Chapter 3

Author: Cool Husky
Just then, Harry dropped a message in the family group chat, asking everyone to come to Mercy Memorial Hospital to help out. Gerald's blood type was too rare, though, so no one in the family had a matching type.

Everyone came rushing to the hospital the moment they found out Gerald had been hospitalized after the car accident.

Upon seeing just a few of us standing outside the ER, Jessie Dawson, Harry's sister, asked, "Where's Gemma?"

I looked distressed as I replied, "Gemma went off to watch a play with Brian. She thinks I'm lying and insists I made all this up to trick her into coming back, so she refuses to come to the hospital…"

Jessie flew into a rage upon hearing that. "Has she lost her mind? Does she not know what's more important right now?"

"Don't bring up that worthless child!" Harry was shaking with rage as he took out his blood pressure medication and swallowed a pill. "We're disowning Gemma!"

Our immediate priority at that moment was to save Gerald, so everyone quickly posted the emergency appeal online.

It was then that the nurse rushed over and exclaimed, "We're running out of time! The patient is in critical condition! Do we have the blood yet?"

I instantly panicked. Doreen suddenly passed out after struggling to catch her breath, causing everyone on the scene to become frantic again.

Tricia kept calling people nonstop, while someone from the community group chat was making his way over. "Hang on! I'm coming!"

Just then, the doctor walked out of the ER and shook his head. "I'm sorry, but we weren't able to save the patient. We did everything we could."

The man who had just arrived to donate blood went limp and fell to the ground when he heard the news.

Doreen let out a piercing scream, while Harry staggered back a couple of steps before collapsing too.

Everyone in the family was thrown into chaos again.

I stared at my phone, a sense of dread settling over me.

Gerald's face was deathly pale as he lay on the hospital bed, the white sheet covering his abdomen completely soaked in blood.

Doreen lunged forward and hugged his body tightly the moment the sheet was pulled over his face, refusing to let go.

Everyone around broke down in tears as well.

Tricia walked toward me with a deathly pale face, her lips quivering as she managed to whisper, "I'm sorry..."

"You can save your apology, Tricia. I'll be filing a complaint and following it through to the end!" I barked.

Tricia looked utterly pale with distress, while I led the family in pulling Doreen to the side.

Harry finally broke down in tears as the doctor filled out the death certificate for Gerald.

Isaac Dawson, Harry's brother, put his arm around Harry's shoulders and snarled with bloodshot eyes. "We should just throw Gemma out of the family and never let her back in! She actually ignored Gerald's situation and caused this mess!"

I shook my head, feeling defeated. "It's all my fault. I warned her to stay away from Brian, but she brushed me off and thought I was being a nuisance."

Jessie walked up to me and said, "It's not your fault, Simon. Gemma's judgment is totally clouded at the moment! We've always known what Brian is like, which is why we didn't agree to their marriage back then, and look at him now—he's actively being the homewrecker!"

Everyone in the family was fuming with rage, while I knew with absolute clarity that I didn't want Gemma in my life anymore.

It wasn't until two hours later that Gemma called me, seemingly having unblocked me. She sounded insufferably smug as she asked, "What's the matter, Simon? Did your little performance run its course?"

I calmly put the call on speaker and said, "If you have the time, come home and say your final goodbye to Gerald."

"Cut the crap and stop saying that about Gerald!"

"I'm not making this up! You'd better remember that you're the one who caused his death, Gemma!"

Isaac roared, "You ungrateful wretch! You'd better come back right now; otherwise, I'll bring people over to break your damn legs!"

Gemma was caught off guard after hearing that harsh reprimand, leaving her silent for a few seconds.

She reined in her irritation and snapped, "You guys are clearly ganging up on me! What's the point of me going back even if Gerald dies? I'm not a doctor; I can't save him! I'm telling you, Simon—I'm not going back today!"

Gemma hung up again, leaving me feeling totally numb inside.

I inwardly said to myself, "I had already given you a chance, Gemma…"

I saw to it that Gerald was properly dressed for his final rest, then sent a message to Gemma. "Gerald's funeral is in three days. It's up to you whether you show up or not, Gemma."

