Chapter 1

When they heard that, they glanced toward my car.

My car was fully reinforced with bulletproof and explosion-resistant features. After the crash, there was only a dent in the outer shell. Nothing inside was damaged. His car, on the other hand, was half-wrecked with all four airbags deployed.

Frustrated that his luxurious Maybach couldn’t withstand a crash with a Volkswagen, the owner was fuming.

“You’re only driving a Volkswagen, yet you’re trying to act smug here? Do you even know how much my car costs? It’s worth more than your life!”

“My life?” I frowned, catching a strong whiff of alcohol from his breath. It all made sense. “Well, I don’t know about that.”

Hearing that, the Maybach owner seized me and sneered.

“Why the hell am I wasting my breath on some broke loser like you? You’d better start calling your family and friends for money now.”

However, the truth was that he had been the one breaking the law by racing down the emergency lane at over 200 km/h.

Even though he saw that I had already merged into the emergency lane, he didn’t even bother slowing down before slamming into me.

Now, he even had the nerve to turn the story around, blaming me.

I scoffed upon hearing his words. “Borrow money to compensate you? You’re the one who should be paying me.”

“You’re not even supposed to drive in the emergency lane unless it’s an emergency, but you were doing at least 200 km/h, didn’t slow down one bit when you saw me and just rammed right into my car. It’s going to be all on you when the traffic police arrive.”

Instead of getting angry, the Maybach owner laughed.

“My fault? Do you even know where I just came from? I was at the Jacksboro City’s Traffic Bureau chief’s house! So, when the police show up, who do you think they’re going to side with? Me or you?

“So what if I hit you? My car drives in and out of the Jacksboro municipal compound without a hitch! You’re the first idiot who’s ever dared to block my way!”

Spitting as he shouted, I took a few steps back in disgust, but he mistook it for fear and burst out laughing.

A woman stepped out of the passenger seat, fixing her disheveled clothes. Her expression was dripping with disdain.

“Honey, don’t waste your time on some lowlife like him. Guys like this get nervous even around normal police officers, let alone the chief of the Traffic Bureau.”

I sniffed the acrid stench of alcohol and sneered.

“Well then, let’s see who will be the ones scared when the traffic police show up.”

With that, I lit a cigarette and took out my phone, about to make a call. However, the Maybach owner, who was visibly flustered, snatched it from me.

“People like me don’t have time to waste with people like you. Just call your family and beg them for money already!”

I had just returned from military service and honestly didn’t know who the so-called big shots in Jacksboro City were.

However, no matter how powerful someone thought they were in this province, I doubted any of them outranked my father.

Frowning, I shoved him aside and snatched my phone back.

“I’ll repeat myself. If anyone’s paying, it’s you. You’re fully at fault. Got that?”

As I pushed him, I saw the Maybach owner’s face turn a furious shade of red.

“Do you even know who I am? I’m Gabriel, the second boss of Jenkins Construction! How dare you push me?!”

Hearing that, some of the other drivers who were implicated in the crash gasped.

“Gabriel? That individual is notorious for using his family connections to exert influence. That poor dude is screwed now!”

“Yeah. I heard some guy once accidentally bumped into him and, the next day, Gabriel beat him half to death and dumped him in front of the police station.”

I heard all the muttering around me, but I kept my tone ice-cold. “You snatched my phone first. If you keep acting like a nuisance and refuse to pay, I will call the police.”

“Who’s paying for what, you asshole?!” Gabriel snapped, rage boiling over. He grabbed a baseball bat from his car and charged at me.

Instead of backing away, I stepped forward.

With one hand, I clamped down on his wrist like a steel claw. With the other, I grabbed his upper arm. One swift twist and… Clang! The bat hit the ground and Gabriel was pinned beneath me face-down.

“Let go! So what if you can fight? Out here, it’s not about fists! It’s about connections and power! Do you think I can’t make a single call and have hundreds of people come over here to beat you up?”

He kept squirming and shouting arrogantly.

I let him go. Not because I was afraid, but because arguing with him any longer was only going to delay my trip home for my family dinner.

