When Serena arrived back at the Morales family villa, she froze at the sight that greeted her.

Alfonso was home.

For a moment, she thought she was imagining it. But there he was — seated at the long dining table, a thick stack of documents spread out before him. His once-dark hair had turned almost entirely grey, his posture slouched, his face lined and weary. He looked like a man who had aged ten years in the span of a week.

He must have discharged himself without a word. The hospital had clearly tried to keep him, but they’d also kept something else from him — his terminal liver cancer. They probably thought it would be cruel to tell a man in his state the truth.

Serena’s heart ached at the sight of him.

Alfonso now wore a pair of reading glasses, squinting down at the contract in front of him, coughing every few minutes as his frail body struggled to keep up. Each shallow breath, each racking cough, felt heavier in the silence of the room.

She watched as he slowly turned page after page, combing through the Morales Group’s contract with PW Group, desperate to find some loophole. But even after reading it over and over, the outcome was clear — the company was already drowning. It was too late.

Finally, he sighed, setting the papers down, his hand trembling. It was then he noticed Serena standing nearby.

He blinked, as though surprised to see her there. Neither of them spoke.

She didn’t move. Just a little while ago, this proud man could walk unaided. Now, even leaning on a cane seemed to exhaust him. She opened her mouth to say something, but the words wouldn’t come.

Alfonso looked at her for a long, quiet moment. Then, with effort, he slumped down into the chair and set his cane aside, a wave of defeat in his every motion.

Wrinkles gathered around his eyes, making him look far older than his sixty-three years. The contrast of his newly grey hair only made it worse, and Serena found herself hesitating to meet his gaze.

“Serena,” he rasped, his voice uneven. “The Morales family… it’s finished.”

His shoulders trembled slightly. “I’m sorry, there’s nothing left. Nothing to leave you.”

They had sold off nearly everything — the company, the assets — just to keep creditors from tearing them apart. There wasn’t a legacy left to pass down.

Serena’s throat tightened. She stepped forward and noticed Rex curled loyally at Alfonso’s feet, unwilling to leave him.

She sat down beside him.

Alfonso’s hands trembled as he placed the last document on the table, his eyes distant.

“A lifetime… a lifetime of building, and for what? For it to end like this…” he muttered bitterly.

Serena lowered her lashes, her voice gentle but firm.

“Dad, it’s time you visited Mom’s grave. It’s been years.”

Alfonso flinched. His lips twitched. For a long moment, he said nothing. Then quietly, “I’ll go tomorrow.”

But Serena knew better. In his condition, a few hours’ drive was too much. And time was something he no longer had.

She looked at him, remembering the doctor’s words — one year left, maybe less. And still, he was here, worrying over contracts and debts when his body was giving out.

Alfonso eventually spoke again, his tone cautious, almost pleading.

“Serena… the Morales Group is falling apart. Don’t… don’t be foolish and divorce Alexander. If you do, you’ll have nothing left.”

He swallowed hard. “Mr. Vanderbilt Sr. likes you. As long as you stay as Alexander’s wife, no one will push you out. I don’t want you ending up alone… mistreated.”

He knew it wouldn’t be long before he was gone.

Serena bit down on the lump in her throat. She hated this conversation, hated how he kept bringing up Alexander as though that cold, ruthless man was a lifeline she could depend on.

“I’ve already had the maids disinfect the house,” she said quietly, trying to change the subject. **“Araminta’s things have been cleared out. I’ll handle the company’s affairs.”

Alfonso’s fingers shook.

“You’re not… going to Cornelius, are you?” he asked hoarsely. “Even if he likes you, he won’t hand you a billion dollars. Don’t do anything foolish. It’ll only ruin his opinion of you.”

Before she could answer, a violent cough wracked Alfonso’s frail frame, dark blood staining his lips.

“Dad!” Serena gasped, quickly grabbing a tissue and pressing it to his mouth. “It’s not Mr. Vanderbilt Sr… it’s… it’s Alexander. He promised he’d fix this.”

She wiped the blood away, her hands trembling.

“Please, Dad… don’t worry about the company anymore.”

Alfonso let out a weak, bitter laugh.

“Alexander? That man doesn’t care about you, Serena. If he did, none of this would’ve happened. He wouldn’t have let things get this bad for the Morales family.”

He coughed again, exhausted. His chest rose and fell heavily as he leaned back against the sofa, his gaze dull.

“Alexander Vanderbilt is a heartless man,” Alfonso murmured. “You can rely on him… but never love him. I’ve seen enough in my life to know — men with that kind of power don’t have hearts.”

Serena stayed silent, her emotions warring inside her. He wasn’t wrong.

“Let me take you back to the hospital,” she said softly. “We can’t waste time. The issue with PW Group will be resolved soon.”

Alfonso’s gaze lingered on her face, skeptical, but too weak to argue. In his eyes, he could see it clearly now — the Serena who had once clung to him, crying for her mother, was gone.

