Chapter 6

مؤلف: Brooks Sterling
"Fine. Looks like you won't give up till we slap you with the truth. Still want to act tough? Bella, go pull up the surveillance footage," Linda said coldly.

Bella immediately headed upstairs. "Ronan, once that footage is right in front of you, I want to see how you explain it."

Ronan didn't bother responding. He lifted his suitcase and went upstairs.

He didn't have much, so packing took only a short while. Ten minutes later, he was back downstairs.

Bella had just come down too and was speaking with the rest of the family.

"The footage is gone? Isn't our surveillance saved for at least six months?" Dominic frowned.

"I checked. Some clips are deleted. Someone definitely tampered with it," Bella said.

"It must've been Ronan. Only he would know exactly when he went to steal the necklace," Denise added. "No wonder he sounded so confident earlier—he knew we wouldn't find anything."

Allison stayed silent, her eyes flickering with something unreadable.

"You've grown bold, haven't you?" Linda snapped after hearing their accusations. She glared at Ronan, who had just reached the bottom step. "You knew we wouldn't find anything, didn't you?"

Ronan's gaze slid briefly to Thomas, who sat obediently on the sofa, acting innocent.

Then he let out a cold laugh. "I don't even have a key to this house. And the study is always locked. Only a handful of people can get in.

"If something goes missing, you automatically assume it's my fault. Now that the surveillance is gone, you accuse me of deleting it. You really never change—shameless to the bone."

"Enough!" Dominic exploded. "You're completely out of control! If I don't teach you a lesson today, you'll forget your own surname!"

He snatched the ruler from Linda and stormed toward Ronan, swinging it down hard.

But before it struck, a hand shot out and grabbed it.

A split second later, Ronan jerked the ruler free, snapped it in half, and threw the pieces to the floor with a crack.

"Dominic," he said, eyes sharp and feral, "I told you—yesterday was the last time. Lay a hand on me again, and I'll fight you to the death."

His expression—twisted with fury—sent a shock through the entire Vance family.

This was not the boy they knew—the boy who always smiled at them, who cowered when scolded, who lowered his head and accepted every insult. Who slipped away silently after each reprimand.

They had never seen him like this.

Even Allison, still deep in thought, stared at him, stunned.

But Dominic's rage only intensified. Breath quickening, he jabbed a finger at Ronan's face. "Ungrateful brat! You think I can't handle you?"

Ronan sneered. "Sure, you have money and status. But you only have one life. Push me far enough—what do I have to lose? In your eyes, I'm worthless anyway. If it comes down to it, I don't mind taking everything down with me."

Dominic choked on fury, unable to speak.

Thomas rushed over, patting Dominic's back soothingly while turning to Ronan with a soft voice.

"Ronan, Mom and Dad are doing this for your own good. You stole Mom's necklace, but she wasn't even planning to punish you. If you'd just admit it, they'd forgive you."

Inside, Thomas was ecstatic. The more chaos Ronan caused, the less anyone would forgive him. Ideally, they'd cut ties completely.

Ronan watched Thomas's performance. If he hadn't witnessed so much in his past life, he might have been fooled. Thomas really was a talented actor.

Ronan smiled lazily. "Thomas, you really treat me so 'well'. But you can fool everyone else—just not me. No need to put on a show in front of them. Honestly, watching you makes me sick."

A flicker of anger passed through Thomas's eyes before he replaced it with wounded innocence.

"Ronan… I just don't want you fighting with Mom and Dad."

Ronan let out a cold chuckle and patted Thomas's face lightly. "Your acting is impressive."

With that, he turned and walked toward the door.

As for the necklace, he had no intention of explaining. Let them think whatever they wanted. Who cared what strangers believed?

"Ungrateful brat! Get out!" Dominic roared, face flushed red. "And don't ever come back!"

"Don't worry," Ronan said without looking back. "Even if you beg me someday, I won't return."

The front door slammed shut behind Ronan.

"Dad, calm down," the sisters hurried to say.

"I should never have given birth to him," Linda fumed.

Allison stood at the foyer, staring toward the door. After a long moment, she headed upstairs.

Inside her room, she locked the door, turned on her computer, and opened a folder.

Inside were all the automatically backed-up surveillance videos.

The house's surveillance wasn't stored only on the study's main system—her computer was linked to it as well. She'd set it up years ago as a backup in case anything happened to the main system.

Ronan's sudden change had startled her.

More than that, the anger he showed carried a weight of deep disappointment.

But disappointment from what?

She didn't understand why she was opening the footage now—it was pure instinct.

Allison had an excellent memory. She quickly located the video from the day their mother attended a banquet.

She watched quietly.

Then her pupils shrank.

Because the person sneaking into their parents' bedroom and taking the necklace… was her obedient, sensible little brother—Thomas.

She stared in disbelief. When Thomas reached Ronan's bedroom door in the footage, she closed her eyes briefly.

Her fingers trembled around the mouse.

In her ears echoed the words Thomas had said downstairs:

"You stole Mom's necklace, but she wasn't even planning to punish you. If you'd just admit it, they'd forgive you."

She remembered Thomas's expression clearly.

That was what shocked her the most.

When had Thomas learned to lie so effortlessly?

And why had Ronan barely defended himself—like he was used to this?

A chill crept down her spine.

