Chapter 1

Jack Fraley's face darkened instantly.

He pointed at me and snarled in a low voice, "Have you lost your mind? The scouting team's mindstone is still active! Do you have any idea how the Elder Council will see you when they get this feed?"

He bent down to pick up the scattered dried grass.

The ring I had given him, the symbol of our mate bond, glinted between his fingers, painfully bright.

The other Beta werewolves in the team gathered around, all stepping forward to defend Lily Baker.

Her family had been rising fast lately. Everyone was happy to curry favor.

"Luna, you're too emotional. Alpha meant well. How could you lash out like that?"

"Exactly. It's Lily's first time on a full-moon raid. As Luna, it's your duty to keep her safe."

I tried to explain, but my throat had already been scorched raw by the silver mist. Not a single clear sound would come out.

At that moment, Lily peeked out from behind Jack, her eyes rimmed red.

"Luna, please don't be angry at Alpha. If it helps… I can give the moonstone back. My skin burns a little, but I can endure it…"

The moment she said that, Jack pulled her closer to his chest.

"Don't be stupid! She's just using her status as Luna to bully a new member. Back when she led the pack to fight for territory in Northland, she wasn't this delicate."

"Fight for territory?" I stared at him in disbelief, feeling as if an invisible hand was crushing my lungs. "When I held Northland against pressure from three packs, whose glory was I fighting for?"

Jack's expression turned ugly.

"That was your choice. I never forced you. And besides, that was your duty as my mate. What, did you expect me to thank you every single day?"

After a pause, he lifted his chin arrogantly.

"Lily saved my life. If her face gets ruined by this silver mist, can you take responsibility for that?"

It was absurd.

For a so-called savior, he was willing to sacrifice me. What kind of debt could outweigh a five-year mate bond?

The silver mist thickened, my vision blurring at the edges.

I had to brace myself against the rough bark of a tree just to stay upright. My legs felt boneless.

The knee I had injured saving Jack years ago throbbed deep in the cold, damp fog, pain seeping into every joint.

I stared at the two of them, desperate to rush forward and demand answers, but all that escaped my throat was a hoarse wheeze.

A female Beta exaggeratedly mimicked my sound, then burst out laughing.

"What's wrong? Choked up from anger? You were pretty sharp-tongued back when you argued against Elder Abbott at the Elder Council meeting."

Laughter rippled through the group.

Jack stood there with his arms crossed, watching coldly, as if I were nothing more than a hysterical fool.

"Enough. Stop embarrassing yourself."

He grabbed the strap of my gear and dragged me deeper into the swamp.

"Stay here and calm down. We'll talk once the fog clears. Otherwise, you'll just do something else that disgraces the Luna title. And when that happens, my reputation will take the hit."

"This mist… It's highly toxic…"

I clutched his sleeve, my fingers trembling uncontrollably.

He shook me off hard. The edge of the ring scraped across the back of my hand, leaving behind a chilling sting.

"Cut the act. How long are you gonna keep playing this pity game to fight for attention? You think I don't see through you? I'm not one of those werewolves who worship you blindly. I won't go soft just because you pretend to faint."

With a loud rustle, he yanked a vine covered in silver thorns across the path behind me, sealing off my only escape and trapping me in the thickest part of the mist.

Their voices drifted in from outside. Jack was laughing as he handed Lily a bottle of water.

"Just ignore her. She's been put on a pedestal for too long. Does she really think the Bloodmoon Pack would fall apart without her?"

"Jack, will she really be okay? I heard this silver mist is extremely dangerous…"

Lily's voice was full of fake concern.

"What could happen? She once drove off a rampaging grizzly on her own. What's a little fog compared to that?"

Curled up behind the thorny vines, I didn't even have the strength to cough.

The toxic mist slid into my lungs like icy snakes through my mouth and nose.

Earlier, I had taken a bottle of Moonshard Elixir from a witch, along with a mindstone meant for emergencies.

That elixir was now lying near Lily's boots, only a few steps away.

Yet, I couldn't even lift my hand.

My body trembled violently from the pain as my vision dimmed.

Outside, not a single person looked back at me.

I didn't know how much time passed before a pair of delicate deerskin boots stopped in front of me.

It was Lily.

She removed the moonstone. There wasn't a trace of burn on her face.

A victorious smile curved her lips as she crouched down, her voice low and poisonous.

"My dear Luna, do you know this? Jack has wanted to sever the mate bond with you for a long time."

I stared at her with widened eyes, trying to curse her out, but only a weak hiss escaped my throat.

Lily's smile widened.

"He said your face makes him sick. If it weren't for your family backing you, he never would've married an aging, ugly she-wolf like you."