  • Blind to the Fact   Chapter 10

Soon after the inspection team left Jacksboro City, the Jenkins brothers finally breathed a sigh of relief. They were ready to squeeze the company’s workers dry to make up for their recent losses. Then, I arrived at Jack and Gabriel’s door."Did the inspection team leave? Yeah, that was me. I cleaned up your mess.“As a thank-you, don’t you think it’s time you gave me a little something in return?”At that, the Jenkins brothers were displeased.Gabriel scoffed. “You say you cleaned up our mess. So what? It is not like we have not dealt with inspection teams before. We always handled it just fine!”Jack’s tone was no better. “We already gave you 30% of our dividends. Isn’t that enough? You are being greedy.”I squinted my eyes. “Looks like I have been too nice to you both. You have forgotten your place.”Without another word, I turned and walked away. Moments later, the police arrived and took Gabriel into custody.Within the hour, the news of his arrest was all over town. The

  • Blind to the Fact   Chapter 9

After the eve was the festive day, the holiday was just a blink of an eye for some people. However, for the others, like Gabriel, days passed like years. One day, unable to bear it any longer, Gabriel called his older brother, Jack.“Jack, it has already been a week since the holiday. When are you going to get me out of here?”Jack paused for a long moment before answering, “Hang in there a bit longer. I heard rumors that Xander will be taking up a new position at the Jacksboro Public Security Bureau soon. I will use the welcoming party as a chance to plead your case.”Gabriel grumbled, “Come on, Jack, he is just some punk. Do we have to be so scared of him?”Jack let out a sigh. “When will you finally grow up? Remember this! All our wealth and status are built on power. With power comes the need for respect. Got it?”With that, he hung up, hesitated a moment, then called me.“Who is this?”“Mr. Cullen, it is me, Jack. Hahaha, I heard you will be arriving in Jacksboro City soo

“You bastard!”Before I even finished my sentence, Jack swung a slap straight right on Gabriel’s face—so hard it knocked him out.“Mr. Cullen, I’ll take him to jail right away. Your father’s waiting at home to have dinner with you. I won’t take up any more of your time.”I gave him a long, meaningful look, said nothing, and got into the car with Captain Walter. Moments later, dozens of armed police helicopters rose into the night sky and began to retreat with us slowly.Through the rearview mirror, I saw Jack standing there, watching us as we left. His face twisted again with rage, gradually smoothing out into a cold calm. Was that fury just now just him putting on an act?I glanced sideways at Captain Walter.“Captain Walter, tell me more about the Jenkins Construction and the Jenkins family.”Captain Walter pondered for a moment, then said, “Jack built up Jenkins Construction from scratch. They mainly contract government projects, such as roads, bridges, and city development.

  • Blind to the Fact   Chapter 7

“Heh... fine. Pay now then. Jenkins Construction will cover the full cost of damages in Jacksboro City tonight. Will you agree to that?”Before Jack could say anything, Gabriel flew into a rage.“The whole city’s losses? Xander Cullen, what do you think our company is? A money tree for you to pluck from? Yeah, I did offend you, I’ll admit that! However, if you want to get it back from someone, take it out on me! My life’s cheap. I’ll pay for it with my blood!”Jack’s face darkened and he kicked his brother hard in the stomach.“Shut up! I’ve spoiled you too much! How dare you say something like that to Mr. Cullen!”Gritting his teeth, Jack turned to me and said, “Mr. Cullen, I’ll have this fool thrown straight into prison after the holidays for offending you.“But as for your condition... our construction company can’t agree to that.“It’s not that we can’t afford it, but we have tens of thousands of workers working under us. If we pay that amount of money now, we might not be a

No one responded.I glanced at Gabriel with a faint smirk and said coldly, “First, turn on the lights and surveillance cameras back on. The ones he shut off.”Upon hearing that, Captain Walter asked the surrounding onlookers for the whole story. His eyes flickered with shock as he grasped what had happened.“How dare you!” he growled, eyes burning with rage as he shot a glare at Gabriel. He took out his phone and barked, “Switch every surveillance camera and traffic light in Jacksboro City back on. Every! Single! One! Is that clear?”Snap! It had taken Gabriel two seconds to disconnect the surveillance. Now, it took less than half a second to bring them all back on.I smiled, picked up the machete from the ground, reeking with the stench of blood and piss, and held it to Gabriel’s neck.“Didn’t you say that in Jacksboro, life and death are yours to command? Well, here’s your chance. Kill me.”Terrified, Gabriel collapsed to his knees and started bawling.“Mr. Cullen, I was wro

Everyone present was stunned.“Oh my god, what’s going on? Is this some kind of military drill?”“It’s the holiday season! What kind of drill needs these many helicopters?”Even Gabriel froze for a moment, but he thought of something more. The only person who could command this many armed police helicopters was the recently transferred high-ranking governor from another province. That was the very person the Jenkins family of Jacksboro City had been trying to cozy up to lately.“Boys, stop! Don’t hit him until they’re gone!”Corruption and violence grow from the same root — power. They were like sisters, born of the same soil.Gabriel might be arrogant, but only toward those inferior to him. When it came to those superior to him, he was submissive. That was how he and the whole Jenkins family had survived all this time.Hearing his words, I smiled faintly. “Why stop? Keep going. Didn’t you say that in Jacksboro City, whoever you want alive lives, and whoever you wish dead di
