Cole shook Harry’s hand in return, his voice a little rough as he said, “Hello, I’m Cole.”I was about to feel the awkwardness settle in when Harry continued the conversation. “Sorry, I already had dinner with a client. I’m not very hungry. Cole is our guest. Sadie, why don’t you keep him company? I have some urgent emails to handle in my study. Cole, I apologize for leaving like this.”As Harry walked away, he patted my hand lightly, signaling I didn’t need to worry. He looked even worse than he had a few hours earlier at the distribution point. The old padded jacket he wore was soaked through, clinging tightly to his body and making him look even thinner. In his hand, he was gripping a filthy rag.Then, a burly middle-aged woman wearing a greasy apron appeared at the restaurant doorway. One hand on her hip and the other pointing straight at Cole, her voice rose sharp and shrill.“Get out! Did you hear me? I’ll say it one last time. Your pay is seventy dollars. The rain kept getting heavier, so I had no choice but to slow the car. My voice, however, stayed as calm as ever.“I loved him… very much.”Ava turned to look at me in shock.“Then why did you…”My eyes drifted down to my wrist. The bruises that once covered it had long since faded.“Ava, love isn’t everything in life, and romance certainly isn’t. Love couldn’t keep me from dying during those nights when my fever burned too high. Love couldn’t turn into a gun or a box of cold medicine. If Cole and I had continued living together in that state, it would’ve been unbearable. He would’ve been consumed by guilt, and I would’ve been full of resentment. No matter how much love remained, it would only have turned into mutual torment… a slow kind of suicide.”I paused and let out a long sigh. “Separating was actually better for both of us. Why would you do something like that? Are you crazy?