Looking at the elders kneeling across the floor and the crown they held out, I felt nothing but irony."Elder Fox, your memory seems pretty bad."I spoke slowly, unhurried."I'm no longer part of your pack. And in Northland, I'll be the queen. Why would I lower myself to become another Alpha's subordinate?"Noah was in tears, pressed flat against the ground."We're sorry. We were idiots. That damn Jack fooled us all!"The pack is in chaos now. The surrounding packs are circling us like predators. If this goes on, the Bloodmoon Pack is finished!"Please, for the sake of the Moon Goddess, for the sake of so many wolves, come back and take control!"If you return, you'll be our one and only queen!"So now, they finally understood. Now, they wanted me back as their queen.Unfortunately for them, it was too late. I had no interest left in a land that had betrayed me."My roots are in Northland," I said calmly. "As for your throne, whoever wants it can have it.""Princess North

Looking at Jack kneeling in front of me, I felt nothing at all.If this was how it would end, why did it ever have to begin?"Your apology is like trash left on the roadside. No one wants it, and neither do I."I lifted the cup of floral tea Ella had just brewed."As for her…"I flicked a glance at Lily, who was gasping on the floor like a dying dog."One is a liar, and the other's a fool. Whatever twisted love story the two of you share, keep it to yourself. Don't try to drag me into it."Jack froze on his knees. He clearly hadn't expected that even after humbling himself like this, I would still be so cold."Rowena, what do you want from me before you'll forgive me?"He looked up, his eyes rimmed red."We were together for five years. Do you really feel nothing for me at all?""You want to talk about feelings?"I laughed softly."Any feelings I had died the moment you took my moonstone and hung it around her neck."They were completely eaten away when you threw me into

The council hall fell into a deathly silence.Noah's lips trembled, but not a single word came out.Jack jerked his head up, his eyes bloodshot as he glared at me."Rowena, don't push things too far!""Push things too far?"I walked up to him and lowered my voice."Compared to you throwing me into poisonous fog and leaving me to die, which one of us went too far?"Who was it who once clutched my legs, begging me to help seize the mineral veins that the three major packs were eyeing in Northland?"And who was it that swore he'd love me forever after I took a lethal blow for him and shattered my knee?"Jack, your love is cheap."His body began to shake violently, his face drained of all color."I…"He wanted to say something, but nothing came out."I'm done talking."I straightened up, didn't spare him another glance, and turned to Reynold."Let's go.""Princess North!" Noah called out urgently from behind me. "You can sever the mate bond, but please, for the sake of the

"Princess North?"The entire council hall was stunned by the sudden turn of events.Jack looked especially shaken, disbelief written all over his face."Princess? What princess? Rowena, since when are you…"He had been with me for five years. All he knew was that I was the daughter of Northland's lord. He never knew that I was the sole heiress my father had named, the future queen of all Northland.I had never told him. I wanted his love as a mate, not his loyalty to my status.Looking back now, I realized it was laughably naive.Reynold rose to his feet, his icy gaze sweeping over Jack and the elders. The murderous intent that clung to him, forged on battlefields soaked in blood, drained the color from the faces of every pampered werewolf present."Princess North isn't someone you get to bully."Reynold's voice dripped with open contempt."Jack Fraley, Alpha of the Bloodmoon Pack! You threw the treasure our pack holds above all else into a swamp to be eaten alive by toxic m

The atmosphere inside the Sacred Hall was heavy and suffocating.Five elders sat high on their stone thrones, led by Noah Fox, the grand elder. Every one of them looked grim.Jack and I stood on opposite sides of the chamber, far apart, with a clear line drawn between us."Outrageous!"Noah slammed his staff hard against the stone floor, the dull thud echoing through the hall."Rowena, do you have any idea how much damage cutting off supplies will do to the pack?"He called me by my name, not "Luna." The implication was obvious."Of course I do."I inclined my head slightly, neither servile nor defiant."But that impact comes from my right, as Northland's heiress, to dispose of my private property. It has nothing to do with the Bloodmoon Pack.""What…" Noah was so angry that his beard trembled. "As the Alpha's mate, your property belongs to the pack!""Oh, really?"I pulled the already signed Mate Bond Severance Form from my coat and handed it to Ella, who stepped forward t

Jack's face went ghostly pale as he stared at me in disbelief."You've lost your mind! Do you even know what you're doing?!""I've never been clearer than I am right now." I looked at him calmly. "Pick up your ring and get out of my life."Lily's tears came instantly. "Rowena, please don't do this… Jack was just confused for a moment. Don't be mad at him, okay?"She reached for my hand, but one look from me made her freeze in place."How does any of this concern you?"I swept her with a cold glance, then turned to Ella, who had been standing quietly behind me the whole time."Ella.""Yes, Princess North?"Now that my mate bond with Jack was officially dissolved, Ella had gone back to calling me Princess North, just like before."Use the mindstone right now.
