Chapter 4

Author: Mindless
At six the next evening, I arrived at the Grand Century Hotel's main ballroom.

I was early. I sat alone on a sofa in the corner, my crutches beside me, and watched the room fill.

I paid no attention to the occasional sideways glances and hushed whispers.

Business partners and company executives filed in one after another.

A stir rippled through the entrance, and I looked up instinctively.

Marcus strode in wearing a sharp suit, looking like a man on top of the world.

Jessica was on his arm in a flowing white evening gown, gliding in beside him.

The picture of a perfect couple. They turned heads across the room.

"Welcome, everyone, to this evening's gala! It is our great honor to witness the signing ceremony between Sterling Group and MJ Corp."

MJ Corp. That was the company Marcus had founded.

When he'd named it, he claimed that blending his initial with Jessica's would make the company lucky.

He'd overruled my objections and finalized it.

"It's an incredible honor to be partnering with Sterling Group. When my girlfriend and I first started this company, it was just for fun. We never imagined it would grow into what it is today, much less land a project of this magnitude."

Marcus held Jessica's hand, gazing at her with open adoration.

What he said was true enough. I'd helped him build the company from day one, mostly because I wanted to humor his ambition.

In the early days, the funding gap was enormous. I'd drained my personal savings to keep the company afloat and help him survive the hardest stretch.

In the end, all the credit went to Jessica. My contribution was erased entirely.

"Will both signing representatives please take the stage for the official signing."

Marcus and Gerald stood at the table onstage, pens poised.

"Wait."

Both men froze. Marcus looked startled. He knew that voice.

I stood below the stage and stared up at them, enunciating every word.

"I've reviewed MJ Corp's qualifications. They clearly don't meet the standards for this project. I suspect someone has been pulling strings."

"Renee, what are you doing here?" Marcus blurted out, visibly rattled.

"Young lady, that's a serious accusation." Gerald, on the other hand, kept his composure.

"Talk is cheap. If you're saying the qualifications don't hold up, show us the proof."

"Of course. If everyone would please direct your attention to the screen."

I'd anticipated this. The evidence I'd collected was exactly what I'd given Derek the night before.

Every eye in the room turned to the display.

The screen flickered and switched to the next slide.

One second. Two seconds. Nothing else appeared.

"What's going on? Where's the evidence?"

Someone in the crowd voiced the question already screaming through my head.

With nothing but "Signing Ceremony" still on the screen, the crowd began whispering among themselves.

"Is this some kind of impromptu stunt?"

"She's probably just trying to get attention. There's no shortage of media here tonight."

That comment landed, and half the room seemed to arrive at the same conclusion. The looks they shot me were pure contempt.

"Is this your evidence?" Gerald smirked at me.

I realized something had gone wrong on Derek's end.

Jessica slipped up beside me and lowered her voice to a whisper.

"We spotted you at the venue last night. He works for my uncle. Did you really think your college buddy would risk his career to help you?"

Despair surged through me, not because the evidence had failed to appear, but because someone I trusted had betrayed me. Again.

Again. Another betrayal. A laugh scraped out of my throat.

I forced a smile and fixed my bloodshot eyes on Jessica. "You really do think of everything, don't you, bestie?"

"And what makes you so sure I don't have a backup plan?" Still smiling, I leaned close enough to whisper in her ear.

Uncertainty flickered in her eyes.

"I just checked the guest list. I don't believe the young lady's name appears on it," Gerald called out from the stage.

"You're right, it doesn't. But family members were invited too, weren't they?"

My smile widened.

"So I came as family."

Gerald shot Marcus a look. Marcus wavered for only a moment before stepping forward.

"Renee, you and I may know each other, but you are not my family. You have no right to be at this gala."

"Security, get her out of here."

Two uniformed guards reached for me.

"I dare you to touch her."

A voice, sharp and commanding, cut through the room.

Every head turned toward the entrance, where a tall figure stood framed in the doorway.

Nathan Sterling, CEO of Sterling Group.

