“Sire, all preparations for the hunt have been completed. Is there anything else you need?” My beta, Jasper, bows to me before standing to meet my eyes. He only speaks formally like this when I am in the presence of the council, which unfortunately I am. Otherwise, he is my only family and friend. “No, Jasper, that will be all.” He bows again and moves to stand on my right and slightly behind me. My gamma, Dirk, continues with what he had been saying before me and the royal council. “My king, as I was saying, the rogues attacked the south border and the Golden Crescent pack. We have managed to stop the attack before all was lost, but they destroyed four homes entirely and killed ten wolves. Nine from the pack and one of our own.” I growl lowly, hating the pain these bastards have put innocents through. “What of the survivors? What plans do we have set for those affected by these attacks? I want these rogues stopped. How dare they tread on my land and attack my people.” I practically snarl, it’s been getting more and more difficult to keep my rage from claiming me. Everyone in the room has tensed, sensing my powerful aura. Dirk speaks up. “My lord, we have set up a camp away from The border in the neighboring pack, they did not hesitate to help set up the survivors with food and shelter and other necessities. We have stationed soldiers all around the pack for protection and are sending supplies to help as we speak. There is a good couple of healers there, so any wounded are being treated. As for the destruction and damages, we have other packs lending aid in helping to rebuild and repair. Our best scouts are following the scents of the rogues. If we can figure out their patterns, learn why they are doing this, we can make a plan to attack rather than maintain an offensive.” I appraise my gamma. There is a reason that I chose Dirk as my gamma and Jasper as my beta. Not only are we friends, but I can trust them with my very soul. Their intellect and cunning as a team make upholding my law and winning my battles and strategizing lethal. “Very well, it seems I hardly have to give too much insight into this. Keep me apprised, Dirk. I want to know when we can begin taking action and I want to know those affected by these attacks are being taken care of.” Dirk bows and moves to stand on my left and slightly behind me. I look around at the elders of my council. They are my advisors, a team built to bring things to my attention that I may have overlooked and to remind me of old laws and traditions. They’re a group of bores and, most times, I wish I could be free of them. “What next do we need to discuss?” Elder Radcliffe stands slowly and bows before speaking. “My lord, after the hunt, there needs to be actions taken to find you a mate. Chosen or Goddess given. You are thirty-two and we need a queen and an heir-“ I growl loudly and slowly stand. “Elder Radcliffe, I understand the need for a queen and heir. You make a point of reminding me at every meeting. You will do well, to back off now instead of bringing it to my attention at every turn. I will seek a mate as is needed of me, but you will not push me any further, unless you’d like to feel my claws.” He shivers and shows his fear a moment, but remains standing. “Yes, my king, I only bring it up as we are all concerned for your wellbeing as much as we are concerned for the kingdom. You and the rest of us know how being mateless affects a lycan.” I decide to leave it at that and raise my hand. “Enough, I have taken it into advisement and am bringing this meeting to a close. I have a hunt to lead.” As everyone in the room rises and bows, I take my leave. My strides carry me quickly through the door and into the hall. I can hear the steps of gamma and beta on my heel. I growl a little bit as I walk, feeling the weight of needing a mate as well as the need to take care of my people on my shoulders. Jasper speaks up with a chuckle. “Down boy, leave it for the boars. They’re annoying, but you have everything under control, more so than those idiots know.” If he was anyone else, I’d have growled at him for speaking to me like he just did. Dirk speaks next. “They are fools, what’s more important? Ensuring the safety of the people or finding a mate. Pick your poison.” Jasper laughs and shakes his head. “Both. A queen stabilizes things and brings a sense of wellbeing to the people and our king. While we also protect the people.” I growl at this but Jasper speaks up again. “Now now, I’m only playing devil’s advocate. You know I support you, Lev, neither Dirk or myself would ever doubt or question you.” I sigh and pause to face them. “I know. Thank you, my brothers. Let’s focus on the hunt and go from there.” Once out in the courtyard of my estate, I face my pack and alphas visiting from other packs. I step forward and all turn to face me and bow. “My people and Alphas from other lands. Welcome! Tonight, we come together to remember what has been lost, what has hurt us as a whole. Many here have felt this more keenly than others, but be assured no one feels it more so than I. I dedicate this hunt to you, my people, to the packs of this kingdom. Tonight, we hunt as one pack, no titles in this forest. We hunt together to bring food to our tables. With the bounty of the forest, we will send food to those suffering and we will celebrate and remember those taken into the goddess’ embrace too soon. We will honor them and we will take care of those left behind. Join me in this remembrance, in honoring our people! Let the hunt begin!” With that, howls and cheers rise into the air. We shift and take off into the vast forest. The thrill of the hunt guiding our paws and our senses. Two days later, Levantus guides Rowena and I out into the gardens. He takes us into a cluster of trees that opens up into a wide clearing. “This spot is completely hidden and no one knows about but myself and my beta.”I walk around the clearing, taking in the space we have and look to Rowena. “What do you think? Is this going to work?”I have no idea how much space we are going to need, so I lean on her insights. She smiles, puts her hands on her hips, and nods. “Yes, this will work just fine. If we need more, we can figure something else out. After we get a little deeper into training, we will need you, your Majesty, but for now, you’ll just be a little distracting. Before we go out separate ways, I have something for both of you.”She reaches into a pocket in her dress and pulls out two pendants. One is on a thick titanium chain, the pendant is in the shape of claw, obsidian stone in the center of the paw, tigers eye claws.