She didn’t need him anymore.

Only now did he truly realize it.

And it hurt.

---

After everything, Serena knew Alfonso couldn’t hold out any longer. His body was failing, and his spirit wasn’t far behind. She instructed the driver to take him back to the hospital — it was the only place that could give him even a sliver of care.

But barely half an hour later, her phone rang.

“Miss Morales,” the driver’s voice was tight, panicked. “It’s bad. People from PW Group came to the hospital… they made a scene. Mr. Morales… he—he was taken to the emergency room again.”

Serena’s heart dropped.

“What happened?”

“They started shouting about Araminta’s affair… kept mocking him, saying he should get a DNA test for Valentina. They wouldn’t stop. Mr. Morales—he… he started vomiting blood. A lot of it. The doctors rushed him into emergency.”

For a moment, Serena’s hand went numb around her phone.

PW Group had gone too far.

They weren’t just after money anymore. They wanted to crush what was left of the Morales family’s pride, drag them through the filth and leave nothing standing.

Anger, helplessness, and fear tangled in her chest like a knot she couldn’t loosen.

She grabbed her keys and bolted for the car, but as she reached the Morales family gates, several black SUVs blocked the driveway, skidding to a stop in front of her.

The doors flew open, and a hulking man stepped out. His face was twisted into a mocking sneer.

“Miss Morales,” he barked, loud enough for the neighbors to hear, “if you want to see your dear old dad, you’ll have to spend a few nights with Mr. Kuzmin.”

Serena’s stomach turned, her blood boiling with rage. She gripped the steering wheel so hard her knuckles turned white.

Then her phone rang again — an unfamiliar number.

She didn’t need to guess.

Ryan Kuzmin.

The name itself made her sick.

Without hesitation, she ignored it and did the only thing left she could — she called Alexander.

The phone rang once.

And then… he hung up.

Tears stung her eyes, not from sadness but frustration. Desperation.

There was no one else.

No one else who could untangle this disaster. No one who could match PW Group’s influence, who could make them back down. And time — her father’s time — was slipping away like sand through her fingers.

Even if it meant sacrificing her pride. Even if it meant lowering herself until her dignity was in tatters.

At least Alexander could help.

And right now, that was all that mattered.

Serena took a shaking breath, her heart pounding.

She would fight for her father.

No matter what it cost.

Hugo Beaumont was known for many things—his unshakable good mood, his decadent lifestyle, and his flair for drama, both onscreen and off. A fixture in the entertainment world, he lived like every night was a red-carpet premiere. At that moment, he had just seen off a lover and was lazily leaning against the balcony railing of his high-rise penthouse, a cigarette smoldering between his fingers, the city lights flickering like stars beneath him. When his phone buzzed with a call from Alexander at 3 a.m., Hugo blinked, slightly amused. This hour usually meant one of two things: trouble—or post-coital confusion. And knowing Alexander, it had to be the latter. A smirk curled at the corners of his lips.“Xander,” he drawled, the cigarette dangling from his mouth.Alexander sat on the edge of a sleek leather armchair in the hotel’s dimly lit living room, his elbows on his knees, one hand loosely gripping his phone. His shirt was still undone, and his hair was damp from the cold shower that h

When Ava arrived, the first thing she saw was a half-finished oil painting clamped delicately on an easel, set before the tall floor-to-ceiling windows. The moonlight spilled in, casting a soft, silver glow over the strokes of paint. Her eyes recognized the style instantly. It was her teacher’s work—Mr. Remmington."Mr. Vanderbilt?" she called out, her voice echoing softly through the vast hotel suite. The faint sound of water running in the bathroom came to a stop. Moments later, Alexander stepped out, dressed in black silk pajamas, a towel in hand as he casually dried his damp hair. Droplets clung to his collarbone, glinting like tiny crystals.“Hugo gave me this,” he said, nodding toward the painting. “Apparently Remmington had to leave halfway through. Can you finish it?”Ava didn’t answer right away. She stepped closer to the canvas, her gaze tracing the bold, unfinished strokes, the emotion still hang

It was nearly 2 a.m. when Serena finally returned to the Upper West Side.As she passed by the hallway mirror, her reflection caught her by surprise. Her face was streaked with soot, her hair tangled and dulled with ash. The once-crisp suit she wore was wrinkled and smudged, having been stuffed into a sack during her abduction. She looked like a shadow of herself—haunted, dirty, and worn down to the bone.Without turning on the main lights, she moved wearily through the quiet apartment. The silence was almost surreal, too perfect after the chaos of the night. In the bathroom, steam billowed gently as she stepped into the hot shower. For a long time, she simply stood there under the water, letting it scald her skin and wash away the grime and horror clinging to her body. When she finally emerged, wrapped in her softest pajamas, her limbs felt like lead. The moment she hit the bed, she sank into the mattress and drifted into sleep—deep, dreamless, and unshakable. For once, her exhaustio

