Chapter 4

Autor: Thai Ginger
"Let go of him!"

I did not let go. I held on to Jett as tightly as I could. At that moment, only one thought filled my head. I was going to shut his lying mouth for good and make sure he never spread another word of his garbage.

"Hails!" Jett shouted.

The next second, a hand shoved hard against my shoulder. It was Hailey.

I toppled sideways, and my foot missed the step. The back of my head slammed against the edge of a stair, and then I tumbled down the staircase like a rag doll.

Chaos filled my ears. The neighbors cried out in alarm. Jett was wailing, and Hailey was shouting. Over and over came the dull thud of my body hitting the stairs.

As the world spun around me, the last thing I saw was Hailey's back as she stood shielding Jett.

After that, everything went black.

…

When I woke up again, I was in the hospital.

The fluorescent light overhead stung my eyes, and the smell of disinfectant filled my nose and left my throat raw. I tried moving my fingers.

The hospital room was empty. Hailey was not there, and neither was anyone else I knew.

Just then, a nurse pushed the door open. When she saw that I was awake, she looked visibly relieved.

"Oh, thank goodness you're finally awake! Do you have any idea how bad this is? You needed six stitches in the back of your head, you've got a fractured shoulder blade, and don't even get me started on all the cuts and scrapes. How could you be so careless?"

She kept fussing as she changed my bandages, her tone scolding yet full of sympathy.

I only lay there, staring blankly at the ceiling. I did not shed a single tear. Maybe this was what it meant to be too heartbroken to cry.

After a while, I asked the nurse to hand me my phone. The screen lit up with dozens of unread messages, all from Hailey and Jett.

[Jake, I'm out of money. Send me 2,000.]

[Why aren't you answering me?]

[If you don't send me money right now, I'm done calling you my brother!]

Then came Jett's.

[If you don't clean your junk out of the hallway, I'm throwing it all out.]

[Hear me?]

[Fine. Don't say I didn't warn you.]

I read through them one by one. The soul-crushing pain I had felt at first was gone. All that remained was a cold numbness.

To her, it did not matter that I had been pushed down the stairs or rushed to the hospital. What mattered was that I had not sent her money yet. What mattered was that my things were in her way.

I opened Hailey's contact, blocked her, and deleted her number. Then I opened Jett's and did the same.

Once that was done, I called my boss. He picked up almost immediately.

"Hey, about that out-of-state assignment you mentioned before. I'll take it."

I had never dared to say yes before. The city was far away, and the assignment would last at least two years. I was afraid that if I went that far, I would not be able to look after Hailey.

I worried she would not eat well, that people would take advantage of her, and that without anyone keeping an eye on her, she would go down the wrong path.

Now, though, I was no longer afraid. I was not even worried anymore.

On the other end, my boss sounded pleasantly surprised. "Jake, you finally came around! You know the pay out there is three times what you're making here. If you're in, I'll have HR start the paperwork right away."

After I hung up, I looked up my landlord's number and sent a text: [Hi, I won't be renewing the lease on the apartment. Feel free to start looking for a new tenant.]

Once the message went through, I stared at the screen for a long time. It felt as though something inside me had finally snapped, and I felt lighter at last.

Three days later, HR let me know the paperwork had been approved. I packed up everything that same day, and with my suitcase in tow, I left the city I had lived in for 24 years.

…

That night, the doorbell rang at the apartment.

Hailey cursed under her breath, tossed her phone aside, and went to answer it. "Who is it?"

It was the landlord. He looked Hailey up and down, then motioned the movers to step in. "The lease is up. Get everything out of here and toss it!"

Hailey and Jett both froze on the spot.