Rowena smiles as she watches the love blooming and warming between Odessa and Levantus. “Child, I can give you some training, but a lot of what you have in you will be triggered along the way. Also, due to your bond, Levantus may end up receiving some gifts himself through you. It’s part of the balance between you. You are facing powerful enemies, that cursed wolf had a lot of powers he stole and a witch or two in his pocket. You’ll need to become stronger to be able to stand against them.”Levantus growls as he curls an arm around Odessa. He rubs his nose against her head and breathes her in. “We can do it, together we can face whatever is to come. I know it…”Rowena laughs and shakes her head. “Unfortunately you can’t do much for her training. But yes, you’re both going to need each other to face things ahead. However, her training is going to be a little more difficult now that her sight is back.”Levantus looks thrown and
I walk with Levantus down hallways within the castle, aiming toward the room given to the witch. As expected, there are guards outside of her doors, but they are for her protection. I’ve noticed how every guard and worker in the castle have taken to bowing to me. It makes me feel incredibly self conscious. As the king’s mate, it means a lot even before becoming official. I steer my mind away from things that don’t need to be faced right this second. Right now, I need to know more about this witch and what has happened. I knock on the door and a voice answers. “Come in, dears.”We walk in to find her propped up in bed. She has a tray of some food and water nearby, but she’s hardly touched it. She gives me a kind smile and it makes my heart clench. She reminds me a lot of the woman who helped ground me when I was lost and gave Arius and me so much before she passed. “Hello, how are you feeling?” I ask while Levantus
After such a heavy battle, there is a reprieve. Most of the dead are rogues, about 23 altogether with 10 warrior deaths. Despite who died on what side, the loss is devastating. Buildings and grounds have been damaged as well. The only blessing is that the kingdom did not fall and Odessa now stands. With her wolf restored, her vision has returned as well. Her eyes are now their natural amethyst color. Whatever energy she emitted when she awakened that healed and rejuvenated, caused wolves close to death to heal enough for help to arrive while smaller wounds healed. Levantus was able to completely heal because of his direct mate bond to her. His worst wounds still require some healing, but he was able to stand again. ~~~~~~~~ Odessa POV ~~~~~~~~~Sego. I’ve known for years that he is a despicable man, but it still hurt. I can’t help but carry some blame on my own shoulders. It feels like I keep failing and people keep getting hurt.
Deep within the castle, the witch continues her work with Connor’s aid. The two different magics working continuing to clash. The power struggle is immense and the dark energy is trying to seek a way to reconnect to the dark energy outside the circle. The witch closes her eyes and amps up her focus while she chants. Mixed within her chanting are prayers to the Moon Goddess, seeking to undo wrongs that have been done. Right as everything seems to crescendo, Odessa suddenly goes limp, her eyes partially open and empty. Her lifeless body lay in the center with the dark energy writhing within it as well. Connor goes to move, panic strickens him for a moment. The witch’s voice lashes out to him. “No! Don’t break the circle, trust the process! Trust your lady and her wolf!”Her words stop him cold, though he can’t understand how she could be so calm about the situation. He tries to reel himself back in, though he can feel the loss of Odessa
I howl loudly as I rush into another group of rogues. There are bodies all over the place. Thankfully, they mostly look like rogues, but we won’t know the count until it’s over. My heart is absolutely hammering my chest. I’m torn between feeling my mate’s pain and fighting the good fight. Connor does his best to ensure I know what’s happening when he can. He warned me she would be in pain, but we have to trust it’s part of her fight to break through. I’m growing tired of Sego’s cowardly actions. Sending wolves in to do his fight, but not stepping in himself. I can’t help my frustration because I want to rip him apart for everything he has done. I find myself focusing on four wolves, rogues that are pushing at overwhelming two of my people. I kill the first I plow into instantly before turning on the second, slashing his jaw and throat out with my claws. Right as I take the third down, I sense it. The power shift in the air, the storm grows eve
The smells from the kitchens are amazing, the energy is intense. Levantus isn’t holding anything back, setting a banquet to announce us. Goddess, my heart feels like it’s going to beat right out of my chest. After having lived so long without a pack, without a home, a connection other than Arius.
I’m absolutely beaming as I walk with my mate, Chloe holds her hand and Ren holds mine. Both kids are between us with Jasper and Dirk following at our back with picnic items. Arius leads, his tail wagging. Having them as pack members allows me to actually feel the sibling bond between Arius and Od
It’s been two days since I first met Chloe and Ren. They’re the sweetest kids and their desire to have more of a normal life is evident. They were over the moon today because we are taking them with Arius to meet the kids. Ren is bouncing from foot to foot beside me while holding my hand. “Are
I sigh as I kiss him back, the heat and passion building between us. My legs straddle him where he sits in his chair. Everything about him makes me burn. He pulls at my dress, lifting the skirts up slowly with one hand, his other moves down to lower the top. He tucks it under my breast before find
