to marry Irene." Jeff's eyes flashed with anger. "That's not fair. I treated Claire well during our marriage. I gave her everything she could have wanted." "Everything except your time, your attention, and your respect." "I tried with her, I really did." Jeff's voice grew defensive. "But she was so manipulative, always trying to make me feel guilty, always playing the victim. I might have even fallen for her eventually if she hadn't been like that and you are always taking her side, I am the one related to you, remember?" The words made him want to reach across the table and shake some sense into Jeff. "I am taking her side because Claire was a sweet soul but you are behaving more like a jerk." His voice was hard. "I thought you were intelligent enough to see who Claire really is." "A sweet soul?" Jeff laughed bitterly. "She trapped me into that marriage, Grandpa. She used you to force me into something I never wanted." "She did nothing, I only wanted you to end up with someone responsible, hence I chose her, if I had known you'd be such a jerk…” He let his words trail off and Jeff's face was flushed with anger and he gritted his teeth. “I didn't call you here because of Claire grandpa”. Howard took a deep breath and tried to control his temper. "So what did you want to tell me?" Jeff straightened in his chair. "I'm getting married next month." "To Irene." Howard said flatly and Jeff bristled. "Yes." Jeff's chin lifted slightly. "I wanted you to hear it from me first." "How considerate." The sarcasm dripped from his voice. "You killed your wife and now you're marrying her sister. Do you feel any guilt at all?" "I didn't kill anyone." Jeff's voice rose slightly. "And I won't apologize for moving on with my life. Irene has been there for me through everything. She saved my life years ago and I won't throw her away just because of who you wanted me to marry." Howard stared at him, “I can't believe that I will give birth to a grandchild as stupid as you”. "It's the truth." Jeff's voice was firm. "I nearly drowned when I was seventeen and she pulled me out of the river. I owe her my life." Howard shook his head slowly. "You're a fool." Jeff's face darkened. "Excuse me?" "You heard me. You're a fool, Jeff. A blind, stubborn fool who can't see what's right in front of your face." "What are you talking about?" "Someday you're going to realize the truth." He stood from the table. Jeff stood as well. "What truth? What are you talking about?" But Howard was already walking away, his cane tapping furiously on the ground. "Grandpa, wait!" Jeff called after him. "What truth?" He didn't answer, just kept walking until he pushed through the restaurant doors and out into the cold air. Jeff was marrying the woman who had tried to murder his wife and he believed every lie she'd ever told him and nothing he said would change his mind. He stood on the sidewalk and pulled out his phone, then put it back in his pocket. Let Jeff marry her snake. Let him believe her lies. The truth would come out eventually. It always did.The door closed behind her and she stared at Adrian, “go on and use the bathroom sweetheart”. She instructed and watched him leave.Claire leaned against the door and slid down to the floor. Her whole body was shaking and she couldn't breathe right and her chest hurt so badly she thought something inside had broken. She pressed her hand over her heart and the tears came. They poured down her face and she couldn't stop them and didn't try to because no one was watching and she could finally let herself fall apart. She spent five years trying to get over him and becoming someone new. She even convinced herself that she was over him.And one look at his face had shattered everything. The way he'd looked at her with those grey eyes full of shock and hope and desperation. The way he'd hugged her and whispered "Thank God you're alive" like she was something precious he'd lost. The way his voice had cracked when she pushed him away. She hated him.She hated him for what he'd done to her and
Jeff stood in the middle of the park watching her go. His mind was spinning and his chest felt like someone had reached in and squeezed his heart until it stopped beating. His eyes fell on the little boy walking beside her.The boy was four years old, which meant Claire, if that even was Claire, had gotten pregnant a full year after she died and had moved on and built a whole new life without him."Jeff." Irene's voice cut through his thoughts. "We need to go."He didn't move and couldn't stop staring at the spot where she had gone."That could be her." He whispered almost to himself."Don't be ridiculous." Irene's laugh was too sharp and too loud. "Claire is dead. We buried her five years ago. That woman just happened to look like her."Right, that was where he was confused, he had watched Claire being buried, how can one have such a striking resemblance to another?"You're seeing things because you feel guilty." Irene continued in a softer voice that almost sounded sympathetic. "It'
Claire had sighted Jeff earlier having nice time with his family and her teeth set on edge. He must have been very happy all these years with her gone. it's just her luck that he decided to come to the pack just when she decided to bring Adrian to the park. She was going to get Adrian so that they'll leave when she heard him call her. She stiffened but for just a moment.Jeff reached where she was and turned her around so that she could face him.“Claire, you're alive!” He cried and hugged her . Claire was disgusted, just one moment, he was having fun time with his family and the next moment he was crying over her as if he truly cared. What a prick!Claire pushed him away from her and he almost stumbled.“I'm sorry, I don't know what you are talking about”. She said gracefully.Jeff looked confused for a moment and stared hard at her. True, the person standing before him looks graceful, her manicure perfectly done, her hair was long and straight where Claire's was wavy and always p
"Daddy!" The door burst open and Zane came running in with his arms outstretched and his face lit up with pure joy. "Come play with me and Mommy! We're building a castle!"Jeff looked up from his laptop and his chest tightened because Zane's happiness was so genuine and so innocent and he had no idea what was happening between his parents."Buddy, Daddy's working right now." He tried to keep his voice gentle."But you're always working." Zane's bottom lip pushed out. "Mommy says families are supposed to spend time together."Of course she did."I'll play with you later, okay?" Jeff reached out and ruffled Zane's hair."Promise?" Zane's grey eyes were so hopeful."Promise."Zane ran back out and left the door wide open and Jeff could hear Irene's voice drifting down the hallway."See, sweetie? Daddy's too busy for us right now. But that's okay, we have each other."His jaw clenched and he forced himself to breathe through the rage because she was already starting her campaign and using
Claire's stomach clenched hard as the plane landed. She hadn't been to this part of the world for years and coming back was giving her a kinda sick feeling. She left Adrian in the hotel she had checked in after making him promise that he would stay put.The hospital was massive and busy and she kept her head down and her sunglasses on as she made her way to the emergency department."I'm looking for Howard Anderson." She tried to keep her voice steady but it came out shaky. "He was brought in about an hour ago. Heart attack."The nurse checked her computer. "He's in surgery now. Critical condition. Are you family?""Yes." The lie came easily because she needed it to. "I'm his granddaughter."The nurse's expression softened with sympathy. "Third floor. Surgical waiting area. The doctor will come out when there's news. I'm sorry, it's going to be a long wait."Claire took the elevator up and her heart was pounding so hard she thought everyone could hear it and her hands wouldn't stop tr
The video call connected and Howard's face filled the screen looking older and more tired than she remembered but his eyes lit up the moment he saw Adrian."There's my brilliant boy." Howard's voice was warm and full of love and it made Claire's chest ache with how much she'd missed having family."Great Grandpa! Look what I made!" Adrian climbed onto Claire's lap and held up a complex origami structure that he'd folded himself with his small fingers. "It's a tessellation pattern. I learned it from a video.""That's incredible, Adrian." Howard leaned closer to the camera and his face filled with pride. "You're getting smarter every day. Just like your mother."Claire smiled and felt warmth spread through her chest watching them interact. She had kept in touch with Howard all these years and true to his word, he didn't tell Jeff that she was still alive. He had been the only family she had and he adores Adrian so much."Can you teach me about stocks next time?" Adrian asked with his gr