Today was our second wedding anniversary. We decided to celebrate at an amusement park.On the way in, Ethan chased our daughter, Lily, down the path like a big kid.An unexpected figure stepped into my path."Ren, I've come to take you back."He was wearing a battered old suit over a blue-and-white striped shirt. It was Marcus. All the warmth drained from me. "We have nothing to talk about.""Ren, I've had years to think things over. I finally understand. I should never have ignored your feelings. Work consumed me, and I lost sight of what mattered."His eyes gleamed with unsettling excitement. "Now I see it. You've always been the one I cared about the most. You must be so relieved, right, Ren? We can finally be together again.""You're out of your mind. I've been married for two years."I stepped back, repulsed. "My husband is right over there. Leave now, or I'm calling the police.""Ren, you don't have to test me anymore. This time, I'll choose you. No question about it."He reache

"Thank you for stepping in. I'm Renee Sterling. What's your name?""Ethan Grayson."He smiled, and sunlight spilled across a face that suddenly looked bright and easy."I'm glad you're okay. I've always wanted to play the hero. Guess I finally got my shot."Once the adrenaline wore off, curiosity got the better of him."What was that about? Who comes at someone with a knife in broad daylight?"I gave him a brief rundown. By the end, he was pacing back and forth, visibly agitated."If I'd known, I would've given her a couple of kicks while she was down. Unbelievable."We talked for a few more minutes, then went our separate ways without exchanging numbers. We were strangers. That was supposed to be the end of it.What I didn't expect was that a week later, we'd run into each other again. This time, he was visiting my company as a client. The moment we locked eyes, we both froze.Neither of us brought up our first meeting. I showed him around the office, and then we sat down to talk busi

I leaned back in my airplane seat with my eyes closed. For the first time in as long as I could remember, I felt genuinely light.A few notifications popped up on my phone.[SHOCKING: The Hidden Connection Between MJ Corp and Sterling Group!][Major Shakeup at Sterling Group's Regional Branch...][MJ Corp CEO Facing Criminal Charges?][Sterling Heiress Returns...]I tapped on one at random. The comments were tearing Marcus and Jessica to shreds.Apparently, a doctor had revealed how I'd broken my leg saving Marcus's life.A reply appeared almost instantly.[I think I actually have a photo of this girl. Saw her a while back near the supermarket, out in a snowstorm on crutches buying groceries. (image)][That's her. Are you serious? What kind of person does this?][What a scumbag! What appeared on the screen this time wasn't a promotional slideshow. It was a series of side-by-side comparison charts. On one side, the project's minimum qualification standards. On the other, MJ Corp's actual internal records.Registered capital, performance benchmarks, equipment, facilities. MJ Corp failed to meet a single requirement. This was the evidence I'd gathered.I trusted Derek, but I also knew better than to put all my eggs in one basket. The files I'd given Derek were only a backup copy. The originals had been handed to the main AV control team much earlier, as a precaution in case something went wrong on Derek's end.Now that precaution was paying off.Sweat trickled down Gerald's forehead. His eyes darted around the room. "My apologies, Mr. Sterling. I've been overwhelmed with work lately, but this is still my responsibility."Then he whipped around and roared at Marcus."Your company doesn't meet a single qualification threshold, and you had the nerve to come waltzing

"Mr. Sterling, welcome." Gerald hurried over with a deferential smile. "The ceremony is already underway, and we're about to sign. Let me show you to your seat."Nathan didn't acknowledge him. He walked straight ahead.Marcus saw Nathan heading his way and straightened his jacket, his face lighting with excitement."Mr. Sterling, I'm Marcus Daw—"Before he could finish, one of Nathan's bodyguards stepped between them.Nathan walked right past him and stopped in front of me. The security guards on either side of me slipped away without a word."Are you okay, Ren?" Nathan squeezed my shoulder. His voice was gentle, nothing like the commanding tone from seconds earlier."Sorry I'm late.""You're not late. Your timing is perfect." I managed a small smile.Marcus, Jessica, and Gerald stood frozen, staring at the scene in disbelief.Hushed conversations rippled through the crowd."Who is she? Nathan Sterling is fussing over her like family.""They look awfully close. What's their relationshi
