Mikhail

I watched Liliana stare at the gun in Anastasia's hands. Her face was pale, but her jaw was tight with determination. She was scared, but she wasn't going to back down. Had she stood up like this to her god-damned father, he wouldn't have sold her out.

My chest swelled with pride and terror at the same time.

Aunt Anastasia was someone every Volkov family member dreaded. Just like my grandfather and father. Demons in human flesh. I could say the same for myself though. Cruelty runs in the family. That's how we’ve come this far.

“This is enough,” I said, stepping in-between them. “You've made your point, Aunt Anastasia. She's proven herself.”

“Has she?” Anastasia tilted her head like a snake studying its prey. “She hasn't done anything yet except talk.”

“She stood up to you,” I shot back. “She challenged your methods. She showed more courage in five minutes than most people show in a lifetime.”

“Pretty words again,” Anastasia laughed. “But words don't stop bullets, nephew. Wo

LilianaThe sound of my own scream seemed to come from someone else. One moment I was crouched behind the steel drums, watching Mikhail confront Anton, and the next, rough hands were dragging me backwards into the shadows.“Hello, little bird.”My father's voice in my ear made my skin crawl. His arm was wrapped around my throat, cutting off my air, while his other hand pressed a knife against my ribs.“Papa,” I gasped, struggling against his grip.“I am disappointed in you, Liliana.” His voice was conversational, like we were discussing the weather, not like he was holding a blade to my body. “I gave you one simple task. Get close to Mikhail Volkov. Instead, you fell in love with him. You bastard.” His voice dripped with disdain.“I didn't…” I coughed.“Don't lie to me.” The knife point pricked through my dress, drawing a bead of blood. “I can see it in your eyes every time you look at him. Pathetic.”Across the warehouse, I could see Mikhail frantically searching for us, his gun rais

MikhailThe sound of Liliana's gun hitting the concrete floor echoed through the basement like a gunshot. I closed my eyes for a split second, cursing silently. Our element of surprise was gone.“Well, well,” Anton's voice drifted down from above, filled with smug satisfaction. “Sounds like our guests have arrived early.”I grabbed Liliana's hand and pulled her behind a stack of wooden crates just as heavy footsteps thundered down the basement stairs. My heart pounded against my ribs, but my mind was crystal clear. I have been trained my entire life for this kind of situation.“Stay low,” I whispered against her ear. “When I move, you follow. Don't think, just move.”She nodded, her green eyes wide with terror. Even scared out of her mind, she was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen.Three men appeared at the bottom of the stairs, assault rifles raised. They moved like professionals, covering each other's angles, sweeping the basement methodically. But they made one crucial mistake

LilianaThe color drained from Mikhail's face as he stared at his phone, and I knew without seeing the screen that something terrible had happened. His entire body went rigid, every muscle coiled like a spring ready to snap.“What is it?” I whispered, though part of me didn't want to know.He held out the phone with a shaking hand. The image on the screen made my stomach lurch. A woman with silver hair and Mikhail's distinctive cheekbones sat tied to a chair, her mouth covered with tape, her eyes wide with terror. Behind her stood a man I recognized from around the manor as Anton, Mikhail's head of security.“Aunt Anastasia!” I bellowed in disbelief. She was sick and still receiving treatment.I looked at the timestamp in the photo. “This was taken twenty minutes ago.”“Anton’s been planning this for months.” Mikhail's hands clenched into fists. “Getting close to my family, learning our routines. I trusted him with our security protocols, our safe houses. I might as well have handed h

  • Blood And Vows    Chapter Thirty-eight

MikhailThe sun filtered through the heavy curtains of my study, casting long shadows across the floor where broken glass was still scattered. I hadn't slept. I couldn't sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw her face. I saw the way she had looked when she said she had rather die as a Volkov than live as an Orlov. My chest felt hollow.I stood before the mirror in my private bathroom with a razor in my hand, preparing for what was coming, not because I feared Nikolas, but because I feared what the outcome would be. The face staring back at me looked older than my thirty-two years.“Boss?” Dmitri's voice came from the doorway. “The men are ready for the final briefing.”I dragged the razor across my jaw with practiced precision. “Give me ten minutes.”“About the woman…” “Her name is Liliana.” My voice cut through the air like a blade. “Use it.”Dmitri shifted uncomfortably. “About Liliana. Some of the men are... concerned. About bringing her tonight.”I met his eyes in the mirror.

LilianaThe sight of him standing there, half-naked and devastatingly beautiful in his pain, made my breath catch in my throat. The dim light cast shadows across his sculpted chest, highlighting every muscle, every scar on his body. His dark hair fell in waves past his shoulders, and for a moment, he looked less like the feared Reaper and more like a fallen angel. But his eyes... his eyes held nothing but cold fury and hurt.“Why?” He asked again, his voice cutting through the silence like a blade.I stepped into the room, my bare feet silent on the marble floor. “Because I'm a fool,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “Because I thought I could have both.”“Both?” He laughed, but there was no humor in it. “You thought you could betray me and keep me at the same time?”“I thought I could protect you while giving him what he wanted.” The words tumbled out of me in a rush. “I never gave him anything that would truly hurt you, Mikhail. I swear it.”“Swear it?” He took a step closer, the win

MikhailThe wine burned as it slid down my throat, but not nearly as much as the betrayal that burned in my chest. I'd retreated to my private study, the one room in the manor where I could think without interruption, where the weight of being Mikhail Volkov, head of the most feared family in Moscow, could temporarily lift from my shoulders. But tonight, even this sanctuary offered no peace.I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the estate grounds, my chest bare, the cool air from the slightly open window doing nothing to calm the fire raging inside me. My hair had grown longer than I usually kept it, dark strands falling past my shoulders in waves that caught the dim lamplight. The crystal glass in my hand held the finest Georgian wine money could buy, but it might as well have been poison for all the satisfaction it brought me.Liliana.Even her name in my thoughts was like a blade twisting in my gut.I'd given her everything. My trust, my protection, my heart, th
