Crying Over Spilled Milk

“I am so sorry,”

Nicholas held his sister’s hand but his eyes couldn’t meet hers. Rain wasn’t sure if it was because he was exhausted or just ashamed.

Her eyes took in his features, she hadn’t seen him in five good years and she had a feeling that after everything that had happened, this was probably the last time in a long time she would see her brother again.

“What’s done is done,” Rain replied, although she was mad at her brother for always making bad decisions, he was the only family she had and despite being scared shitless of what would come next, she was relieved that she didn’t have to deal with the haunting image of her brother lying lifeless on the ground.

“You have to pay him back as soon as possible Nicky! This people are dangerous…I don’t know why you even got involved with them in the first place!”

"When you get back to your place if you can, my bank cards are there...I have saved up a lot but I don't know if it'll cover much but just empty the accounts and start paying him back,"

"Isn't that the money you've saved up from your books?"

"I-" Rain inhaled shakily, she'd finally gotten where she wanted, gotten a good publishing company and her first book signing was only in a few weeks but she doubted she would be out of here by then.

"I'll pay you back I swear it!" Nicholas said in a determined tone. He had to, if not she had no means of getting out of this country or even fulfilling the dreams she had initially began to save for.

"You have to Nicky and after that, don't get involved with these people again come back with me to Japan or heck, we can go back home, to Nigeria together,"

His expression darkened and Rain realized just how much she had overestimated her brother's brain.

“No!” Nicholas said, suddenly looking like he was offended and very much angry.

“You don’t get to come here and try to dictate my life again,” he said “I’ve worked very hard to get to where I am and the only reason I got this far was because I stayed away from your scolding and corrections all the time!”

It was escalating and Rain knew she should stop there...She shouldn’t let his words get to her as they always did but yet, her brother was so fucking infuriating and ungrateful that she wanted to rip his stupidly swollen face off!

“Excuse me?” Rain pulled her hands away from his “You ghosted me for five years just because I try to keep you out of trouble, look where you’ve ended up and here you are saying I’ve been dictating your fucking life, now I’m screwed because of you! Because you never listen to a word I say!”

They were going to have a fight again, Rain just knew it. Her brother never really liked it whenever he was told he made bad decisions and she isn’t one to be quiet when she sees that he’s doing something wrong…which caused him to drift away from her, because he thought he was always right.

“Great, how nice it is to have Miss Perfectionist back in my life!” Nicholas sneered. Rain scoffed and glared at him.

“You know, I risked my life walking down those stairs with an empty gun just because I was worried you’d be killed…right now, if it were in another situation, I would’ve pulled the trigger myself!”

Nicholas looked at her with a shocked expression, then he looked like she had just hurt his feelings severely.

“Rain, you—”

“—Sorry to interrupt your wonderful family reunion,”

It was Romeo, he had both hands in his pockets as he walked up to where they stood. He had that warm smile on his face that made him look extremely friendly and approachable but Rain knew better than to fall for that façade.

“Bella signora, times up. Xander’s sent for you,”

Rain suddenly found it hard to breath, she was definitely afraid of coming face to face with that man again. She didn’t know what was going to happen, she didn’t know what to expect and it pissed her the fuck off because she didn’t get herself into this fucking mess!

She turned to look at her brother and glared harder.

“I hope you learn your lesson from this experience,” she said as she looked at his face that was already swollen from all of the hits he had probably collected from Vlad and his colleague.

“If you don’t, then that’s your fucking business but believe me when I say, after this…” she gestured at the both of them “ You and I are done!”

Romeo turned around to walk away and she followed behind him. Rain squared her shoulders and willed herself not to turn around and look at her brother, she fought back tears as she walked up those stairs.

“Capo, she is a stranger, a foreigner—”

“ Did I ask for your opinions on my decision?” Alexander didn’t shift his attention from the files in his hands, rather he cocked up a brow which was enough warning for Vlad to shut his mouth.

Maybe he had become too chummy with the help, maybe that was the reason they all felt they had a say in his matters.

