Making my way through the trees, I ran nowhere in particular. Just trying to run my frustration out. I’d been moving for hours, running to the next city over and beyond before returning. I was still a bit agitated. I continued to run until I was outside Jillie’s house. It was after two in the morning. I knew she was sleeping, but I couldn’t stop myself from waking her. I pulled out my phone and hit her speed dial button. It rang five times before going to voicemail. I hung up and called again. This time she answered on the fourth ring.

Jillie’s POV I took a deep breath. My hands were both shaking. I’d been avoiding this for two weeks now. It was too painful. I knelt in front of the headstone. Running my fingers over the engraved words, tears slowly ran down my cheeks. “Hey, Mal,” I stated through my tears. “I’m sorry I didn’t come sooner. I just couldn’t live with the guilt of knowing this happened because of me.” I stated quietly. “But the guilt I felt for leaving your funeral early and trying to stay away outweighed that.” I took another deep breath. “This sucks, Mal. This really is unfair. We were supposed to make up, and everything was supposed to get better between us. It wasn’t supposed to happen like this. Me sitting here crying my eyes out and talking to your headstone.” I paused for a minute. “We were supposed to do so much together. Go to college, get married, and have kids. Oh, speaking of kids, Alyx is pregnant. I know she wasn’t your favorite person, but I also know how much you like kids.”

Jillie POV "Jillie." I closed my locker and turned around to the sound of my name. "Hey, Aaden. Hey Jarren. Where's Mallory?" "She's late as usual," Aaden replied. We began walking down the hall toward my first-period class. I had it with Aaden. We said bye to Jarren at the door, then headed to our seats in the back. "Hey, Aaden." Some redhead said, batting her eyelashes. "Hey," he replied, giving her a nod. She blushed. Her cheeks turning the same color as her hair, and she went to her seat. "So you ready for Christmas break?" "Two weeks out of school, of course, I am." "It's technically three," Aaden informed me. He was right. After our two weeks of Christmas break, the seniors got to take their one-week trip. Our school tradition was that every class got a weeklong trip. The seniors went in the winter, juniors in the fall, sophomores in the spring, and freshmen at the beginning of May. That was one of the perks of attending an exclusive school that cost an arm and a leg.
