Chapter 1

Dad picked up the last piece of honey-glazed ribs at the dining table during dinner and placed it on my younger brother Henry Luther's plate.

My hand froze, my fork still in midair as I reached for the honey-glazed ribs dish. I hesitated for a moment before picking up some vegetables instead.

"I'd like to sign up for a math competition prep class, Dad…"

Dad didn't even bother to look up from his food. "Henry's grades slipped on his last monthly exam, so help him with his studies this weekend instead."

I said hesitantly, "I need to study for my own exams too…"

Dad put down his cutlery and looked at me. "Your grades are good anyway. What's the big deal about helping Henry? I didn't raise you all these years just for you to refuse such a small favor, Julian."

Henry chewed on the honey-glazed rib and said through his mouthful, "I'd like to join the public speaking competition—the city-wide one."

Dad instantly agreed. "Go ahead and sign up for it. How much is the registration fee?"

"90 dollars."

"I'll transfer the money to you tomorrow."

Doreen Lowe, my teacher, recommended me for the state math competition last month, with the registration fee being 45 dollars.

At the time, I lingered by the living room doorway for a long time before working up the courage to ask for the money. Dad wiped the coffee table and didn't even raise his head. "You might not even win the competition if you prepare for it. Where do you think we're supposed to get that much money, Julian?"

I eventually had to tell Ms. Lowe that I didn't want to participate in the math competition when she asked me about it two more times.

"I'm done," Henry said as he pushed his plate away, leaving more than half the plate of food untouched.

Dad reached out and felt Henry's forehead. "Why did you eat so little? Do you not feel well?"

"I played basketball with some friends this afternoon and had cold soda after that."

Dad pushed the plate back to Henry and said, "You have to finish your food since you're still growing. Go on now, Henry."

I looked down at my plate, where most of the food remained, feeling a lump in my throat. I chewed on the vegetables for a long time before finally swallowing.

Three days ago, I went to the academic affairs office to help sort out student files. I noticed that the door was slightly ajar. Before I could push it open, I heard two teachers talking inside.

"Henry Luther from Class 3 had type B blood listed on his last medical checkup."

"Huh? That can't be right. His father listed himself as type O on the emergency contact form he filled out during the parent-teacher meeting, while his mother is type O as well. How could two type O parents have a type B child?"

There was a moment of silence inside, followed by the sound of papers being flipped through. "Henry wasn't the one adopted by the Luther family, right? I recall them adopting a boy by the name of Julian Luther."

"That makes even less sense, then."

I stood outside the door, my hand resting on the doorknob. I couldn't bring myself to push the door open. Mom and Dad were both type O. I mentally went over the blood type chart from biology class. I knew very well that two type O parents couldn't possibly have a type B child.

I crouched on the floor, replaying those words in my mind. I suddenly heard a buzzing filling my ears. Could it be that Henry wasn't Mom and Dad's biological son either? Who was their biological son, then?

I had been turning that thought over in my head for three days.

Once we were done with dinner, Dad ordered me, "Go wash the dishes. Henry wants to watch the basketball game."

I remained seated, my mind still stuck on Henry's student file.

"Go on, then!" Dad urged.

I got up and walked into the kitchen. I cranked the faucet all the way up, and the water hit the side of the bowl and splashed all over me.

I looked down at my hands, noticing that the second joint of my left ring finger had a slight crook in it, exactly like Dad's. I suddenly realized that the bridge of my nose was straight and high, exactly like Mom's. I also had a dimple on the left side of my cheek, exactly like Dad's.

I already knew I was adopted when I was six years old, so whenever I noticed these similarities, I always told myself they were just coincidences.

However, once three years ago, a distant relative dropped by, took one look at me, and said to Dad, "That boy has got your eyes—dark and bright, just like yours."

Dad didn't react much. He waved a hand and said, "He's not even my biological son. How could we possibly look alike?"

During the visit, that uncle kept complimenting me, saying I was sensible, hardworking, and capable of doing so many household chores.

Henry heard every bit of it, so once that uncle left, he took out the high-powered laser pointer he had just bought and pointed it around the living room.

I was squatting on the floor cleaning up the fruit platter on the coffee table when he told me to look up. I barely raised my head before the red laser beam shot straight into my right eye, the pain instantly hitting me.

That was when I went blind in my right eye.