Serena stayed late at the office that evening, her desk still scattered with reports and forecasts. Just as she reached for her bag to finally head home, the door creaked open—and in stepped Mark Robinson.“Miss Morales,” he said with a tight smile, placing a thick stack of documents on her desk, “these are the resignation papers from a few of us. Thought I’d bring them to you directly.”Serena arched a brow, mildly surprised. So they’d decided to bow out after all. Her tone softened slightly, laced with professionalism. “You’ll receive every penny you’re owed. I’ll make sure of it.”Mark stood close beside her as she began reviewing the documents, flipping through the pages with her usual diligence. But something felt off—the paperwork was a mess, riddled with sloppy signatures and vague phrasing. She was just about to raise a question when an acrid, chemical odor hit her. Her vision blurred. The words on the paper wavered.Behind her, Mark gave a discre

When Valentina returned to the Morales family villa, the afternoon sun was beginning to dip behind the estate’s high hedges, casting long shadows over the stone pathway. A man in a tailored suit waited patiently in the grand foyer—a lawyer, holding a black briefcase and a small envelope in hand."Miss Morales," he said, his tone neutral and professional. "I’ve been instructed by Mr. Alfonso Morales to inform you of the contents of his final will and testament."Valentina paused, sensing something ominous in his tone. The lawyer handed her a sleek black card. “This card contains thirty million dollars,” he explained. “Mr. Morales stipulated that you are to leave New York within forty-eight hours. If you fail to do so, the account will be frozen, and you’ll lose access to the funds permanently.”Valentina blinked, certain she’d misheard. “What?” Her voice trembled. The lawyer continued calmly, “In accordance with Mr. Morales’s will, all shares of the Morales Group have been transferred

After stepping out of the shower, Ava checked her phone with a quiet sense of dread. Rachel hadn’t responded yet, and her unease began to mount. But just as she wrapped herself in a towel, a voice message finally popped through—Rachel’s voice, low and a little breathless.“Ava, we’re good... and sexually compatible.”Ava blinked, her mouth twitching in disbelief. Without replying, she tossed her phone onto the bed. It had probably all been a misunderstanding. Or... not.Meanwhile, in a cramped but tidy 300-square-foot apartment across town, Rachel sat on the edge of the bed, her damp hair clinging to her neck. Tom emerged from the bathroom, a towel slung low around his waist, and crossed the room to grab the hairdryer. He gently began drying her hair.Rachel had grown up surrounded by luxury, but she’d learned to endure discomfort for Tom’s sake. And in moments like this, with him taking care of her so intimately, she felt it was worth it.Tom’s fingers lingered on a strand of her hai

In New York, there had never been a shortage of women eager to sleep with Alexander Vanderbilt. Yet somehow, Ava Alvarez was the only one who ever complained—silently—that he wanted her too often. She turned her head away now, resisting—not with words, but with the subtle stillness of her posture.Unbothered, Alexander shrugged off his suit jacket. He laid it down carefully on the polished, high-gloss ceramic tiles, the fabric landing softly like silk against stone. Then, without asking, he lifted her and set her down upon it.This time, Ava didn’t resist.Maybe it was exhaustion. Maybe it was resignation. Or maybe—just maybe—it was the quiet realization that she had just used his name to secure a crucial deal with Quinton Darby. And a small part of her felt indebted.Sensing her surrender, Alexander leaned in, and she met him halfway. They kissed—deeply, breathlessly. Quinton had gone all out this time, reserving an upscale restaurant known for hosting dignitaries and elite clientele—where even getting a table required connections and notice weeks in advance. When Ava entered, a flicker of admiration immediately lit up in Quinton’s eyes.“Ava, you’re getting more and more beautiful,” he said, rising from his chair with a gentleman’s ease. The private room was elegantly decorated, a blend of minimalism and classic luxury. Polished wood paneling, soft gold lighting, and a floral centerpiece lent a serene ambiance to the space. The table was already set with delicate porcelain plates and engraved silver cutlery. The morning sun streamed through the tall windows of the Upper West Side apartment as Ava buttoned up her blazer, preparing to head to the Morales family company. Just as she reached for the doorknob, the bell rang. When she opened the door, a sharply dressed man stood outside, briefcase in hand and a solemn expression on his face.It was Alfonso’s lawyer.Ava’s chest tightened. For a moment, she wondered if she'd unknowingly fallen into some kind of legal trouble. They sat across from each other in the living room, the morning light casting quiet patterns on the hardwood floor. The lawyer wasted no time delivering the message Alfonso had entrusted him with.“Mr. Morales asked me to convey his apologies,” he began gently. “He said he was too emotional yesterday, and he deeply regrets the unreasonable request he made. He also mentioned that he will remain at the Morales residence to rest and recover. You don’t need to visit him anymore.”Ava’s heart began to throb as the lawyer continu