I switched the phone to my other hand and set the bags down on the ground."Where are you right now?" My voice was calm, so calm that even I was a little surprised."I'm... I'm at the train station." Hailey's voice grew quieter. "Jake, I'm out of money. Jett broke up with me and took everything I had. I have nowhere to stay and nothing to eat. Jake, could you... Could you send me some money?"I fell silent.I was standing at the entrance to my apartment complex. The streetlight overhead stretched my shadow long across the ground.I thought back to two months ago, when Hailey had stood in front of me and said that if I did not give her the money, she no longer had a brother. Now that same sister was calling me, asking if I could send her some money.Suddenly, I felt exhausted. It was not just physical exhaustion. I was tired down to my soul."Hailey." My voice was soft, but I was not yielding. "You're not a kid anymore. You need to take responsibility for what you've done."The

It had been taken on Christmas morning that year. The whole family had dressed up in new clothes and gone to a photo studio together. It was the last photo of the four of us together. Less than three months later, Mom and Dad were gone.As I looked at the picture, my eyes slowly grew red. I pressed my phone face down against my chest and closed my eyes.Silently, I apologized to Mom and Dad. I had not raised her right, and I had not been able to hold our family together. Still, I would live a good life, and I would live it for both of them. The days went by, and my life in the new city slowly settled into a routine. I went to work, came home, ate, and slept. On weekends, I sometimes went shopping with Dani or took walks in the park by myself.I started learning to cook the food I actually liked, loading it up with hot sauce, garlic, and all the seasonings I had never dared to use before.I started buying clothes I actually liked. I no longer had to pinch pennies or count every dol

"If you don't give me the money, as far as I'm concerned, I don't have a brother."Now, every word she had said to me came back at her like a boomerang and struck her right in the chest. When Jett saw that she was only crying and not saying anything, he rolled his eyes, turned, and left. The door slammed shut behind him.Hailey sat alone in the damp, moldy little motel room and cried for a long time.…At that same moment, I was about 750 miles away in a city down south, unpacking in my newly rented apartment when my phone buzzed. It was a message from Dale.[Jake, I've got the apartment back. Your sister and her boyfriend have moved out. She didn't look too good, though. Maybe you should give her a call?]I read the message, and my thumb hovered over the screen for a long time. In the end, I did not reply. I set my phone down and went back to unpacking. It was a small one-bedroom, but it was clean and tidy. A pothos plant sat on the windowsill, left behind by the landlord, its

Jett kept his head down and said nothing."You never planned on spending the rest of your life with me either, did you?"The room suddenly went very quiet. Outside the motel, a car drove past, and its horn blared sharply.Jett gripped the blanket so tightly that his knuckles turned white. After a long while, he finally looked up. There were no tears in his eyes, only a coldness Hailey had never seen before."Hailey, let's break up."He said it calmly, so calmly that it sounded rehearsed.Hailey froze. She opened her mouth, but her throat seemed to close up, and not a single sound came out.Jett got up and started packing his things, moving quickly as if he were in a hurry."W-What did you just say?" When she finally found her voice again, it came out painfully hoarse."I said we're done." He did not even look up."Don't blame me. I don't have a choice. You got a 400 on the college entrance exam. No college is going to take you. What are you going to do with your life? Do cons

Hailey had always assumed I would be there no matter what. She could yell at me and push me away, and no matter how cruel her words or actions were, I would always forgive her. Now, I was gone. It was not a tantrum, and it was not a threat. I was truly gone. The motel bed was hard, the pillow was flat, and the TV blaring from the room next door made it impossible to sleep. Hailey tossed and turned, and all she could think about was my face.My eyes used to crinkle at the corners whenever I smiled. Over the years, though, I had seemed to smile less and less. When was the last time she had seen me smile? She could not remember. She could not even remember how long it had been since I bought myself new clothes.Every time she told me to get something new, I would say, "This one's fine. I can still wear it." She knew perfectly well that the clothes in my closet were the ones our parents had bought before they died. When our parents passed away seven years ago, I shouldered everythi

  • Blank Out of Spite   Chapter 6

Hailey was the one who had refused to believe me. She was the one who only listened to Jett. She was the one who had pushed me down the stairs with her own hands and then walked away without looking back.Jett stared at his belongings strewn all over the hallway, looking close to tears. "Hails, do something! My game controllers! It took me forever to save up for that whole setup!"Hailey stood rooted to the spot as if every ounce of strength had been drained out of her. She could not say a single word.Jett lost his patience and jabbed her arm. "What, did you forget how to talk? Didn't you say this was your place? How did it suddenly become someone else's? Your brother's unbelievable too. If he was renting, fine, but why hide it from you? Look at this mess he made. Now we don't even have a place to live!"The more he talked, the angrier he got and the more convinced he became that he was right. Finally, he shot to his feet. "I never should have gotten with you! Your family doesn't
