ZARA

Yes, right now the tables might have turned but I'm not going to let it last longer. I don't know what she thinks she will get trying to use Matthew to get under my skin.

“You are pathetic,” I said, while looking straight at her. She exhaled, and held unto Matthew like he was her lifesaver.

“Using a man to fight your battles. No wonder a lot of your shareholders sold their shares to me, because….”

“What is she talking about?” Matthew asked her. He knew already, but if he was going to play pretend boyfriend he had to act the part.

“It's nothing,” she said, trying to act tough. “I can take care of it,” I could see her anger in her smile.

Matthew sighed, looked at me then back at her. “Here, sit,” he led her to one of the chairs in the room.

“Look, the reason we are together is to share the burden. I want to know what's going on,” he looked at her like she wasn't the only person in the room. Like his world rotates around her.

There was a time he looked at me like that. My tummy would turn into a playground for butterflies, and our kiss could light up the world.

I coughed slightly, trying to evade such thoughts from going through my mind. He is with Monica now, whether it's pretence or not I don't care. I want nothing to do with him, only to get justice for my father.

“She bribed some of the shareholders into handing over their shares to her,” she cried out.

“I didn't bribe anyone,” I said, boldly. “They handed me their shares on their own will.”

“She bribed some of the shareholders into handing over their shares to her,” Monica cried out.

“I didn’t bribe anyone,” I said boldly, keeping my voice steady. “They handed me their shares of their own free will.”

Matthew’s eyes shifted back to me, questioning. “Why would they do that?”

I folded my arms. “Because they know the truth. They know who really built this firm. And they’re tired of Monica’s games, her lies, her control.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” Monica snapped, standing up again. “This firm has thrived under my leadership!”

“Has it?” I raised an eyebrow. “Because last I checked, half of your senior partners were looking for exits, your biggest client is pulling out, and the interns are calling this place a circus behind your back.”

She gasped. “Lies.”

Matthew looked down, saying nothing. That silence was worse than any insult.

“I didn’t come here to play games,” I said. “I came here to finish what I started.”

Monica shook her head. “You think this is some revenge story? Some fairytale where the fallen daughter rises and everyone claps for her?”

“No,” I said, stepping closer. “This is real life. And in real life, people like you get exposed. Slowly. Publicly. Completely.”

Her lips parted, but she had no words.

Matthew stood, his hands in his pockets. “I think… we should all calm down.”

“I am calm,” I said. “She’s the one lying and crying.”

“You know what, Zara?” Monica hissed, stepping forward again. “You walk in here with your tailored trousers and your dead father’s watch, pretending you’re someone important. But you’re just noise.”

I laughed. Not because it was funny, but because it was pathetic.

“You can’t erase me, Monica,” I said. “No matter how hard you try. I’m here now. And this time, I’m not walking away.”

I turned and picked up the file from the table. “These signatures are real. The transfers are legal. If you want to challenge them, we can go to court. But we both know you won’t win.”

“You’re bluffing,” she whispered.

“Try me,” I said, walking past her and out the door.

As I stepped into the hallway, I could feel their eyes on me—staff, interns, associates. No one said a word, but I saw the shift in their expressions. The respect. The fear. The curiosity.

Let them watch. Let them wonder.

Because this war has only just begun.

And I came prepared to win. I walked out of the office building, and straight to the garage. I need to prepare for my press conference tomorrow.

Nothing is going to stop me from showing the world that, a Taylor is back running Zenith Law Firm.

As I got closer to my car, I could feel someone trying to catch up with me. I held the door knob of my car, and turned.

“What the hell do you think you are doing?” I asked, seeing Matthew in front of me.

“Trying to catch up with you,” he said, with a smile. I looked away instantly, trying very hard not to blush. I can't have him believe he has an effect on me.

“I can see that. I mean why are you here? We can't be seen together, especially not by your girlfriend,” I said to him.

“Don't worry she knows I'm here,” he said. “She thinks I'm trying to talk you out of your press conference tomorrow,” he said, and I scoffed.

“And she thinks you can?” I asked him.

“She's desperate. At every turn right now, she is losing, and will do anything to win. Even if that means hiding her jealousy,” he said, and looked up. I followed his eyes, and I saw a camera.

Of course she is watching. “But she can't hear us. We can speak freely,” he continued.

“We have nothing to talk about,” I said, and turned to my car.

“Hear me out, Zara,” he said, and I turned. “What?”

Matthew took a deep breath. “I know you don’t trust me. And maybe I deserve that. But I’m not here to fight you, Zara. I’m here to help you.”

I stared at him. Help me? After everything?

I crossed my arms. “I don’t need saving, Matthew. Not from you. Not from anyone.”

He stepped closer, his voice softer now. “I know you don’t. You’ve always been strong. But that doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone.”

I took a step towards him, “I agreed to work with you because of Gabriel, and the others. But don't think for a second that I'm alone.”

Matthew’s eyes searched mine like he was trying to find the old version of me, the one who used to smile at him without thinking, the one who trusted him without doubt.

“I think we are done here,” I said, walked back to my car, and got in.

He walked towards my car, and stood feet's away. But I could hear him. “How's your daughter?” He asked, and my heart skipped a bit.

I didn't let him see the fear on my face, I hit the patal and drove off instantly.

How does he know about Hazel? I thought I lost him the other day when he tried to follow me.

