Verret’s Pov

The silence followed us home.

Her fingers had been warm against my palm during the walk, yet her words still echoed in the air like ghosts that refused to fade. She’d said she’d rather die than be with me.

And still, she walked beside me.

Delilah’s steps were slower now, the heels of her boots scraping faintly against the marble as we entered the mansion. I released her hand once we crossed the threshold, the door shutting behind us with a sound that carried finality.

The air changed. I could feel it before I even saw them.

The sitting room was filled. The gold-embroidered robes. The silent gazes that followed me like watchful predators. The faint smell of incense.

The Priests’ Council.

Delilah’s voice broke the hush.

“Who are these people?” she asked, confusion wrinkling her brows.

“You don’t need to know,” I said, my voice sharp, final. I didn’t look at her when I added, “Go upstairs.”

Her lips parted, defiant as ever. “Why? What are you hiding now?”

I turned to face he

Verret’s Pov The silence between us stretched like a blade, sharp and taunting. She walked beside me, her steps slow but purposeful, her eyes fixed ahead as though every petal and leaf offended her existence. I could hear the rustle of her gown brushing against the gravel path, soft and rhythmic — a sound that did something strange to me. I hated it. I wanted it louder. I wanted her voice louder. The gardens of my mansion looked alive under the dim morning light, vines climbing the marble pillars, roses half-bloomed, and the distant fountain whispering water songs. But she — she was quieter than all of it. And somehow, that silence screamed louder than any noise I’ve ever known.I finally broke it.“Do you always make it a point to ignore people who save your life?” I asked, tone calm, almost bored. She didn’t even flinch. “Do you always make it a point to ruin the lives you save?”Her answer made me smirk despite myself. “You’re learning to bite back again. That’s good. I was starti

Delilah’s PovSilence had never felt so loud. The walls of Verret’s mansion pressed in on me like a thousand watching eyes, the air thick, heavy, suffocating. I didn’t speak a word to him when we returned. I didn’t even look at him. My chest burned with everything I wanted to scream, but what was the use? He’d already won.As soon as we entered, I went straight to the room. The moment the door shut behind me, I broke. I slid down to the floor and buried my face in my palms, the sobs escaping before I could even stop them. It hurt more than I wanted to admit—the silence, the control, the way he looked at me like he owned me. But worse than all of that… was the kiss. The kiss that shouldn’t have happened. The kiss that shattered every wall I’d built.I don’t know what overcame me. One second I hated him; the next, my body betrayed me, responding to the same man I swore to despise. I should’ve pushed him away. I should’ve slapped him, screamed, done something. But instead, I froze—my hea

Verret’s Pov “What do you mean, me?”Her words still echo in my head, light, trembling, daring me to repeat what I’d said. I don’t even think before I move. My breath fans against her ear as I whisper, low enough for only her to hear.“You know what I mean, Delilah.”She freezes. Her pulse flutters against her neck, and it’s the sound that undoes me — that fragile reminder that she’s real, that she’s right here, and yet somehow still not mine. My lips find the skin just beneath her ear, a dangerous place where restraint dies easily.“Don’t ask me what I'm doing, or tell me about your mate” I said to her.Her scent is maddening, something like crushed roses and iron, warm and alive. I don’t even remember deciding to touch her. One second I’m breathing her name, the next my mouth is against her skin, tasting the heat that burns off it. She shivers, her fingers clutching at nothing.“Verret…stop…I have a mate?”Her voice cracks, thin as silk in my grip.“I told you not to say that word

Verret’s Pov I was already prepared for the ceremony. They were going to hold it down at Moonridge, a ceremonial feast that only the elite few were invited to. It was supposed to be an honor, an honor for them that I even agreed to come.I never wanted to. I hate ceremonies, the fake smiles, the formalities, the flattery. But since Delilah had been giving me the silent treatment for days, I decided I wanted to go.With her.Maybe she would finally break character today. Maybe I’d hear her voice beyond that lifeless “thank you for the meal.”I found myself dressing quickly, for once not the last to arrive anywhere. Ridiculous, really. But I wanted to see her sooner.I craved her presence like a madman. That was stupid. And I knew it.I didn’t even understand this… thing growing inside me. I was Verret, the High Priest of the Obsidian Circle. I was built to command, to kill, to maintain order, not to feel. But lately, I couldn’t tell if I was losing control or simply losing my mind.Af

Verret’s Pov It had been days—long, dull, suffocating days—since Delilah had begged me to let her go.And since then, silence had taken her place. No more fiery words. No more defiance. No more spirit.Just quiet. At first, I thought her silence was a victory—peace, finally. But it wasn’t peace. It was emptiness. And gods, I hated emptiness. This morning, I walked down the marble stairs, my boots echoing softly in the stillness of the manor. I didn’t expect her to be there. She rarely came to the dining table these days unless she was summoned. But there she was…sitting straight-backed, eyes on her plate, her hair falling over her shoulder like a soft curtain of fire. She looked up briefly when I entered. “Good morning,” she said. Her voice was gentle, almost distant.I only nodded and sat opposite her. The servants had already laid the table, a quiet meal, warm bread, roasted meat, dark wine. I started eating. She did too.No words.Just the occasional clink of cutlery. And for the
