The entire fourth floor had been knocked through and remodelled into Alexander’s private workroom and study.

On the western wall stood an ebony bookshelf, its shelves lined with books arranged with almost obsessive precision—finance, architecture, design, history. Everything stood in quiet order. The eastern side of the room was his workspace: film reels stacked neatly, architectural models displayed under soft lighting, fabric swatches draped with deliberate care. Nothing here was accidental. Nothing was out of place.

Alexander crossed the room, selected a vinyl record from the shelf, and placed it onto the turntable.

With a soft click, the needle dropped.

Music spilled into the air—slow, languid, a mulberry jazz tune sung by a woman with a husky, unhurried voice. The melody curled lazily around the room, unbothered by time.

Alexander leaned back against the workbench, arms folded loosely across his chest, eyes lowered as he waited.

Minutes passed.

Then—

Footsteps.

In front of the stables, the air carried the clean, earthy scent of hay and warm sunlight.Marcello stood a little too close, eyes bright with excitement, watching as the stable hands carefully bathed the white horse. Water trickled down the animal’s sleek coat, glinting like silver as it pooled at its hooves.“Cello—don’t stand behind it!” Ava immediately cautioned, her voice sharp with instinct. She stepped forward and gently drew him back by the shoulder. “If you approach a horse from behind, it may think you’re a threat.”The little one froze, then nodded solemnly, taking her words to heart.Guiding him by the hand, Ava led him around to the front of a black horse tethered nearby. Its coat gleamed like polished obsidian beneath the sun, muscles shifting subtly beneath its skin as it tossed its head.Ava picked up a freshly washed apple from a wooden crate and placed it into Marcello’s small palm. “Here. You can make friends—but hold it firmly,

Sunlight streamed through the oval window, spilling across the cabin in a wash of warm gold. It fell neatly over Alexander and Marcello—one tall and composed, the other small and bright-eyed—casting their profiles in the same hue, as though nature itself were quietly insisting on their resemblance. For a fleeting moment, the scene looked almost domestic.Too domestic.Ava’s fingers tightened beneath the blanket. She turned her face away and pulled the fabric higher, shielding her eyes. She had half-expected Alexander to retreat after last night—cool, distant, guarded with Marcello. Yet here he was, patient and attentive, letting the little boy chatter endlessly, indulging every question with a calm she rarely saw in him.So much for distance.Let him enjoy it, she told herself firmly. It’s only a short flight. An hour or so won’t change anything. She closed her eyes again, surrendering to the gentle hum of the engines and the faint murmur of voices, intending to rest just a little lon

The next morning unfolded exactly as planned—at least on the surface.Ava drove Marcello to the airport, her expression calm, composed, betraying none of the storm from the night before. In the VIP lounge, they found Alexander already seated on the leather sofa, his posture impeccable as ever, though his face betrayed the fatigue he couldn’t hide.Under the soft morning light filtering through the tall windows, his usually sharp blue eyes were rimmed with red, the faint shadow of sleeplessness beneath them. His tailored navy suit only made the exhaustion more striking, a contrast between control and collapse.“Uncle Vanderbilt, good morning!”Marcello trotted forward with a bright grin, as cheerful as ever.Alexander looked up. For a moment, his gaze softened, but it vanished as quickly as it came, replaced by the cold, distant composure that had defined him since yesterday.Ava’s pulse tightened. She walked over swiftly and took her son’s hand. “Cello, Mr. Vanderbilt looks like he ha

Ava’s patience finally snapped. She kicked out, fast and hard — but Alexander dodged backward. His hip caught the edge of the table, sending the half-filled wine glass shuddering violently. Burgundy liquid sloshed over the rim, and the bottle rolled, teetering toward the edge.“Damn it!” she hissed, lunging to save it.Before she could steady herself, his hands closed over her shoulders, spinning her around. With a single, unhurried motion, he lifted her onto the edge of the dining table as though she weighed nothing.“Alexander!” she snapped, raising the bottle like a weapon. “This is your last warning. If you dare touch me again, I’ll—”Her threat broke off as he reached up, pried her fingers from the glass, and pressed his lips to her cheek — a brief, maddening brush of heat.“Stop it!” She turned her head sharply, but his hand came up, firm against her chin, holding her still. Then his mouth found hers. Her breath caught in her throat, fury and something else tangling inside her c

Ava took out her wallet and withdrew several crisp ten-pound notes, handing them to the young attendant at the entertainment zone. Her tone was calm but sincere.“I’m terribly sorry — this is for any damage that might’ve been caused earlier. My son will apologise as well. Cello?”The little boy, still smelling faintly of paint, bowed his head obediently. “Auntie, I’m sorry.”The young woman’s eyes widened. “Oh—no, no, please don’t! It wasn’t his fault. Nothing’s broken, and the mess is already cleaned up…”Everyone had seen how things started. It was clear the blond boy had been the troublemaker, and the woman and her son had been the ones wronged. The staff member looked genuinely flustered, her cheeks pink. But Ava pressed the money into her hands regardless. “Keep it. Please just make sure everything’s tidied. Thank you — and sorry again for the trouble.”Before the girl could protest further, Ava clasped Marcello’s hand, collected their belongings, and slipped out of the curious c