“Damnit!” I slammed my fist against the steering wheel.

ZARAJust for a second, just for a tiny second I let myself feel something I thought I buried years ago, but I can't feel like this again. Not right now.I shoved him away, my breath ragged. My lipstick smeared. My heart was racing.“No,” I said, stepping back. “This can’t happen.”“You kissed me back,” he said, voice dark and proud.“That was a mistake.”He took a deep breath, ran a hand through his hair. “No, Zara. That was the truth.”Suddenly the door burst open, and Vic walked in. “Everything okay?” She asked, holding a file in her hands. She looked between us- at my flushed face, at Matthew's guilty smirk, at our closeness.“Everything is fine,” Matthew spoke before I could. “I was just leaving,” he said, and walked out immediately.Vic watched him as he walked out then turned to look at me with confusion written all over her face.“What did I miss?” She asked, and I rolled my eyes.“Nothing,” I said, taking the file from her. “This is the presentation of our pro Bono policy?”

ZARALast night has been replaying in my head all day. I tried to stay focused in the office but Hazel's question, and me almost spilling the beans kept on ravaging my mind.I have tried numerous ways to push back the thoughts but nothing seems to work. I have to be focused today, I need to be focused today. I'm presenting the first part of my new policy to the shareholders today, and I need to nail it. My eyes drifted to my empty desk. I don't even have a picture of Hazel on it. I can expose her for Monica, and her father to use as bait for me.My phone's ringtone brought me back to reality. I checked on who the caller was, but it was an unregistered number. But something about it looked familiar. In a second I went through my purse looking for the card Maria had given to me last night. I got it out, and checked both numbers. It was exactly the same, Matthew was calling me. It felt like the whole place stood still. What am I going to say?“Sorry, I wanted to tell you last night

ZARA“Thank you for coming, Maria. I'm glad you get to meet Vic,” I said as we both walked towards the kitchen counter.“Yeah, she seems nice, and she's a darling with Hazel,” She said with a smile. “Besides I didn't want to stay waiting for Daniel,” she said, and rolled her eyes.“What was that?” I asked her.“He is out with Matthew, you know how they can be sometimes,” she said, and we both laughed.“Yeah, I remember,” I said, and she chuckled. “Zara,” I heard my name. I looked up to see Vic with Hazel. “Is anything wrong?” I asked, looking at both Hazel, and Vic.“She has a question she wants to ask you,” Vic said, touched my shoulder slightly, and walked towards Maria.“What's going on?” I asked as I squatted, facing her.“Who is my Daddy, Mama?” She asked, and my heart dropped.I froze.Hazel looked up at me with her big brown eyes—so full of trust, so full of hope—and I had no idea what to say. My lips parted, but no sound came out.My heart pounded so hard I could hear it in

MATTHEWI walked into one of the exotic clubs in the city with my shades on. The music was loud, the lights low, and the scent of perfume and expensive whiskey filled the air. I didn’t come here for fun. I came here for information. The bartender gave me a flirty smile, I ignored her, but still walked towards the bar. “A shot of tequila, please,” I said to her, and rested on the bar table.“Thought you were not going to make it,” I turned, and faced my friend Daniel. “Almost didn't,” we acted like we didn't know each other. “Want to tell me the reason?” He asked, and I scoffed.“A lot of reasons. It's getting harder trying to hide this from Monica,” I said, and he faced me.“Really, is that really your reason?” He asked, “have seen you create a lie with your eyes closed,” he said, and I laughed. The bartender brought the tequila, and I drowned it down my throat.I slammed the empty shot glass back on the counter, letting the heat of the tequila burn down my throat. It didn’t do muc

ZARA“I haven't seen you in years, it's really good to see you,” Howard said again, and I scoffed.“I can't say the feeling is mutual,” I said, and he raised his hands playful. “That's fine, I don't expect it to be,” he said, as he walked around the office.“Then what are you doing here, Mr. Dewitt?” I asked, trying to sound professional, despite my anger.“Oh please, Howard,” he said. “I just came to congratulate the firm's newest partner. I love having new people onboard,” he said with a smirk.“Except,” I took a step deeper into the office. “I'm not someone new, and there is nothing to love because you don't work here anymore,” I said without flinching. He sighed, and laughed. “Oh you remind me of your parents. They had such fire in them,” he said.“Of course they did. I'm their daughter after all,” I said with my head tilted to the side.“Well, except for the fact that they are dead, and I'm the one still alive. I guess fire doesn't mean intelligence,” he said. I turned my hands

ZARAI continued to try to loosen up the bow at the back of my dress, but my stylist kept tightening it the more.Somewhere Inside of me I knew it wasn't the bow. It's the feeling I have been having ever since Matthew asked me about Hazel.“Is that okay?” The stylist asked, and I sighed.“It's perfect,” Vic said, and I rolled my eyes. “Of course you think it's perfect,” I said to her. “I feel like a circus freak,” I said, and she gasped playfully. Then looks at me with a serious face.“I know you are anxious about Hazel being in school for the first time today, and about the comment Matthew made,” she said, and I groaned.“You know me too well,” I said. “Of course I do,” she continued her numerous touch ups on my face. “But you have to handle it. You provided round the clock security, and everything she will ever need. That girl is the happiest in the whole world. You made that happen, not Matthew but you,” she said, and I smiled. Vic always finds a way to lift up my spirit.“We are
