Chapter 2

Author: Comfortable Grace
I dropped to the floor, clutching my eye, and heard Henry laughing. "You brought this on yourself by having such pretty eyes."

It was already too late by the time I made it to the hospital.

Henry hid behind Dad, putting on a pitiful expression. He claimed he hadn't done it on purpose and had only been fooling around like any other boy. He said he hadn't known it would turn out this badly.

Dad shielded him, patting his shoulder. "It's alright. I know you didn't do it on purpose, Henry."

He then turned to me with a furrowed brow and said, "Henry didn't do it on purpose. You're the older brother, so don't make a big deal out of it, Julian."

I lay in the hospital bed, a bandage covering my right eye. I looked at Dad and asked, "W-what about my eye, Dad?"

"The doctor said it can't be fixed. You'll just have to use your left eye from now on. Don't be such a baby about it, Julian," Dad said before he went back to soothing Henry.

He even took Henry out to buy the new game console as a treat to make up for the scare.

I was 15 years old when that happened, so I knew well enough what was happening. I gritted my teeth and forced myself to face the fact that Dad didn't love me.

I got used to seeing the world with one eye, used to the permanent blur of gray where my right eye used to be. I still sometimes walked into doorframes on my right, spilled water when pouring it, or read until my left eye hurt and began to tear up.

Nobody ever took note of these struggles.

One day, Henry walked past me and asked, "Does your eye still hurt?"

I was taken aback for a moment. It had been quite a while since he'd asked about my eye, after all. "It doesn't hurt anymore."

Henry nodded and took a step forward. He suddenly looked back and said, "It's good that it doesn't hurt. It's not as if it'd change anything, right?"

He cocked his brow slightly, a triumphant grin tugging at the corner of his mouth.

I snapped out of my memories as I finished washing the dishes and went into the living room. Dad was carefully cleaning Henry's newly purchased limited-edition sneakers with a shoe brush, muttering as he worked, "Henry is going to look so handsome in these. He takes after me when it comes to style."

Henry smiled, telling Dad not to get any dirt on them. Dad chuckled and handled the sneakers more delicately.

My sneakers had been falling apart at the soles for ages, but Dad had never bought me a new pair.

I remembered that whenever my shoes got worn out as a child, Dad would head down to the workwear market to pick up the cheapest stiff-soled shoes, saying boys didn't need to be pampered. He would use the money he'd saved to buy designer-brand shoes for Henry instead.

I watched him polish Henry’s sneakers while standing in my old, ill-fitting shoes.

I always felt inferior to Henry. He had everything I didn't, and the designer-brand shoes he wore always made my eyes sting.

I walked past them without either of them sparing me a glance. I returned to my room and closed the door behind me.

I got ready to do my homework as the light from my desk lamp fell across the paper.

I suddenly heard Dad speaking from the living room. "Your birthday's next week, Henry. I've ordered a large birthday cake for you. How many of your friends do you want to invite over to play video games and celebrate with you that day?"

Henry's birthday fell on the same day as mine—or at least, that was the day we were both brought home. I had asked Dad back when I was still young why Henry got a cake while I got nothing. He simply told me that Henry was his biological son and I wasn't and that as the older brother, I had to be more sensible.

I was only six years old that year, but from that day on, I knew how things worked.

Henry had been kidnapped by human traffickers, and I was found alongside him. We were two newborn boys, both less than a month old, and we looked almost alike. Following the paternity test, Mom and Dad took Henry, their biological son, home.

They probably felt some kind of bond with me, so they chose to adopt me and raise me as their eldest son.

I finished my homework, turned off the desk lamp, and sat in the dark for a while. I kept thinking back to what those two teachers had said—two people with type O blood could never have a child with type B blood. Could there have been a mistake in the paternity test all those years ago, then?

I took a deep breath, finding the idea completely absurd the moment I considered it. I closed my eyes, not daring to think about it any further. I was almost afraid of what I might find if that assumption turned out to be true.