Gemma made a beeline straight for me. "You're going to help me, right, Simon? I'm really short on money right now, so could you please spare me some? "I mean, you walked away with almost everything in the divorce, and now I've lost all the remaining money because of Brian. Can you lend me 30,000 dollars, Simon?"Upon hearing that, I furrowed my brow, then burst out laughing. "Do you really think you deserve my help, Gemma?" Gemma froze when she heard that.I raised my hand and slapped her hard across the face twice.Gemma froze on the spot, completely dumbfounded. She snapped out of it after quite some time and asked shamelessly, "Do you feel better now? If you are, please lend me the money, Simon!"I found the irony hilarious. "I was honestly glad your father was behind the wheel when the accident happened, Gemma; otherwise, I would have been the one blamed for Gerald getting hurt. You probably would've been the one asking for a divorce, making it easier for you to marry Brian

Queenie clenched her fists and snarled, "If I ever find out who pulled this off, I swear I'm going to make them pay!"I said, "I can't think of anyone else who would do this besides Brian."Queenie gritted her teeth after hearing that. "Why did you choose divorce and willingly step aside to let Brian take your place beside Gemma, then?"I chuckled wryly. "What else was I supposed to do? Gemma refused to believe me and ended up indirectly causing Gerald's death. I had no reason to stay in that family after that. "She's also pregnant with Brian's baby. She cheated on me during our marriage, and I was disgusted by her. I had no interest in being with such a woman."You shouldn't throw your own life away for revenge, Queenie. Those lowlifes aren't worth the sacrifice!"I saw right through her intentions, and if I could save her from making such fatal mistakes, I was going to try my best.Queenie nodded and rose to leave.I leaned back in my chair, thinking it over in silence. If B

In the end, the online user who posted the photo expressed their regret in the comment section. "I take it back! I can't believe the couple I used to envy turned out to be a pair of horrible people! I feel so bad for her brother! I mean, he could have been saved! I heard that his wife was abroad, and by the time she returned, he was already gone!"I sat at home watching it all play out, a smirk creeping onto my face. I thought this was nothing compared to everything I had suffered in my past life. I posted everything that had happened that day and kept them both on the trending list for three straight days.Gemma finally couldn't take it anymore and called me. "I'm not going to try to justify what I did, but did you have to go this far, Simon? Do you want to destroy me? Do you know how many people are trashing me online right now? "I can't even go home since Mom and Dad kicked me out. I got fired from my job as well. You're too ruthless, Simon!"I remained completely unfazed. "Y

Doreen was rendered speechless by what I said. She attempted to speak up again, but I cut her off coldly."Please just drop it, Mrs. Dawson. Gemma is on board with this, and so am I. You can go back to being one big happy family once the divorce is finalized. You will have plenty to celebrate once Gemma gives birth to her baby."Doreen was at a loss for words.I left right away, not giving her a chance to speak. I then called Gemma and said, "You'd better tell your mother to stay away from me from now on, Gemma. I don't want to see any of the Dawsons ever again! If there's another time, I won't hold back from ruining your reputation!"I hung up before Gemma got a chance to speak.Ultimately, the divorce arrangement between Gemma and me incurred the displeasure of the Dawson family. Brian went straight to the house after getting discharged from the hospital, but when he got there, he was informed that the property had been sold. He flew into a rage and insisted that Gemma renegot

Brian passed out on the day Gerald was buried. Gemma panicked and quickly took him to the hospital. They clung to each other as if they were two lovers determined to protect their relationship at all costs, while the rest of us were portrayed as the villains trying to break them up.Brian sent me a message after the funeral. "Gemma doesn't love you anymore, Simon. How long are you planning to hold on to her? She's currently pregnant with my child. There's no way the Dawsons can stop us from being together now, no matter how much they hate me!"I couldn't help but burst out laughing. It turned out that they had already slept together. They still would have ended up together, even if Gerald hadn't died. It didn't matter to me, though, as I actually hoped they could stay together for the rest of their lives this time. I dropped by the hospital ward to get Gemma's signature for the divorce agreement. Brian looked at me with a mocking smile and said, "Gemma chose me, even if it meant wa

I chuckled bitterly to myself, thinking it'd be for the best for Gemma to never come back.Queenie rushed home from abroad. She broke down in tears the moment she saw Gerald again, her body trembling uncontrollably. She could barely stand without someone holding her up. She never imagined that their reunion would turn out to be a tragic farewell.Harry and Doreen endured every parent's worst nightmare—having to bury their own child. Doreen passed out, regained consciousness, cried herself senseless, and fainted once more. Harry was so worked up that he landed himself in the hospital, leaving the family in total disarray while Gemma was nowhere to be seen.Queenie somehow learned the truth as well. She remained silent about it, but I knew she was fuming inside.Gemma finally returned home three days later. She arrived aglow with happiness, flowers cradled in her arms—but the instant she crossed the threshold, her smile froze. She realized that the living room had been transforme
