Chapter 3

Author: Thai Ginger
Did Jett say 252,000?

I looked at the two teenagers in front of me. One was the sister I had raised on my own. The other was the boy who kept swearing he would spend the rest of his life with her.

They stood at my front door, fully convinced they had every right to throw me out. They even expected me to pay them rent.

I suddenly laughed. The longer I laughed, the more my eyes stung.

"Do you two even know? This place stopped being ours a long time ago."

After the accident, our parents had been found mainly at fault and owed the other party a huge settlement. The apartment was sold in the second month after they died. It went for 800,000, and every cent went toward the debt.

Hailey was still in school at the time. I was afraid she would worry, afraid she would feel like she no longer had a home. More than anything, I was afraid it would make her insecure and sensitive and leave her unable to hold her head up.

That was why I kept it from her and signed a lease with the new owner, renting the same apartment back.

The rent was 3,500 a month, and I paid every cent of it. All of it was so she could still come home to her old room. All of it was so she could believe that even though Mom and Dad were gone, home was still here.

Yet now she stood in front of me and told me to my face that she was throwing me out.

"What are you talking about?" Hailey suddenly shouted. She looked at me in disbelief, as if I had just told the most outrageous lie.

Jett, however, let out a cold laugh and folded his arms. "Wow, that actually sounds pretty convincing."

He turned to Hailey, his voice softening. "Hails, don't believe him. He just doesn't want to hand the place over to you, so he made up an excuse. People like him will say anything for money."

To my shock, Hailey nodded. When she looked at me again, her eyes had gone cold. "Jake, I never thought you'd stoop this low. You'd even drag Mom and Dad into your lies just to keep an apartment!"

My heart sank completely. I had explained everything and told her the truth, yet she still refused to believe me. All it took was one word from Jett, and everything I had given, everything I had kept from her, and every reason I had for it became some kind of scheme in her eyes.

She pointed at my things in the hallway, her voice vicious. "Get out. Take your stuff and get out right now!"

She was so loud that the neighbors started opening their doors to peek out. Our next-door neighbor, Loretta Grimes, walked over with a frown and took in the mess strewn across the hallway. "What's going on here?"

I took a deep breath, about to explain. Before I could say a word, Jett jumped in to play the victim first.

"Everyone, come look at this. This is my girlfriend's brother. After her parents passed away, this apartment went to my girlfriend, Hailey. She felt sorry for him, so she let him keep living here.

"We never expected him to sleep around and bring home a different woman every other night. We just couldn't take it anymore, so we asked him to move out. Now, he's throwing a fit and refusing to leave. He's even claiming the place is his and threatening to take us to court."

As he spoke, Jett's eyes slowly reddened and welled with tears, as if he had been terribly wronged. He was a good actor. If I had not known the whole truth, even I might have fallen for it.

The others did not know the truth, though. Loretta turned to look at me, and something in her expression shifted. More neighbors poked their heads out, and everyone started talking at once.

"He always seemed like such a decent young man. I never would've guessed."

"You really never know with people."

"His sister's not even an adult yet. That's just awful."

Every word dug into my heart like a knife. I was shaking with rage, and my vision kept going dark.

I could put up with Hailey misunderstanding me. I could put up with her immaturity. I could even put up with her taking everything I had done for granted.

What I could not put up with was Jett standing at my door, twisting the truth and dragging my name through the mud.

"Shut up!"

I lost control and lunged at Jett, grabbing him by the collar. He let out a startled shout and stumbled backward.

Hailey froze for a second before letting out a furious shout.

I switched the phone to my other hand and set the bags down on the ground."Where are you right now?" My voice was calm, so calm that even I was a little surprised."I'm... I'm at the train station." Hailey's voice grew quieter. "Jake, I'm out of money. Jett broke up with me and took everything I had. I have nowhere to stay and nothing to eat. Jake, could you... Could you send me some money?"I fell silent.I was standing at the entrance to my apartment complex. The streetlight overhead stretched my shadow long across the ground.I thought back to two months ago, when Hailey had stood in front of me and said that if I did not give her the money, she no longer had a brother. Now that same sister was calling me, asking if I could send her some money.Suddenly, I felt exhausted. It was not just physical exhaustion. I was tired down to my soul."Hailey." My voice was soft, but I was not yielding. "You're not a kid anymore. You need to take responsibility for what you've done."The