Dad stumbled backward, his face turning deathly pale.I walked away after saying that, never once looking back. That September, I arrived at my university in Bellevue with my suitcase in tow.I looked at the clear blue sky, then turned my attention to the cityscape. I could take in the view with my left eye, while my right eye remained shrouded in gray. It didn't matter to me, though. I'd spent three years looking through one eye, so I was used to it by now.During freshman orientation, my academic advisor asked, "How big is your family?""I'm the only one."He was stunned by my response, but he didn't probe further.…I never returned home after that incident.Later, Mom called to tell me she'd transferred the family's entire savings into my account. It came up to 150 thousand dollars. "Your father and I have made countless mistakes we can't take back, so we definitely have no right to ask for your forgiveness. I turned away and walked out, only to notice that a crowd had gathered outside.Mr. Zimmerman, our neighbor, craned his neck to peer inside. He had watched me grow up over the past 18 years. His gaze drifted over Dad kneeling on the floor, the two paternity test results scattered across the floor, the scar on my forehead, and the cloudiness in my right eye. He gasped sharply and slapped his thigh in realization. "Oh my! Didn't the Luthers spend years beating this kid and chewing him out? Did they think they could just claim him back after finding out he's their biological son?"Someone nearby added, "I know, right? Everyone in the neighborhood has seen how they treated him. They made him do heavy work outside in the dead of winter until his hands were cracked and bleeding."And we all know how he went blind in his right eye. They said it was an accident, but what kind of accident just happens like that? They suddenly want to claim they're related now that he has a bright future a

Henry stood in the hallway, biting his lip nervously with an icy gaze. He had been there the whole time, having come with Dad. He finally broke down the moment the truth sank in. He hurried toward the doorway and bellowed, "You can't believe any of this, Dad! They must have made a mistake!"Dad kept his back to Henry. He remained kneeling on the floor as he slowly reached for my face with a trembling hand.I turned away before he could touch me.Dad's outstretched hand remained frozen in midair as he stared at me in a daze. He finally broke down in tears and said, "I'm really sorry! I'm sorry about your right eye and the scar on your forehead! I'm really sorry for everything you had to go through all these years! How can I ever make it up to you, Julian?"He was shaking all over as he kneeled on the floor, gripping his hair tightly with both hands, drowning in regret.I looked at the man before me. Dad had looked coldly at me countless times, slapped me hard across the face, and r

I held my phone against my chest and lay down on the bed, noting that the water stain on the ceiling was shaped like a pair of open wings. It wasn't long before my phone started ringing like crazy. Ms. Lowe called, followed by the dean, the principal, and a reporter from the state TV station. I was ranked 3rd in the city and 17th in the state, with the highest score in the school's history. That afternoon, someone called my name from downstairs. Dad had come, with reporters, cameramen, and neighbors filming on their phones behind him. He pushed the door open, and the moment he saw me, his eyes welled up with tears. He grabbed me by the shoulder, gripping me far harder than I expected. "Behold my son! He has always been hardworking since he was a child! Julian is someone I personally raised!"He spoke into the camera with a choked-up voice, pulling off the act without missing a beat.Just then, a neighbor muttered from the back of the crowd, "Isn't that the adopted one from the Lut

On Sunday evening, Henry cornered me downstairs by the dorm. He leaned against the wall, arms folded across his chest. "Did you go digging through Dad's room the other day, Julian?"I remained silent.Henry slightly cocked his head to the side, a mocking smile spreading across his face. "I saw you take the hair off Dad's comb. Do you still think you're his biological son, Julian?"I clenched my fists as I tried to avoid his gaze.He chuckled slightly and took a step closer. He then whispered, "I bet you don't know this, Julian."His eyes gleamed as he continued, "Dad said he'd hand you over to that labor contractor on East Street once you're done with your college entrance exam. He'll take you to Ardenia to work under the table. He's offering 55 thousand dollars upfront for five years of your labor, Julian."I was utterly dumbstruck, my shoulders trembling slightly.Henry patted my shoulder, his voice brimming with excitement. "Did you know what Dad said? That 55 thousand dollar

I felt my hands trembling slightly. I had suffered for 18 years. I was blinded in one eye, and I sustained a permanent scar on my forehead. I recalled the humiliation of being punished to kneel in the rain at night and the endless repetitions of "You're not our biological son", "You're not worthy of us", and "You're just an adopted child," which I had heard throughout the years.I squatted in the hallway, biting down hard on my lip as tears streamed down my face. I'd been Dad's biological son all along. It all came down to a single mistake on that paternity test result 18 years ago. I had suffered for it for 18 years, enduring mistreatment and contempt.I got to my feet, folded the paternity test result, and slipped it into the inner pocket of my coat. I wandered down the street in a daze, lost in thought. How would Dad react when he saw the result? Would he feel guilty? Would he pat my back to comfort me? Would he apologize to me? Would he feel sorry for my blind right eye and