Dad stumbled backward, his face turning deathly pale.I walked away after saying that, never once looking back. That September, I arrived at my university in Bellevue with my suitcase in tow.I looked at the clear blue sky, then turned my attention to the cityscape. I could take in the view with my left eye, while my right eye remained shrouded in gray. It didn't matter to me, though. I'd spent three years looking through one eye, so I was used to it by now.During freshman orientation, my academic advisor asked, "How big is your family?""I'm the only one."He was stunned by my response, but he didn't probe further.…I never returned home after that incident.Later, Mom called to tell me she'd transferred the family's entire savings into my account. It came up to 150 thousand dollars. "Your father and I have made countless mistakes we can't take back, so we definitely have no right to ask for your forgiveness. You should keep the money and consider it the capital you need

I turned away and walked out, only to notice that a crowd had gathered outside.Mr. Zimmerman, our neighbor, craned his neck to peer inside. He had watched me grow up over the past 18 years. His gaze drifted over Dad kneeling on the floor, the two paternity test results scattered across the floor, the scar on my forehead, and the cloudiness in my right eye. He gasped sharply and slapped his thigh in realization. "Oh my! Didn't the Luthers spend years beating this kid and chewing him out? Did they think they could just claim him back after finding out he's their biological son?"Someone nearby added, "I know, right? Everyone in the neighborhood has seen how they treated him. They made him do heavy work outside in the dead of winter until his hands were cracked and bleeding."And we all know how he went blind in his right eye. They said it was an accident, but what kind of accident just happens like that? They suddenly want to claim they're related now that he has a bright future a

Henry stood in the hallway, biting his lip nervously with an icy gaze. He had been there the whole time, having come with Dad. He finally broke down the moment the truth sank in. He hurried toward the doorway and bellowed, "You can't believe any of this, Dad! They must have made a mistake!"Dad kept his back to Henry. He remained kneeling on the floor as he slowly reached for my face with a trembling hand.I turned away before he could touch me.Dad's outstretched hand remained frozen in midair as he stared at me in a daze. He finally broke down in tears and said, "I'm really sorry! I'm sorry about your right eye and the scar on your forehead! I'm really sorry for everything you had to go through all these years! How can I ever make it up to you, Julian?"He was shaking all over as he kneeled on the floor, gripping his hair tightly with both hands, drowning in regret.I looked at the man before me. Dad had looked coldly at me countless times, slapped me hard across the face, and r

I held my phone against my chest and lay down on the bed, noting that the water stain on the ceiling was shaped like a pair of open wings. It wasn't long before my phone started ringing like crazy. Ms. Lowe called, followed by the dean, the principal, and a reporter from the state TV station. I was ranked 3rd in the city and 17th in the state, with the highest score in the school's history. That afternoon, someone called my name from downstairs. Dad had come, with reporters, cameramen, and neighbors filming on their phones behind him. He pushed the door open, and the moment he saw me, his eyes welled up with tears. He grabbed me by the shoulder, gripping me far harder than I expected. "Behold my son! He has always been hardworking since he was a child! Julian is someone I personally raised!"He spoke into the camera with a choked-up voice, pulling off the act without missing a beat.Just then, a neighbor muttered from the back of the crowd, "Isn't that the adopted one from the Lut

On Sunday evening, Henry cornered me downstairs by the dorm. He leaned against the wall, arms folded across his chest. "Did you go digging through Dad's room the other day, Julian?"I remained silent.Henry slightly cocked his head to the side, a mocking smile spreading across his face. "I saw you take the hair off Dad's comb. Do you still think you're his biological son, Julian?"I clenched my fists as I tried to avoid his gaze.He chuckled slightly and took a step closer. He then whispered, "I bet you don't know this, Julian."His eyes gleamed as he continued, "Dad said he'd hand you over to that labor contractor on East Street once you're done with your college entrance exam. He'll take you to Ardenia to work under the table. He's offering 55 thousand dollars upfront for five years of your labor, Julian."I was utterly dumbstruck, my shoulders trembling slightly.Henry patted my shoulder, his voice brimming with excitement. "Did you know what Dad said? That 55 thousand dollar

I felt my hands trembling slightly. I had suffered for 18 years. I was blinded in one eye, and I sustained a permanent scar on my forehead. I recalled the humiliation of being punished to kneel in the rain at night and the endless repetitions of "You're not our biological son", "You're not worthy of us", and "You're just an adopted child," which I had heard throughout the years.I squatted in the hallway, biting down hard on my lip as tears streamed down my face. I'd been Dad's biological son all along. It all came down to a single mistake on that paternity test result 18 years ago. I had suffered for it for 18 years, enduring mistreatment and contempt.I got to my feet, folded the paternity test result, and slipped it into the inner pocket of my coat. I wandered down the street in a daze, lost in thought. How would Dad react when he saw the result? Would he feel guilty? Would he pat my back to comfort me? Would he apologize to me? Would he feel sorry for my blind right eye and