“You can leave Vlad, I have no use for you now,” Alexander said, dismissing the man with a wave of his finger.

He thought back to when he first set eyes on the girl, she was a great opportunity for him that he wouldn’t let pass him by.

He had known Nicholas for four years, grown to trust the bastard but now that trust had turned to hatred. He was planning on giving him a promotion but now he was bent on giving him a fate worse than death.

He would break his sister and then hand over the broken pieces back to him for money.

Alexander smirked at the thought of it.

Maybe once he was done with his plans, she would no longer have that sharp mouth. She would become docile, just like he liked his f*ck toys.

Romeo opened the door a few seconds after Vlad had left and behind him, the scared looking sister of his so called soldier.

She was shaking, anyone could notice at first glance but yet, when she raised her head to meet his eyes, he was slightly surprised by the calm in her eyes.

She was definitely a character, very much different and probably much smarter than her brother.

“You—”

Alexander raised his hand and silenced her before she finished her sentence. He knew she was about to say something to convince him that she wasn’t afraid of him which off course wouldn’t work but only amuse the hell out of him.

Everyone was afraid of him.

And he wasn’t even trying.

“Se n’è andato?” Alexander asked Romeo who had that annoying grin on his face that he hated.

“Si Capo” Romeo replied with a nod.

“They were having a very cute argument before I interrupted them, you should have seen it. It was hilarious.” Romeo chuckled “But yes, he has left and I’m sure we’ll be hearing from him soon,”

Really soon…

Alexander nodded in agreement and then turned his attention back to the woman that looked like she had just gotten out of bed. It didn’t hide her beauty, she looked like she jumped straight out a bedroom magazine with that shirt that barely covered her thighs and her eyes so bright.

“You were saying?”

Romeo coughed before she could speak.

“I’ll leave you two to get more acquainted with each other, have a good time bella signora”

That nickname didn’t sit well with him, he didn’t want Romeo getting attached to the help...Yes, that was definitely the reason.

“Please, sit. I’m not that cruel to make you stand there the entire time.”

She eyes him cautiously, taking two steps forward first, maybe to see if he would take out a gun and shoot her in the face.

Alexander had to admit, it was definitely a temptation he’d had since he’d discovered Nicholas had a sister but once he saw just how pretty that face was and how full those lips and chest was, he decided to hold back.

Shooting her in the head won’t do any good, and it definitely won’t give Nicholas the inspiration he needs to get him back all of his money.

After a few seconds of hesitation, he noticed the small shrug of her shoulders as she took determined steps to the seat directly opposite him, behind his desk.

“There you are,” Alexander said, putting down the files in his hands and focusing solely on her. For some reason he knew he wouldn’t be able to focus when she was there.

He should’ve definitely shot her in the face.

“What exactly do you want from me?”

He chuckled. Quite frankly he couldn’t wait for her to start begging for her life, she’s probably going to be a pathetic sniveling mess soon, weak, just like they always are.

“Don’t flatter yourself pretty face, you’re completely useless to me, it’s your brother I want something from. You’re only a means to get it, nothing more.”

She smiled…she fucking smiled.

“That’s a relief,” she shook her head “And here I thought you were going to use my as a sex toy or something.”

Alexander fought the urge to laugh out loud, she had no idea just how accurate she was.

“I guess I haven’t introduced myself properly, I’m Rain Coleman, it is a pleasure to meet you Mr. Alexander.”

Alexander smirked, now he was genuinely amused by her, she wasn’t what he expected.

“So you’re not afraid of what comes after this?”

“Oh,” her smile grew even wider “I am very much afraid as this is all way out of my comfort zone but, that doesn’t mean I’ll start crying over spilled milk now would I?”

He laughed once she was done speaking.

“I like you, Rain Coleman.”

He gave her his hand “Alexander Guerriero, nice to meet you.”

She looked down at his outstretched hand with an odd look in her eyes, then she took it and shook it lightly.

Her palm was surprisingly rough, not as soft and silky as he expected.

His lips curled up.
