Chapter 1

After Mom left, no one took care of me.

I lived like a stray dog in that village, begging for leftovers that had already gone sour. I survived on whatever wild fruit I could find in the hills, year after year, until I nearly died trying to escape.

Fifteen years later, I went to a private hospital for a follow-up appointment.

That was where I saw my mother, Vanessa Sterling, again.

We spotted each other from opposite ends of the hallway.

My heart lurched. I dropped my gaze and turned, desperate to get away before she could reach me.

She rushed after me anyway and seized my frostbitten hand.

"What?" she snapped. "You can't even look me in the eye? Too ashamed to face me?"

My chest tightened. My fingers curled instinctively.

Her hand was so warm.

The last time she had held me like this, I had been trembling from head to toe after throwing myself in front of her while Dad beat me.

Slowly, I pulled my hand free.

"You've got the wrong person."

Mom let out a cold laugh and stepped closer.

"Evan. I'd know you anywhere."

Her eyes swept over my faded clothes. Something complicated flickered across her face before it disappeared.

"Fifteen years, and now you just happen to show up here?"

She narrowed her eyes.

"Tell me. You tracked me down, didn't you? What do you want from me?"

I shoved my hands into my pockets and dug my nails into my palms.

"I'm here for treatment. I didn't know you were here."

She clearly didn't believe me.

"A consultation at this hospital costs over a thousand dollars. You grew up in the middle of nowhere. Since when can you afford a place like this?"

She stared at me as if she were waiting for me to crumble in front of her.

Or beg her for money like a starving dog.

I sighed to myself.

I was only here because the hospital was running a free clinical trial for advanced stomach cancer.

But I had no intention of explaining that to her.

I turned to leave.

A man in a suit approached from the side and handed her a folder.

"Ms. Sterling, I need you to approve the minutes from this afternoon's meeting."

Mom glanced at the page and frowned.

"You need me to catch mistakes this basic?"

The man immediately bowed his head and backed away.

Distracted, Mom shot me one last icy look.

"Stay right there. Don't go anywhere."

Then she turned to her assistant and began running through the rest of her schedule.

From what I overheard, she had been working herself sick. She had reserved a private suite here to recuperate. There was also something about a proposed marriage alliance with the Whitmore family.

I quietly retreated into the shadow beside the wall and watched her tear into an employee with effortless authority.

Her makeup was immaculate. Her hair was pinned neatly into place. Everything about her radiated the confidence of a woman who had spent years at the top.

I lowered my head and smiled, cracking my dry lips.

I'd made the right choice all those years ago.

Without me—the living stain of her worst nightmare—she had finally become the brilliant woman she was always supposed to be.

I looked away and ignored her order to stay put.

Keeping close to the wall, I made my way toward the doctor's office at the far end of the corridor.

I raised my hand and knocked.

The door opened from inside.

A slender woman in a white coat stood there.

My breath stopped.

Of all people...

It was Evelyn Whitmore.

The woman I had abandoned without a word two years ago.

The man was Mom's older brother, Richard Sterling—head of the Sterling family since grandfather had passed. My uncle. He walked to the bed and studied me in silence.I became so nervous I tried to sit straighter. He placed a hand on my shoulder and gently pushed me back against the pillows. Then he patted my shoulder once. His voice was deep and steady."Come home, Evan. Everyone's waiting for you."I froze. Those words meant more than an invitation. They meant the Sterling family had formally accepted me.I was no longer the unwanted boy drifting around.I belonged somewhere. My eyes burned as I nodded hard."Thank you, Uncle Richard."Dr. Collins and Evelyn pushed the trial further than anyone had expected, and my cancer gradually stabilized. It wasn't cured. But I had been given time. The day I was discharged, the sky was bright and clear. The Sterlings sent a car for me. Mom moved the towel out of reach."Don't move. Let me."She wiped my face carefully, inch by inch. When she was done, she dropped the towel into the basin and pulled a chair closer. We sat in silence for a long time. Then she spoke. Her voice was rough."Evan."I turned toward her.Suddenly, she bent forward and gripped my hand with both of hers. She started sobbing so hard she could barely breathe."I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."Her shoulders shook."I was wrong."For fifteen years, I had nightmares about you being beaten. Every night I saw that cellar, that house, those mountains... and you standing between me and him."She squeezed my hand."You were my own flesh and blood in that hell. You were the only light that kept me alive through those years."My heart twisted painfully at the sight of her breaking apart.I gathered what strength I had and squeezed back."Mom, I never blamed you."My voice shook."I only wanted you to have a good life. That was enough for me.

Once the drug entered my system, it felt as though someone were twisting a knife inside my stomach. Some nights, the pain made my whole body shake. Cold sweat soaked through my hospital gown.It hurt worse than any beating I had taken in the mountains.Whenever that happened, Evelyn sat beside me.She would rub her palms together until they were warm, then lay them gently over my stomach. The heat from her hands seeped into me little by little."If it gets too bad, bite me."She held her other hand near my mouth.I clenched my teeth and shook my head.I couldn't do that to her.One morning, Adrian came into the room behind Mom like an overly eager shadow. He was carrying a container of soup and staring at me with bright eyes."Hey, Evan. How are you feeling today?"It was the first time he had said my name without contempt in it.I froze.Warmth spread through my chest."Better."Mom sat nearby and watched us quietly, a faint smile on her face.Adrian leaned close and

My hospital room suddenly acquired two elite nutritionists and three private nurses rotating around the clock.Every meal was weighed to the gram. Every calorie and nutrient was calculated. If I so much as shifted under the blanket, someone immediately stepped forward to ask what I needed.I hated it.Back in the mountains, even clean water had been something I hauled from a well myself.I looked at the row of caregivers standing beside my bed and sighed."Please go outside. I want to be alone for a while."They exchanged nervous looks. No one moved.Mom sat on the sofa flipping rapidly through a stack of business documents without looking up."They're professionals. They know how to take care of you."I frowned as a dull ache stirred in my stomach."I don't need all this."Her hand stopped. She put the papers down and looked at me with stubborn determination."Yes, you do. Your body can't afford another mistake."We stared at each other.I knew arguing with her head-o

Darkness swallowed me.The sounds around me were muffled and chaotic, as though I were underwater. But through all of it, I heard one voice trembling with panic."Evan... Evan!"Mom.There was fear in her voice. Real fear. Enough to make it crack.I tried to open my eyes, but my eyelids felt impossibly heavy. So she could panic over me after all.Footsteps rushed closer. Then I heard Evelyn."Move! Bring the crash cart!"Her usually steady voice was tight with urgency."Ms. Sterling, all of you need to step back. Do not interfere."Mom seemed about to say something, but Evelyn cut her off."He has advanced gastric cancer and he's hemorrhaging. If you delay us even another second, he could die."Everything went silent.I felt myself being lifted onto a gurney. The wheels rattled violently as they raced down the hall. Before my consciousness disappeared completely, I felt strangely calm.If I died now, maybe that wouldn't be so terrible. At least, in the last moment of
