CARRIE

I stood in front of the mirror in my bedroom, tightening the belt of my beige trench coat over my black fitted dress. My reflection looked composed, put-together, every strand of my long brown hair curled exactly where I wanted it. But beneath all that surface perfection, a familiar heaviness sat quietly in my chest.

A full day to myself. I’d promised Ellen and Laura, her best friend I’d commit to it. I’d said the words easily but following through felt like trying to pull myself out of quicksand.

Then I heard it; a soft, bubbling giggle from the living room.

I picked my bag and walked out into the living room, and there he was. Leo sat in the middle of his play mat, surrounded by plush toys, smiling up at me like I was his whole world. My heart clenched.

“Hi, my little sunshine,” I whispered, crouching beside him. He let out another happy coo, reaching for my face this time.

His tiny fingers brushed my cheek and I kissed his forehead.

“Mommy’s going out for a little while, sw

SHANE By weekend my anger had burned itself out like a dying flame, leaving nothing but ashes behind. No rage. No fury. Just guilt; thick, suffocating, inescapable guilt. Making every breath feel heavy.I sat in the private corner of the club on Saturday night with Liam, nursing a drink that tasted like nothing. The lights were dim, the music low, the hum of conversations distant. Liam sat across from me, swirling the whiskey in his glass. He’d been talking; trying, at least but I had been giving him nothing but monotone grunts and clipped replies. I couldn’t even blame him for sounding irritated.“Shane,” he said finally, leaning forward, “what do you want to do now?”I stared at my half-empty glass. My hand felt heavy as I set it on the table. The ice clinked softly, like punctuation.“I need to look for Carrie,” I said, my voice low but steady. “I must find her.”Liam’s eyes narrowed with something between understanding and relief.“I will call the new PI I’m using now,” I added.

CARRIE It was Thursday afternoon, I sat in front of my desktop in the spare room I used as my home office. I had been working from home since Tuesday because Leo wasn’t feeling well. It wasn’t anything serious, just a mild ear infection. Still, the tiny whimpers he made whenever he tugged at his ear were enough to turn me into a nervous wreck.I leaned back in my seat, rubbed my temples. And looked around. The room was scattered with open files, sticky notes, my laptop, and a half-finished cup of chamomile tea in front of me.It was just past two in the afternoon, and I desperately needed a break. My eyes were burning from staring at the screen, and the Excel sheet in front of me had started swimming.I sighed and stood up, stretching my back. “Enough for now,” I muttered to myself. All morning, I’d been switching between work mode and mom mode, and the mental split was starting to catch up with me. I padded across the hall toward Leo’s room, softening my steps automatically, as if t

SHANE The drive home felt like a slow-motion car crash I couldn’t escape. My hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that my knuckles turned white. Nathaniel’s confession replayed in my head like a broken tape, each word cutting into me again and again. The deception. The manipulation. The cruelty. Everything he’d said about Carrie, about Cathy…and the money.I felt sick.Physically sick.My chest burned with something I couldn’t name, rage, guilt, disbelief, grief. I didn’t know which one was stronger. I didn’t even know which one I wanted to feel. All I knew was that I couldn’t breathe right.Carrie was innocent. The thought stabbed through me and left me gasping. She’d been drugged. Set up. Manipulated into the mess that spun our lives out of control. Nathaniel had orchestrated it like a puppet master, and I…stupid, blind, arrogant, I had believed it. I hadn’t even asked enough questions. I hadn’t looked deeper. I’d been so quick to judge, so quick to doubt her, so quick to th

SHANE His eyes fluttered open after a long moment, cloudy, wet, unfocused for a second before they sharpened just enough to find me.“Shane…” His voice cracked, thin like stretched paper.“Hey,” I murmured. He attempted to push himself upright, but his arms trembled pathetically. I moved closer and slipped an arm behind his shoulders, supporting his frail weight. He felt frighteningly light. Carefully, I propped him up and adjusted the pillows, layering them to hold him at an angle that wouldn’t strain his breathing. He sagged against them, exhausted just from sitting.“Is that better?” I asked. He nodded weakly, then reached for my hand. His grip was barely there, more symbolic than physical.“Shane… I have a confession to make.”My heart paused mid-beat.“Uncle Nate…”He lifted a hand, cutting me off. “No. Please. I have to say this while I still can.”He swallowed, wincing. “And before you… hate me more than you likely already do.”My brows pulled together. “You're not making sen

SHANE By the time I finally stepped out of my last meeting, the sky outside my office windows had already darkened into a deep navy blue outside. Tuesdays were never supposed to be this long, but lately everything felt stretched; my patience, my energy, my sense of balance.I powered down my computer, slipped into my jacket, and was just reaching for the light switch when my phone vibrated against the desk. I almost ignored it, thinking it was another late-night email ping or some client who couldn’t respect normal business hours. Then I saw the name.Nathaniel.My hand froze. We hadn’t spoken, truly spoken since the day he retired from Blackwood Marketing. The silence between us had grown and thickened over time. I told myself that giving him space was the most dignified thing to do.Maybe it was cowardice instead.I answered on the third ring.“Uncle Nate?”For a moment, all I heard was a weak exhale. Then a voice thin, strained, barely recognizable.“Shane.”I straightened, alarm