Had Thomas grown accustomed to lying… and Ronan accustomed to being blamed?

Pulling herself out of her daze, Allison straightened up and quickly scrolled through the rest of the footage.

As Ronan walked toward the Serenity Gazebo, his mind wandered back to Judy.Since his rebirth, everything had shifted. Apart from the conflict with his family, this was the first real change from his previous life.In Ronan's last life, Judy had been abandoned by Thomas only after he had died. But in this life, the abandonment had come earlier. He felt a spark of anticipation. He wanted everything to change, including the Vance family. This time, he would watch them regret their choices with his own eyes, not from the perspective of a lingering spirit. When he arrived at the gazebo, he saw a student wearing black-rimmed glasses sitting inside."Excuse me, are you Kevin Daxton?" Ronan asked."You're Ronan Vance?"Ronan smiled and nodded. "Hello, Kevin."The student, Kevin, was a senior and the administrator of the university forum."What brings you here?" Kevin said, pulling out a pack of cigarettes and offering one to Ronan.Ronan waved politely. "Thanks, but I don't smoke."

"What did you just say?""I… I want us to go back to how we were, Ronan. I'll make it up to you. Do you remember that night in senior year, the night you walked me home? You told me—" Judy's words tumbled out faster and faster.Ronan cut her off sharply. "Judy, how do you even have the nerve to say that?"Judy's face went pale. "Ronan…"Ronan sneered. "I spent so much time raising your grades, even at the cost of myself, almost missing out on the university I wanted to attend. And you… you abandoned me and got together with Thomas."You knew he's my brother and still did it. Tell me—what were you thinking at that moment?"Again and again, you've come to me because of him—questioning me, humiliating me. Judy… the fact that you can even say what you just said… your moral compass is really something else."He gave her a cold, cutting look and began to walk away."Ronan, don't go! Please… just give me one chance!"For the first time, Judy felt a panic so intense it gripped her hea

After speaking, Thomas hung up without another word. He tossed the phone onto the bed and took a deep, steadying breath. When he closed his eyes, Miley flashed across his mind again. He couldn't forget her. He swore to himself that he would have her.If he could take Judy away from Ronan, he could take the second, the third… Just as he had told Judy earlier, she was useless to him now. He hadn't worried that she would reveal the truth about the past to Ronan. Even if Ronan knew, he could do nothing. At home, the family still trusted him.But Allison… he'd have to keep an eye on her."Miley Reinman… such a beautiful name…" he muttered.…The next morning, Ronan set out early to start his "work."He had no classes that morning and had already contacted the forum moderators, arranging to meet them after delivering the items.By the end of the morning, he'd earned three dollars. The orders today were noticeably more than yesterday. Judy felt a wave of panic rising in her chest. When Thomas left, he hadn't said a single word to her. When she couldn't get him on the phone, she sent him a text instead.Judy: [Thomas, are you still angry? Will you please pick up my call?]Judy: [I know Ronan upset you, and you're unhappy. Don't worry, I'll always stand by your side.]Judy: [Thomas, are you asleep?]Judy clutched her phone tightly, her thoughts in complete chaos. At the same time, she kept cursing Ronan. This was all his fault! She comforted herself quietly. Thomas was probably asleep. Tomorrow, he would definitely reach out to her.But just as she was about to wash up and go to bed, her phone rang. It was Thomas.Judy lit up with relief. She hurried into the hallway to answer. "Thomas, did you make it home?""Mhm. I'm back." His voice was nothing like usual. It sounded cold and distant."As long as you're home, that's good. Thomas, you—"Before she could finish, Thomas cut her off. "Let's break up."Judy

"Thomas, just now you said Ronan and his dormmates were picking on you?" Allison asked, looking at Thomas.Thomas's face crumpled with grievance. "I… I guess it's not exactly bullying. It's just… they surrounded me and said things to scare me…""Why would he do that?" Allison pressed."Why else? He probably thinks Thomas is easy to mess with," Bella interjected from nearby."Finding someone else to pick on Thomas? Allison, we can't let this go. We need to find out what school he's at, and then we'll go there!" Carmen said, indignation flaring in her voice."Exactly! Let's find out which school he's in. We can't let him act so recklessly!" Linda agreed.Allison looked at them in surprise. "You… you don't know which school he's at?""He never told us. How would we know?" Linda said, clearly irritated.Allison shook her head. "It's not that he didn't tell us. He did. We just… never paid attention."Of course. They didn't even know Ronan's birthday, let alone anything else about h

Carl wasn't much of a talker, so naturally the task of keeping the conversation lively fell to Dennis. And it didn't take long for Dennis to recognize Miley—after all, they went to the same high school, and she was practically a legend there. As the four of them drank, their words started flowing more freely. Sean, showing off his usual charm, would occasionally drop a witty comment, sending the girls into giggles."Miley, when did you and Ronan meet?" Dennis asked, curiosity in his tone."That's going back a ways," Miley replied with a glance at Ronan, her lips curling into a gentle smile."Damn, Ronan! We've known each other so long, and you never mentioned this! And I didn't expect our high school goddess to be from the same university as us," Dennis said, looking at Ronan with a mix of awe and mischief.Taking advantage of the distraction, Ronan leaned toward Miley and whispered, "Thanks for today."Sitting next to her, he occasionally caught the light scent of her shampoo wh