It had been taken on Christmas morning that year. The whole family had dressed up in new clothes and gone to a photo studio together. It was the last photo of the four of us together. Less than three months later, Mom and Dad were gone.As I looked at the picture, my eyes slowly grew red. I pressed my phone face down against my chest and closed my eyes.Silently, I apologized to Mom and Dad. I had not raised her right, and I had not been able to hold our family together. Still, I would live a good life, and I would live it for both of them. The days went by, and my life in the new city slowly settled into a routine. I went to work, came home, ate, and slept. On weekends, I sometimes went shopping with Dani or took walks in the park by myself.I started learning to cook the food I actually liked, loading it up with hot sauce, garlic, and all the seasonings I had never dared to use before.I started buying clothes I actually liked. I no longer had to pinch pennies or count every dol

"If you don't give me the money, as far as I'm concerned, I don't have a brother."Now, every word she had said to me came back at her like a boomerang and struck her right in the chest. When Jett saw that she was only crying and not saying anything, he rolled his eyes, turned, and left. The door slammed shut behind him.Hailey sat alone in the damp, moldy little motel room and cried for a long time.…At that same moment, I was about 750 miles away in a city down south, unpacking in my newly rented apartment when my phone buzzed. It was a message from Dale.[Jake, I've got the apartment back. Your sister and her boyfriend have moved out. She didn't look too good, though. Maybe you should give her a call?]I read the message, and my thumb hovered over the screen for a long time. In the end, I did not reply. I set my phone down and went back to unpacking. It was a small one-bedroom, but it was clean and tidy. A pothos plant sat on the windowsill, left behind by the landlord, its

Jett kept his head down and said nothing."You never planned on spending the rest of your life with me either, did you?"The room suddenly went very quiet. Outside the motel, a car drove past, and its horn blared sharply.Jett gripped the blanket so tightly that his knuckles turned white. After a long while, he finally looked up. There were no tears in his eyes, only a coldness Hailey had never seen before."Hailey, let's break up."He said it calmly, so calmly that it sounded rehearsed.Hailey froze. She opened her mouth, but her throat seemed to close up, and not a single sound came out.Jett got up and started packing his things, moving quickly as if he were in a hurry."W-What did you just say?" When she finally found her voice again, it came out painfully hoarse."I said we're done." He did not even look up."Don't blame me. I don't have a choice. You got a 400 on the college entrance exam. No college is going to take you. What are you going to do with your life? Do cons

Hailey had always assumed I would be there no matter what. She could yell at me and push me away, and no matter how cruel her words or actions were, I would always forgive her. Now, I was gone. It was not a tantrum, and it was not a threat. I was truly gone. The motel bed was hard, the pillow was flat, and the TV blaring from the room next door made it impossible to sleep. Hailey tossed and turned, and all she could think about was my face.My eyes used to crinkle at the corners whenever I smiled. Over the years, though, I had seemed to smile less and less. When was the last time she had seen me smile? She could not remember. She could not even remember how long it had been since I bought myself new clothes.Every time she told me to get something new, I would say, "This one's fine. I can still wear it." She knew perfectly well that the clothes in my closet were the ones our parents had bought before they died. When our parents passed away seven years ago, I shouldered everythi

  • Blank Out of Spite   Chapter 6

Hailey was the one who had refused to believe me. She was the one who only listened to Jett. She was the one who had pushed me down the stairs with her own hands and then walked away without looking back.Jett stared at his belongings strewn all over the hallway, looking close to tears. "Hails, do something! My game controllers! It took me forever to save up for that whole setup!"Hailey stood rooted to the spot as if every ounce of strength had been drained out of her. She could not say a single word.Jett lost his patience and jabbed her arm. "What, did you forget how to talk? Didn't you say this was your place? How did it suddenly become someone else's? Your brother's unbelievable too. If he was renting, fine, but why hide it from you? Look at this mess he made. Now we don't even have a place to live!"The more he talked, the angrier he got and the more convinced he became that he was right. Finally, he shot to his feet. "I never should have gotten with you! Your family doesn't
