Chapter 1

The maid's cries brought half the people in the neighborhood out of their houses.

I'd fallen into the ornamental pond by the front gate. The water was only knee-deep, so any normal person could've easily climbed out by themselves.

However, I was born with a weak heart and lung problems. Even a chilly breeze could land me in the hospital, let alone being completely submerged in water. The moment I hit the water, I started coughing violently. Then, I choked on the water, which only made me cough harder, trapping me in a vicious cycle.

Jasper Harmon, my older biological brother, came rushing out, but his first instinct wasn't to pull me out. Instead, he turned around and covered Melanie Harmon's ears.

"Don't be scared. I'm here. She's just trying to scare you on purpose."

My mother hugged Melanie, too. "Melanie has depression. She can't be exposed to such scenes. Take her back to her room at once."

Only then did my father tell the maids to fish me out.

I huddled beneath a blanket, but even louder than my coughing was the alarm from the health monitoring wristband on my wrist. It was wailing like a siren.

When Dr. Grant Thompson, the Harmons' family physician, arrived, he quickly checked my vitals and paled.

"Ms. Wendy has a congenital heart disease and a severe blood-clotting disorder. Didn't you read her medical records from the orphanage?"

Mom, Dad, and Jasper didn't say a word. My medical records were over 60 pages long. They'd only bothered to look at the paternity test results.

The arrival of the ambulance broke the awkward silence. The paramedics were just about to load me into the vehicle when they looked up and found Melanie already lying on the stretcher inside.

They froze. "Isn't this the patient who needs emergency treatment?"

Without a second thought, Jasper replied, "Melanie has depression. She was triggered by what just happened, too. She needs treatment as well."

One of the paramedics wanted to argue, but when she saw that I was coughing so hard I was practically bringing up blood, she could only ease me onto a chair instead.

"What is wrong with this family…" she muttered.

Hearing her remark, I felt uneasy and tried to offer an explanation. "It's fine. I don't deserve to be in an ambulance of my own. I'm already glad I was allowed to hitch a ride."

Jasper froze when he heard that. But just then, the ambulance siren started blaring, and Melanie immediately covered her ears while trembling. Instantly, he instructed the driver, "Turn off the siren! Melanie can't tolerate high-frequency noises!"

The doctor riding in the ambulance didn't even turn around. "The patient who actually needs emergency treatment could go into cardiac arrest at any moment. Anyone who needs silence can get off."

Jasper's face turned livid with anger, but he didn't dare say another word. Mom finally turned to look at me. But the moment Melanie called for her, she quickly turned away again.

It hit me then that the Harmons knew full well which one of us had a more serious condition. They were simply accustomed to prioritizing her needs above all else.

True enough, I was unworthy.

After Dad paid the hospital fees, he went off to take a phone call. Mom accompanied Melanie to her counseling session, while Jasper waited outside for them the entire time.

I was the one lying in the emergency room, yet the only person who stuck around to sign my paperwork was the family butler, Eric Gardner.

Eventually, Melanie showed up. She stood by the doorframe, her eyes red-rimmed. "It's all my fault. If I hadn't misspoken, Wendy wouldn't have fallen into the water."

Jasper immediately snapped, "Hear that? Melanie is taking the blame for you."

"I didn't go toward the pond on purpose," I corrected them. "I just thought I wasn't worthy of exiting through the main entrance, so I tried looking for a side door, but I accidentally slipped."

The doctor checked my medical records once more before looking at me, the corners of his mouth twitching.

Dad suppressed his anger and said, "Don't ever say such things again. Since you've reunited with the family, you're a Harmon now."

…

In the evening, the family arranged for me to move into the largest room on the third floor. Melanie stood in the doorway and started to wheeze as she said, "It's fine. This was originally my art studio, but if Wendy wants it, she can have it."

Mom's heart ached for her at once. "Wendy just got back, so she didn't know it was your art studio.

"Wendy, why don't you use another room instead?"

"Okay." I immediately handed back the key.

Half an hour later, Jasper kicked open the door to the new bedroom I was given. When he saw the empty closet, he scoffed.

"Why's the brat trying to act like she's been wronged, huh? Is she pretending to run away from home just because she had to use a different room? Does she expect all of us to go out looking for her?"

Eric, who followed him in, informed him, "Ms. Wendy hasn't gone anywhere, Mr. Jasper. She simply thought the guest bedroom was too good for her, so she decided to move into the spare bedroom in the staff quarters instead."

Jasper was taken aback.

A year later, my health seemed to have stabilized for good. The charity fund also helped its 100th child. At the celebration, a seven-year-old girl stared at the cake on the table but refused to take a piece no matter what.I asked her, "Do you not like cake?"She shook her head. "I do. But the last piece should go to a better-behaved child."Those words sounded all too familiar.I served her the cake myself and said, "If you like it, go ahead and take it.""But do I deserve to have it?"I crouched down and looked at her. "You do. Cake isn't some kind of prize. You don't need to earn it by being well-behaved."She took a cautious bite, and her eyes immediately lit up. I suddenly found myself smiling, too.As it turned out, I didn't need to go back to the past to heal my wounded inner child. Giving the advice the younger me should've received to another child in the same situation worked just as well.Mom and Dad messaged me once every week. They didn't pressure me to come hom

The new party was held after three days. The media, company shareholders, and all the friends and relatives of both the Harmon and Steele families were all in attendance.Someone whispered, "She's only just returned to the family, and she's already forced out the adopted daughter. She's pretty ruthless.""The family elders even gave her shares in the company. I bet she'd been plotting this from the start.""Being sick was only an act. She's just a manipulative schemer."I heard them, but I didn't retreat to the staff area. I walked to the main table, pulled out the chair labeled Wendy Harmon, and sat down.Jasper stepped onto the stage and picked up the microphone. "Half of what that article online said was true."The audience erupted in an uproar.Mom's face was pale, but she followed him onto the stage. "Melanie, the daughter we raised, was indeed taken away by the police."Dad took over. "But Wendy, our biological daughter, didn't force her out. We were the ones who called t

The day I was discharged from the hospital, the Harmons arrived in three cars. Mom and Dad came in one, Jasper came in another, and my grandparents came in the third.I headed toward the last one without even thinking about it.Jasper stood beside the car door, his hand still raised as though he'd been about to open it for me."It's fine. I deserve that," he said with a rueful smile. No one responded. When we returned to the Harmon residence, the ornamental pond by the entrance had already been filled in.Mom had personally prepared a room for me. This time, it wasn't Melanie's old art studio or one of the guest bedrooms. It was a newly renovated bedroom that belonged solely to me.There were no extravagant evening gowns in the closet, just clothes Eric had prepared in my size. The necklace with the massive sapphire was on the table.Mom stood in the doorway, not wanting to put me off by coming in."Your Grandma Polly wants you to have it. If you don't like it, you don't have

Susan was soon brought in for questioning. The first thing she did when she entered the room wasn't to admit her guilt. Instead, she shouted at Melanie, "Everything I did was for your sake!"Melanie recoiled as if she'd been burned. "Don't talk to me!"Susan continued shouting frantically, "You were such a healthy and beautiful baby! Why should you have had to suffer with me? She was born sick. She wouldn't have survived anyway. Sending her to an orphanage was already more than good enough for her!"Grandma Naomi grabbed a water glass, ready to throw it at her, but Grandpa George stopped her. "Don't dirty your hands for the likes of her."I stared at Susan. So, I hadn't been born believing I was unworthy. Someone had taught me that on the very first day of my life.At the orphanage, I would give away the last piece of cake even though I wanted it. When I came first in class, I would say the test had been easy. When someone complimented me, I always expected them to mock me in the

When I woke up, only my grandparents were around in the hospital room.Grandpa Edgar was peeling an apple, though he was doing a terrible job of it. He'd gouged out a lot of the flesh in the process.Grandpa George looked at it disdainfully. "Did a dog chew up that apple?"Grandpa Edgar put down the knife. "If you think you can do better, go ahead and prove it."They were about to start bickering when they noticed I was awake and clammed up at once.I instinctively shrank beneath the blanket. "Is this room really expensive?"Grandma Naomi stuffed the hospital invoice into a drawer. "Why would it be expensive? Your Grandpa Edgar owns this hospital."Grandpa Edgar immediately corrected her, "I only own a part of it.""That still makes it practically hers," she retorted. That comment made me stiffen. Mine? That notion sounded more foreign to me than anything I'd ever heard.Suddenly, I heard an argument outside the door. Mom wanted to come in, but Grandma Polly refused to let h

Grandma Naomi was the first to rush over and catch me in her arms. "Quick! Call an ambulance!"When Grandpa George saw the things I'd left on the table, his expression hardened.Grandma Polly knelt beside me, her hands shaking so badly she could barely hold her phone. "Wendy, can you hear me?"Mom finally snapped out of her daze and tried to reach for me, but Grandpa Edgar stood in her way."Don't touch her."Mom froze. "Dad, I'm her mother."Looking her in the eye, Grandpa Edgar said in a quiet but alarmingly cold voice, "Aren't you the one who said you'd prefer it if you guys never brought her back?"A silence fell over the living room.Jasper was pale as he explained, "It was just some heated words said in a moment of anger, Grandpa Edgar.""Just some heated words, you say?"Grandma Naomi whipped her head up. "Wendy has a weak heart, yet you people went on and on about how undeserving she is, each one more cruel than the last! What's the matter? You didn't want to waste th
